Optional Nikon ZR R3D NE decoding through RED's SDK in a helper process (proposal for #383) - #3016
This is a proposal for the owner decision asked for in #383, not a routine contribution. It adds
an opt-in red-sdk feature that decodes Nikon ZR R3D NE clips (#1111, #1415) through RED's R3D SDK,
which the user downloads and supplies; it is off by default and changes nothing in default builds.
The rules it needs are proposed in the same change, marked as proposed: a new ADR 0002 and the matching paragraph in AGENTS.md.
If the owners decide camera RAW stays public-spec only, close this; nothing else depends on the
backend. It is the sibling of #1954 (BRAW through Blackmagic's runtime loaded in-process) and takes
a different shape, explained below so the two can be compared.
The first two commits are the playback plan for throughput-bound sources
(MediaSource::frame_delivery, throughput_plan), which the backend needs and which is also proposed
separately in #3059; if that PR merges first, they drop out of this one on rebase. Works best with #3056, #3057 and #3058, which move imports, the Media Browser and the audio meters off the UI thread: without them a card of R3D
clips still blocks the window while clips are probed, as any slow-to-open format does.
What it does
Four commits after those two:
Half-float frames, Log3G10 / REDWideGamutRGB, a still-frame hint.PixelData::RgbaF16
(premultiplied linear RGBA as IEEE halves, the GPU's Rgba16Float layout, uploaded as is; CPU
paths widen it exactly), RED's published Log3G10 curve and REDWideGamutRGB primaries, and cancel::with_still (a frame wanted with playback stopped, where latency matters). Generic and
tested without any SDK.
Camera RAW development settings. Clip ▸ Source Settings… becomes a Camera Raw panel for camera
RAW clips (three columns: decode quality and Decode Using; IPP2 colour space and gamma curve, tone
map, roll-off, HDR peak, chroma noise reduction, flashing pixel, metadata curves, creative LUT,
CDL; ISO, colour temperature, tint, exposure, each as shot until set), with Update RMD, Use
Changes and Use Settings; File ▸ Project Settings ▸ Camera RAW… holds the project's defaults
(schema v16, no-op migration). The dialog previews live and is one undo step
(clip.sourceSettings {preview, commit, revert}, Session::revert_merged / end_merged); this
folds in what was planned as a separate Source Settings live-preview PR, since upstream's Source
Settings has no controls to preview without it. The compositor's interpretation follows the
development (Project::color_space_override) and is not stored. The media pool hands a changed
setting to the open source instead of opening a second decoder. .r3d files are recognised in
every build and report that they need the feature. All of it is tested with stand-in sources.
The model is written for any camera RAW source; I would like it to be the one #1065: CinemaDNG in MXF and camera raw Source Settings #1078's DNG raw
settings use too, rather than two dialogs.
ADR 0002 and the AGENTS.md paragraph, both proposed (below).
The backend (crates/platform/src/red/, build.rs, the red-sdk features of filmcraft
and filmcraft-cli): with RED_R3D_SDK_DIR naming a local RED R3D SDK 9.2.1, build.rs compiles src/red/helper.cpp, an original C++ program, against it (Windows x64 MSVC, Linux x64 GNU) and
copies RED's runtime libraries beside it. The SDK runs only in that helper. Two helper processes
serve every clip: one decodes on the GPU (CUDA, else OpenCL) into five shared frame slots; one
serves audio, thumbnails, metadata probes and still frames of a quarter size or less on the CPU
(an eighth in ~35 ms, where the GPU pipeline takes ~160–200 ms for any single frame). They talk
the FCRD9 protocol: newline requests (O open, C close, V video with the development settings
as range-checked fields, W write the RMD sidecar, A audio, F free a slot), framed replies
with request ids, out of order, every byte treated as hostile input, 120-second deadlines and a
watchdog. A helper that crashes or hangs becomes a media error and a restarted helper (the frames
in flight are asked again once); idle helpers close; a GPU that cannot start a helper backs off
while the CPU helper serves. docs/r3d-ne.md is the user and developer document: setup,
behaviour, limits, the protocol contract, tests, measurements and licensing.
unsafe: one new module, under ADR 0001
Frames come back through shared memory the helper creates and the app maps read-only (a named
section on Windows, a POSIX shared memory object on Linux): crates/platform/src/red/shm.rs is the
one new #[allow(unsafe_code)] module, with ADR 0001's containment (a // SAFETY: comment on every
block, a safe API with bounds-checked slices, no callbacks into Rust, on Linux the object's size
checked before mapping). It is described in an ADR 0001 addendum, marked as proposed with ADR 0002.
The bytes come from another process and are validated, never trusted; no Rust invariant rests on
the helper keeping to the protocol. Everything else in the backend is safe Rust. (An earlier draft
of this text said no unsafe was added; that was before the shared-memory transport.)
What it is not
Not a clean-room REDCODE decoder: there is no public specification; the SDK is the only route.
Not linked into the app: no RED code is in the filmcraft binary, and the app never loads RED's
libraries. One C++ source file is in the repository, compiled only with the feature.
Not bundled: no SDK header, library, documentation, sample code or footage is in the repository
or in any build without the feature. The feature build stops without RED_R3D_SDK_DIR; CI and
official builds never enable it.
Why a helper process rather than an in-process runtime like #1954
Blackmagic ships a runtime with a COM-style C ABI that can be loaded at run time. RED's SDK is a
C++ API around a static library that must be linked at build time, plus runtime libraries. Linking
it into the editor would mean C++ FFI and the SDK's threads, memory and crashes in the app's
process; in a helper they cost a process hop, made cheap by the shared frames. Both shapes keep the
default build untouched, and they can coexist. If the owners prefer one pattern for every vendor
SDK, this follows that decision.
Measured
Two hardware classes, 6K Nikon ZR clips (6048×3402, 23.976 and 59.94 fps) and 4K (3984×2240,
119.88 fps), release builds: A a 16-core desktop CPU with a 16 GB current-generation NVIDIA GPU
(Windows 11); B a 16-core desktop CPU with a 10 GB previous-generation NVIDIA GPU shared with
another workload (Ubuntu 24.04, software window).
Result
The SDK, 6K at half resolution, 4–5 frames in flight
~25 fps on both (R3D NE decompresses on the CPU; RED's SDK has no GPU decompression for it)
Playback at half resolution, 6K 23.976p
every frame (A: 713 shown, 2 dropped in 30 s)
Playback at half resolution, 6K 59.94p
two of five frames, an even 22.5–24 fps, no cancelled jobs (without the playback plan the picture froze)
Playback at half resolution, 4K 119.88p
every frame the display shows
Quarter resolution, 6K 59.94p
every frame
A paused monitor (an eighth), one frame
28–36 ms on the CPU helper vs 160–200 ms on the GPU helper
A 109-clip card
imports in about 2 s; a scrub shows its frame in 44–48 ms (median, A); a Source Settings change reaches the monitor in 62–67 ms (A); at most two helper processes
Export, 6K timeline to 1080p
~14–15 fps, decode-bound (export asks for one frame at a time)
This is usable for editing native 6K at reduced resolution, assemblies and grading; realtime 6K at
half resolution is not reached (proxies remain the workflow for that). The numbers, how they were
taken and the SDK's rounding of reduced decodes (measured, since the headers do not state it) are in docs/r3d-ne.md.
Licensing
A contributor's reading of RED's SDK agreement, not legal advice; docs/r3d-ne.md § Licensing has
the details. The licence is personal and non-transferable: everyone who builds the feature downloads
the SDK and accepts it themselves. The adapter source is original code that calls the SDK's
public API; the agreement forbids distributing the SDK's own parts and does not plainly forbid this,
but its clauses on "Header File Information" and confidentiality make publishing it a judgement for
the owners: the adapter necessarily names the API it calls (as RED's public sample code does), and
copies or paraphrases no header or documentation text, enumerator values, structure layouts or
sample code. Shipping an SDK-enabled build is allowed only under RED's conditions (an end-user
licence for the helper and RED's libraries, a private install directory, RED's notices intact, no use
of RED's marks), which an MIT OR Apache-2.0 release does not meet on its own. This PR proposes no
such build: official builds and releases are unchanged, and users build the feature locally.
Tests and gates
On upstream mainc3b4c4d. Without the feature (what CI and every default build see):
Windows 11 and Ubuntu 24.04: cargo fmt --check, cargo xtask layers, assets and wasm pass.
cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings reports only what main itself reports, in
files this PR does not touch: on stable, an unused import in crates/engine/src/relink_tests.rs
(Windows only); on the 1.95 MSRV, nonminimal_bool / collapsible_match in crates/ui-egui/src/panels/file_dialogs.rs, timeline.rs and crates/prores/src/decode.rs. With
those allowed it is clean on 1.95 (Ubuntu). Every commit builds on its own.
The tests of the crates this PR touches (frame, color, media, format, project, render, codecs,
engine on Windows; those plus gpu, platform, ui-egui, filmcraft-cli and filmcraft on Ubuntu): all pass apart from the machines' ffmpeg-oracle tests (EXR, TIFF,
the export presets' APV check), which fail the same on main, a Windows path-separator test in interchange.rs, and a few timing-sensitive tests (an MXF fixture test; perf, panels, masks and
eyedropper UI tests; an H.264 draft counter) that fail in the combined --test it binaries under
load, a different set on each run, and pass when run alone on both machines. A full cargo test --workspace on Ubuntu at the previous base passed 3,632 tests with only the ffmpeg-oracle failures.
With --features red-sdk against RED R3D SDK 9.2.1:
Windows 11: clippy (stable, and 1.95 for filmcraft-platform) clean apart from the main findings
above; the backend's unit tests: 19 passed.
Ubuntu 24.04: clippy 1.95 for filmcraft-platform, filmcraft and filmcraft-cli clean apart
from those; unit tests 19 passed; the CLI builds and filmcraft-cli probe reads a 6K clip through
the helper; the real-clip tests on that clip: 24 of 29 pass. The other 5 need the GPU helper and the
test machine has no NVIDIA GPU (they stop at "the GPU helper runs"); all of them passed on both
hardware classes on the source branch, whose backend code is identical apart from comments and
test fixture strings. No helper process or shared memory object was left after the runs.
Added optional Nikon ZR R3D NE import and playback in configured Windows and Linux builds using a user-supplied RED SDK. Default builds recognize R3D files but cannot decode them.
Added Camera RAW clip and project settings, with live previews, reset and apply actions, and optional RMD sidecar updates.
Added RED Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB color support, plus half-float frame handling.
Improved playback scheduling for sources with limited decoding throughput.
Bug Fixes
Preserved container color information for half-float frames and corrected displayed color-space overrides.
Documentation
Added setup, compatibility, and usage guidance for optional R3D NE support and Camera RAW settings.
…owly
The playback planner assumes a source's decode cost is sequential (true for long-GOP codecs) and
asks for every frame. A source that decodes each frame on its own but slower than the sequence
rate, such as a 6K camera RAW decoder at 25 fps under a 59.94 fps sequence, then delivers every
frame after the playhead has passed it and the monitor shows nothing. MediaSource::frame_delivery
lets a source say its frames decode independently and, optionally, the rate it sustains; the
media pool's wrappers forward it and the default changes nothing. Such a source gets a plan of its
own (throughput_plan): evenly spaced frames anchored so the set does not shift with the playhead,
each started its latency plus slack ahead, and a running job within LATE_GRACE frames behind the
playhead finishes and shows late instead of being cancelled. A media-pool item that several frame
workers miss at once is opened once and shared. perf.stats.frames reports the plan and the
source's rate.

…picture
Every n-th frame left a 23.976p clip on a 22 fps pipeline at every second frame. throughput_plan
now keeps m of every n frames (1/1, 3/4, 2/3, 1/2, 2/5, 3/8, 1/3, 1/4, then 1/n), the densest
that the measured capacity covers: the lesser of the source's own rate and what the workers
sustain while each holds a job for the source's latency. The picture decides at the margin: a
half-second window in which two in five refreshes show a picture behind the frame due makes the
pattern sparser, and a denser one needs two windows on time and a cooldown that doubles after a
failed step up. A source that measures its own rate says whether the reading is recent
(FrameDelivery::fresh), and a stale one is refreshed by asking for a few more frames of the
pattern. The plan cache evicts frames already shown before prefetched ones, and the look-ahead
is bounded by what the cache holds. FILMCRAFT_FRAME_WORKERS and FILMCRAFT_PLAYBACK_PATTERN pin
the worker count and the pattern for measurements; perf.stats reports the pattern, the look-ahead
and the source's latencies.
Measured with a 6K intra-frame source at half resolution: 59.94p shows an even 22.5-24 fps with
no cancelled jobs, 23.976p three of four frames, and a 119.88p 4K source every frame.

…me hint
Building blocks for camera RAW sources, useful to any decoder and tested
without one:
- PixelData::RgbaF16: premultiplied linear RGBA as little-endian IEEE
halves, the GPU's Rgba16Float texel layout, so a decoder that produces
halves hands them over without widening to f32 and back. The GPU
compositor uploads them as they are; crops, rotations and the CPU
conversion (`to_linear_f32*`) treat them like the f32 frame of the same
values (a test checks every bit pattern and bit-exact agreement).
`half_to_f32` / `f32_to_half` are exact. The frame pool takes byte
buffers back (`recycle_u8`, `recycle_pixels`) and keeps up to 320 MB of
idle buffers, enough for 6K half-resolution frames in flight.
- RED Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB in filmcraft-color, from RED's
published white paper, with its mapping table as the test.
- cancel::with_still / still(): a hint that a frame is wanted with
playback stopped (a scrub, a paused monitor), when latency matters more
than throughput. The frame server sets it for FrameServer::request;
playback and prefetch requests clear it. Sources are free to ignore it.

Clip > Source Settings... becomes a Camera Raw panel for camera RAW clips,
and File > Project Settings > Camera RAW... holds the project's defaults.
Nothing here needs a RAW decoder: the model, the commands, the panel and
the colour interpretation are tested with stand-in sources, and every
other clip keeps the read-only Source Settings it had.
- filmcraft_media::raw: RawDevelop (decode quality, Decode Using, IPP2
colour space and gamma curve, tone map, roll-off, HDR peak, chroma noise
reduction, flashing pixel, metadata curves, creative LUT, CDL, and the
RAW adjustments ISO / Kelvin / tint / exposure, each "as shot" until
set), the as-shot values and what a clip records (RawAsShot,
RawClipInfo), and four MediaSource methods with "unsupported" defaults
that wrappers forward: set_develop, raw_as_shot, raw_clip_info,
write_raw_sidecar.
- Project: Interpretation::develop (a clip's own settings),
ProjectSettings::camera_raw (new projects: Rec. 709 with BT.1886, as
shot; older projects read as the scene-linear Rec. 709 their clips had),
Project::develop_of and color_space_override: the compositor's
interpretation follows the development and is not stored. Schema v16, a
no-op migration.
- clip.sourceSettings reports the panel's controls and sets them (one undo
step; hostile values refused), with Decode Using, Use Changes, Use
Settings and Update RMD (writes a sidecar only when asked). It previews
live: `preview` applies as a merged undo step, `commit` keeps it,
`revert` takes it back (Session::revert_merged / end_merged), which is
what the dialog does while a control is dragged and on OK / Cancel.
file.projectSettings.cameraRaw sets the project's settings.
- The media pool keys a camera RAW clip by the settings it decodes with
and hands a change to the open source instead of opening a second
decoder (media_key takes the project's Camera RAW settings).
- `.r3d` files are recognised in every build and report, without reading
the file into memory, that they need a build with the red-sdk feature.
- Translations of the panel for es / ja / zh-cn and the menu label
elsewhere; control-protocol.md documents both commands.

…torytold#383)
A proposal for the owner decision storytold#383 asks for, marked as proposed and
not in effect: formats without a public specification may be decoded
through their vendor's SDK only as an opt-in Cargo feature that is off
by default and never enabled by CI or official builds, built against an
SDK the user supplies (nothing downloaded, committed or bundled), with
the vendor's code in a separate helper process and at most one
shared-memory unsafe module under ADR 0001's rules. The default build,
its gates and its tests stay unchanged, and the project distributes no
SDK-enabled build.
AGENTS.md gets the matching paragraph (section 3.2) and a note under
section 0 item 3, both marked as proposed. The record compares this
shape with storytold#1954's runtime loaded in-process.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An optional backend for R3D NE (storytold#1111, storytold#1415), off by default, under the
proposed ADR 0002. With `--features red-sdk` and RED_R3D_SDK_DIR naming
the user's own copy of RED R3D SDK 9.2.1, crates/platform/build.rs
compiles an original C++ helper against it (Windows x64 with MSVC, Linux
x64 with the system compiler) and copies RED's runtime libraries beside
it. Without the feature nothing of it is compiled.
- The SDK runs only in the helper. Two helper processes serve every clip:
one decodes on the GPU (CUDA, else OpenCL) into five shared frame
slots, one serves audio, thumbnails, metadata probes and still frames
of a quarter size or less on the CPU. Clips are opened in them on
first use; idle helpers close; a helper that fails is started again
and the frames in flight are asked again once; a GPU helper that
cannot start backs off while the CPU helper serves.
- The FCRD9 protocol: newline requests on stdin (O, C, V, W, A, F), framed
replies with request ids, answered out of order, the development
settings as range-checked fields, every reply treated as hostile
input, 120-second deadlines and a watchdog. Frames are read in place
from shared memory: red::shm is the backend's one unsafe module (a
read-only view of a named section on Windows, a POSIX shared memory
object on Linux), described in an ADR 0001 addendum.
- The source reports linear half-float frames, IPP2 development from the
Camera Raw panel (16-bit display and log curves linearised with the
compositor's own curves), the clip's as-shot values and recorded
settings, RMD sidecars, native and resampled audio, and its throughput
through MediaSource::frame_delivery, so the playback plan asks for the
frames it can show.
- `red-sdk` features on filmcraft and filmcraft-cli; `probe` opens R3D
through the local-file reader (ByteReader::local_path) instead of
reading the file whole. filmcraft-platform builds at opt-level 3 in
the dev profile (the frame repack is on the playback path).
Tests without footage cover the protocol, the metadata, the rounding of
reduced decodes, the repack and linearisation, PCM, dispatch,
deadlines, the back-off and the shared memory. Real-clip tests are
#[ignore] unless RED_R3D_TEST_CLIP names a clip. docs/r3d-ne.md has
setup, behaviour, limits, the protocol contract, tests, measurements and
a summary of RED's SDK agreement: the adapter is original code naming
the SDK's public API; distributing SDK-enabled builds would need RED's
conditions and is not proposed.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 21396
Cancelling a Camera RAW preview after an undo permanently discards the redo history, so the undone edit can no longer be redone. The failure needs a specific sequence and affects only the editing session, not saved data. Saving and restoring the redo stack on cancel is a small fix, worth making before merge or tracking as a follow-up. Invalid saved Camera RAW settings are now repaired on project load.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 21396
The optional backend adds native media parsing and shared helper processes. Protocol validation and recovery controls limit several failure paths, but cancellation can leave native clip allocations without an owner and exhaust a helper’s shared clip budget. Exposure is limited to SDK-enabled builds; no code-execution vulnerability was verified.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Cancellation after an O request is submitted can leave its native clip allocation without an owner. The caller returns before recording the handle, while the helper can subsequently insert the clip and send a reply that is merely discarded. Repetition can consume the shared helper’s 4096-clip budget and refuse opens for other clips. Idle shutdown or helper replacement releases the allocations, but continued activity can prevent idle recovery. This is a cross-clip failure-containment issue, not a verified remote exploit.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Native decoder failures and resource exhaustion can affect multiple R3D clips because each helper serves shared clip state. The process launcher does not establish reduced privileges, so process separation alone does not demonstrate containment of a compromised SDK to only the selected media file.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Executable and runtime-library overrides explicitly select trusted code. Media paths are passed through the helper protocol rather than a shell. Shared objects use randomized names, exclusive creation, and owner-only permissions on Linux; the parent maps frame memory read-only.
observed — Playback retains revision-keyed job and cache identity. Cancellation checks precede publication, and still-frame and source-delivery hints affect scheduling or backend selection rather than granting new source authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Submitted requests retain deadlines even when callers cancel. A watchdog fails waiters and kills stalled helpers; helper destruction attempts orderly exit before forced termination and reaping. These controls contain stalled requests, but successful abandoned clip allocations do not remain pending for the watchdog to clean up.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make clip creation retain cleanup ownership through acknowledgement or abandonment, with compensating close after a cancelled open completes. A lifecycle check should establish that repeated cancelled opens return the helper’s live-clip count to baseline.
proposed — If the helper is intended as a security boundary rather than crash separation, define its permitted filesystem, network and credential authority and evaluate platform-specific restrictions, including explicit handling of authorized RMD writes.

The title names the primary change: optional Nikon ZR R3D NE decoding through the RED SDK, run in a separate helper process. The changeset matches this. It adds the red-sdk feature, the platform helper (helper.cpp, shm.rs, build.rs), the codec opener, the docs, and ADR 0002. The title also cites proposal #383, while the PR objectives cite PR #3016. The number conflict does not affect the title-to-change match, but the author should confirm which reference is correct. The title is long (91 characters), but it is specific and single-sentence.

half_to_f32 and f32_to_half duplicate f16_to_f32_fast and f32_to_f16 in crates/gpu/src/lib.rs (lines 113-180). The GPU copies are also still used by f32_to_f16_bytes and map_accumulator. Two copies of the same bit-level logic can diverge. filmcraft-gpu already depends on filmcraft-frame.
Keep these two functions as the single implementation. Make the GPU functions thin wrappers or re-exports of them.
Also, the doc comment says f32_to_half rounds to nearest even. The subnormal branch (Lines 751-758) only checks the round bit. It rounds exact ties up, not to even. Either narrow the doc comment to normal values or add a sticky/tie check.

- Project Camera RAW changes refresh the HDR metadata and colour space
interpretation of the clips that follow the project (Decode Using >
Project), as a clip's own settings already did (sync_derived).
- Views that draw during playback (scopes, Reference monitor, multicam
angles, the reference frame, thumbnails) request frames with
request_while, so playback-time frames are not still frames and do not
move to the RED CPU helper, which plays the audio.
- Plans never looked up keep their place in the plan cache only while
fresh, and lose it when playback stops, so a scrub after playback
evicts the stale prefetched plans before the frames it just showed.
- One half-float implementation: filmcraft-gpu's conversions wrap
filmcraft-frame's; subnormal ties now round to even, with a round-trip
test over every half.
- The Project Settings dialog compares Camera RAW command parameters, not
the panel's state.
- The RED helper's CPU thread default is four in its comment and docs.

On the half-float nitpick in the review summary: filmcraft-gpu's f32_to_f16, f16_to_f32 and f16_to_f32_fast now wrap filmcraft_frame::f32_to_half / half_to_f32, so there is one implementation, and its subnormal branch now rounds ties to even, with a test that every half round-trips and that subnormal and normal ties go to the even value (35b827c). Also moved crop_plane's doc comment back above crop_plane.
Thanks for this proposal. Optional RED SDK decoding (a proprietary SDK in a helper process, new build.rs and dependencies, about 10k lines) is an architecture and licensing decision for the maintainers, so we won't land it in a community batch. We'll follow up here.

Validate RAW settings when loading a project.
A schema-v16 project can provide invalid values for settings.camera_raw or interpret.develop. Deserialization accepts them, and validate_loaded does not validate either field. The RED source stores invalid settings and rejects them only when a frame is requested. Validate both fields at the load boundary.

A schema-v16 project could carry Camera RAW settings a RAW source refuses
(a gamma that does not go with the colour space, a hand edit); they were
accepted and failed only at the first frame. Opening now repairs them
like the other load-time checks: the project's fall back to the defaults
of a project from before the setting, and a clip's own give way to the
project's, each with a warning.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
On the outside-diff finding in the last review (crates/project/src/lib.rs:1178-1179, RAW settings not validated on load): filmcraft-format's validate_loaded now checks both with RawDevelop::validate and repairs rather than refuses, like its other load-time checks. Invalid project settings fall back to RawDevelop::default() (what a project from before the setting reads as), and a clip's invalid own settings are dropped so it follows the project's, each with a warning. Test invalid_camera_raw_settings_are_repaired_on_load (db70ec0).

A merged step's first edit clears the redo steps, as every edit does, so
undoing an edit and then cancelling a Source Settings preview lost the
Redo of that edit. edit_merged now keeps the redo steps it cleared, and
revert_merged gives them back; any other edit drops them.

Two Camera RAW panel messages wrote their menu paths with "▸" (U+25B8),
which the interface fonts do not have; since the egui 0.37 move a missing
glyph is an error, and the Camera RAW dialog tests failed on machines
without a system font that has it. The messages (and their catalog rows)
now use ">", as the rest of the interface does.

This is a proposal for the owner decision asked for in #383, not a routine contribution. It adds
an opt-in
red-sdkfeature that decodes Nikon ZR R3D NE clips (#1111, #1415) through RED's R3D SDK,which the user downloads and supplies; it is off by default and changes nothing in default builds.
The rules it needs are proposed in the same change, marked as proposed: a new
ADR 0002 and the matching paragraph in
AGENTS.md.If the owners decide camera RAW stays public-spec only, close this; nothing else depends on the
backend. It is the sibling of #1954 (BRAW through Blackmagic's runtime loaded in-process) and takes
a different shape, explained below so the two can be compared.
The first two commits are the playback plan for throughput-bound sources
(
MediaSource::frame_delivery,throughput_plan), which the backend needs and which is also proposedseparately in #3059; if that PR merges first, they drop out of this one on rebase. Works best with #3056, #3057 and
#3058, which move imports, the Media Browser and the audio meters off the UI thread: without them a card of R3D
clips still blocks the window while clips are probed, as any slow-to-open format does.
What it does
Four commits after those two:
PixelData::RgbaF16(premultiplied linear RGBA as IEEE halves, the GPU's
Rgba16Floatlayout, uploaded as is; CPUpaths widen it exactly), RED's published Log3G10 curve and REDWideGamutRGB primaries, and
cancel::with_still(a frame wanted with playback stopped, where latency matters). Generic andtested without any SDK.
RAW clips (three columns: decode quality and Decode Using; IPP2 colour space and gamma curve, tone
map, roll-off, HDR peak, chroma noise reduction, flashing pixel, metadata curves, creative LUT,
CDL; ISO, colour temperature, tint, exposure, each as shot until set), with Update RMD, Use
Changes and Use Settings; File ▸ Project Settings ▸ Camera RAW… holds the project's defaults
(schema v16, no-op migration). The dialog previews live and is one undo step
(
clip.sourceSettings {preview, commit, revert},Session::revert_merged/end_merged); thisfolds in what was planned as a separate Source Settings live-preview PR, since upstream's Source
Settings has no controls to preview without it. The compositor's interpretation follows the
development (
Project::color_space_override) and is not stored. The media pool hands a changedsetting to the open source instead of opening a second decoder.
.r3dfiles are recognised inevery build and report that they need the feature. All of it is tested with stand-in sources.
The model is written for any camera RAW source; I would like it to be the one #1065: CinemaDNG in MXF and camera raw Source Settings #1078's DNG raw
settings use too, rather than two dialogs.
crates/platform/src/red/,build.rs, thered-sdkfeatures offilmcraftand
filmcraft-cli): withRED_R3D_SDK_DIRnaming a local RED R3D SDK 9.2.1,build.rscompilessrc/red/helper.cpp, an original C++ program, against it (Windows x64 MSVC, Linux x64 GNU) andcopies RED's runtime libraries beside it.
They talk
the FCRD9 protocol: newline requests (
Oopen,Cclose,Vvideo with the development settingsas range-checked fields,
Wwrite the RMD sidecar,Aaudio,Ffree a slot), framed replieswith request ids, out of order, every byte treated as hostile input, 120-second deadlines and a
watchdog. A helper that crashes or hangs becomes a media error and a restarted helper (the frames
in flight are asked again once); idle helpers close; a GPU that cannot start a helper backs off
while the CPU helper serves.
docs/r3d-ne.mdis the user and developer document: setup, behaviour, limits, the protocol contract, tests, measurements and licensing.
unsafe: one new module, under ADR 0001Frames come back through shared memory the helper creates and the app maps read-only (a named

crates/platform/src/red/shm.rsis theone new

checked before mapping). It is described in an ADR 0001 addendum, marked as proposed with ADR 0002.
The bytes come from another process and are validated, never trusted; no Rust invariant rests on
the helper keeping to the protocol. Everything else in the backend is safe Rust. (An earlier draft

or in any build without the feature. The feature build stops without
RED_R3D_SDK_DIR; CI andofficial builds never enable it.
.RDCclips, N-RAW.NEV(Unable to open Nikon/RED Raw video files #1111 asksfor both), BRAW (BRAW Support #290) and ProRes RAW (ProRes RAW decode #345) are out of scope. No macOS.
This is usable for editing native 6K at reduced resolution, assemblies and grading; realtime 6K at
half resolution is not reached (proxies remain the workflow for that). The numbers, how they were
taken and the SDK's rounding of reduced decodes (measured, since the headers do not state it) are in
docs/r3d-ne.md.Licensing
A contributor's reading of RED's SDK agreement, not legal advice;
docs/r3d-ne.md§ Licensing hasthe details.
