Color ▸ Auto Correct: automatic white balance and exposure (lumetri.auto) - #3064
filmcraft_render::auto_correct: a robust grey-world illuminant estimate (clipped and black pixels
rejected, saturation-weighted after a provisional balance, a bright-surface second estimate) and
exposure from luma percentiles (p50 to 18 % grey, p99 under 90 %), with a confidence value; every
input bounded (sample cap, slider ranges, NaN / empty frames). It inverts Lumetri's own Temperature /
Tint model, now shared as effects::white_balance_gains.
lumetri.auto {clips, frames: playhead|sampled, whiteBalance, exposure, into: lumetri|raw, apply, targetGrey, highlightCeiling} renders the clip's source with its Lumetri bypassed and writes Basic
Correction (added when missing, keyframes kept); into: raw uses clip.sourceSettings where the
media offers development controls, else falls back with a note. One undo step per clip.
Color ▸ Auto Correct and an Auto Correct button in Basic Correction. Docs, command reference and a
batch example over the control channel (docs/examples/auto_correct_batch.py).
Added automatic white balance and exposure correction for selected or specified clips, accessible from the Color menu, Lumetri Basic Correction, or the control channel.
Analyze the playhead frame or sample multiple frames, and review measurements and confidence without applying changes.
Apply corrections to Lumetri settings or supported RAW controls; Lumetri is used when RAW controls are unavailable. Each clip’s changes can be undone in one step.
Added a batch workflow example for measuring, selectively correcting, and exporting clips.
Documentation
Added guidance on correction options, results, and batch workflows.

docs/color.md explains the measurement, the lumetri.auto contract and result, and the RAW route
with its fallback; docs/examples/auto_correct_batch.py imports a folder, measures every clip,
corrects the confident ones and exports with a named preset, polling jobs.list.

Summary
Pixel analysis and correction math crates/render/src/auto_correct.rs, crates/render/src/effects.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs
The render module samples pixels and estimates white balance and exposure. It reports measurements and confidence, maps results to Lumetri controls, and includes analysis tests. Lumetri now uses a shared white-balance gains helper.

The engine registers lumetri.auto, resolves clip targets and frame times, analyzes clips, and applies enabled corrections to Lumetri or eligible RAW controls. It handles per-clip errors and undo steps. The Lumetri panel button and Color menu entry expose the command. Tests cover results, options, targeting, fallback, keyframes, and errors.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 7cac2
The batch example now stops before export when correction fails. No remaining issue identified here prevents merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7cac2
Automatic correction uses the existing command permissions and remains scoped to the current project. No new security exposure was established. A bounded rollback issue remains: when undo history reaches capacity, undoing automatic correction can leave an effect that the operation added.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new per-clip transaction is not preserved when undo history reaches capacity. For a clip without Lumetri, effect creation and parameter application commit separate snapshots. Session::edit evicts old entries at the history limit, while collapse_history identifies new snapshots solely by the original history length. With a full history, that length never increases, so collapse is skipped; one undo restores the newly added effect's defaults rather than the pre-command project. Near capacity, collapse can likewise retain the intermediate snapshot. This breaks the documented guarantee that one undo also removes the added effect.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new capability is available to callers already authorized to invoke engine commands. Its reachable mutation scope is clip effects in the active project sequence. The current source-settings implementation exposes no RAW controls, so requesting RAW correction follows the disclosed Lumetri fallback rather than mutating shared media development.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing control server binds to loopback, requires a configured 64-character hexadecimal token, and authenticates each request before enqueueing it. Engine execution resolves the command and checks enablement before running it. These controls are unchanged by this PR.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a per-clip transaction that retains the pre-operation snapshot independently of bounded history length. The existing edit_group facility provides a repository-local mechanism that temporarily prevents history eviction and restores project, editor state, and redo history on failure.

…ds the control token
With linked selection, a selected clip's audio partner went to lumetri.auto and came back as an
error on every run. The timeline-selection fallback now keeps only video-track clips, like the
items branch, and errors as before when none is left. The batch example reads
FILMCRAFT_CONTROL_TOKEN and sends it with every request (as does the copy in docs/color.md), and
it reports per-clip correction errors and stops before exporting.

Stop the copied example before export when correction fails.
If lumetri.auto corrects some clips but returns per-clip errors, this example ignores those errors and exports a partially corrected sequence. Check the correction result and stop before file.exportMedia, as docs/examples/auto_correct_batch.py now does.

crates/engine/src/color_auto.rs:281-310 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Shared RAW roots get overwritten within one batch, and each clip still reports applied: true.
When into is "raw", raw_develop writes kelvin, tint, and exposure to the media root through clip.sourceSettings, not to the clip. Every clip that resolves to that root writes to the same media-level settings. Nothing in the batch path prevents a second write to a root that an earlier clip already developed. The batch result therefore reports each clip as applied, while only the last write to that root remains in effect.
The documented contract says each clip gets its own correction ("corrected", "items", and one undo step per clip). The result for an earlier clip reports the values it sent, but those values are no longer in effect. The docs define no fallback for shared roots. The fallback in docs/color.md applies only to media without RAW controls or builds without RAW development.
A conservative fix is to track roots written in the current batch. When a later clip resolves to a root already developed with different values, fall back to Lumetri for that clip and write a note, using the same fallback mechanism that raw_develop already uses.

Inside correct_clip, before calling raw_develop, check whether root is already in developed_roots. If it is, set into = Into::Lumetri and add a note that explains the shared root. Otherwise, push root after a successful RAW write.

…le stops on errors
The RAW route writes the media's development, not the clip's, so a later clip of one batch on the
same media overwrote an earlier clip's correction while both reported it applied. Later clips on
media this batch already developed now get Lumetri with a note. The example in docs/color.md
checks the correction's errors and stops before exporting, like the batch script.

Stop the copied example before export when correction fails (docs/color.md): the example keeps the lumetri.auto result and exits before file.exportMedia when errors is non-empty, like docs/examples/auto_correct_batch.py (checked with py_compile).
Shared RAW roots overwritten within one batch (color_auto.rs): the batch now tracks media whose RAW development it already set; a later clip on the same media gets Lumetri Basic Correction with a note instead of overwriting the first clip's development. docs/color.md says so. This path is only reachable in builds whose clip.sourceSettings offers development controls (this branch's offers none, so every RAW request already falls back to Lumetri), so no test can reach it here; the existing engine tests pass.
lumetri.auto can return successful measurements together with per-clip errors. The script prints those errors, but still corrects the successful clips and exports the sequence. The clips that failed measurement remain in the sequence and are exported without correction. Stop before correction or export when measured.get("errors") is non-empty.

When render_clip returns None for a sampled time, filter_map removes that sample. The command still reports a successful frame count, serializes the original requested times, and applies the correction when another sample succeeds. This result identifies an unmeasured time as measured and omits the failure.
Keep successful (time, image) pairs and report failed sample times in the result's error information. Preserve the existing error when all samples fail.

…hout a video clip
A sampled frame that did not render was dropped silently while the result still listed every
requested time as measured. The result now names only the measured frames and times, lists the
others under failedTimes, and adds an errors entry for the clip. The command is enabled only when
the selection reaches a video clip, so an audio-only selection no longer shows it enabled. The
example in docs/color.md checks the finished export job for an error.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
All three outside-diff findings from the latest review are fixed in 7cac26b:
Report failed sampled frames (color_auto.rs): each sample's render result is kept with its time. frames and times now name only the frames that were measured, the frames that did not render are listed under failedTimes, and errors gets an entry for the clip with those times. When every frame fails, the command still returns the same error. docs/color.md describes this. Test: frames_that_do_not_render_are_reported_not_measured.
Gate lumetri.auto on a reachable video target: has_targets now uses the same lookup as targets, so a selection (or named clips) with no video clip leaves the command disabled. Test: an_audio_only_selection_leaves_the_command_disabled. Explicitly naming an audio clip still says "not a video clip".
Check the export job result (docs/color.md): after polling, the example reads the finished job and exits non-zero on result.error. Checked with py_compile and against a mock control server whose export job fails.
