Part of #1065.

Builds on #1068 (CinemaDNG / DNG import) and #1077 (DNG raw settings, faster decode). Merge those two first. This branch contains both of them, merged rather than rebased.

Problem

  • CinemaDNG has two storage forms: a folder of DNG frames, and DNG frames wrapped in MXF. The CinemaDNG specification (§4.2) says a decoder shall read both. Only folders opened before this PR; an MXF file with DNG pictures showed the unreadable slate.
  • DNG footage could only be developed exactly as the file says. Premiere's Source Settings for camera raw lets you change white balance, exposure and decode quality per clip; FilmCraft had nothing equivalent.
  • Playback at reduced resolution still developed every frame at full size.

Spec basis

  • Adobe CinemaDNG Image Data Format Specification 1.0.0.0 (September 2009), §7: the MXF mapping.
    • Frame-wrapped DNG picture elements, element type 42h.
    • Essence container labels 06.0E.2B.34.04.01.01.xx.0F.0A.0D.0B.02.7F.01|02.00, for CFA and LinearRaw.
    • An RGBA descriptor and no coding label.
    • These labels are the specification's provisional, unregistered values from Adobe's experimental range (byte 9 = 0Fh). The specification says so itself in §7.4.
  • SMPTE RP 224 register (Labels.xml from registry.smpte-ra.org): the registered MXF-GC TIFF/EP container (0D 01 03 01 02 14) and the TIFF/EP picture coding labels (04 01 02 02 03 02 01 xx). These are also accepted.
  • RP 210 Elements register: the PixelLayout, ComponentMaxRef and ComponentMinRef ULs written in the RGBA descriptor.
  • SMPTE ST 377-1, 379-1/2 and 336, as the mxf crate already uses them.
  • Raw settings behaviour and the white-balance tint sign come from Adobe's public Premiere Pro and Camera Raw help only.
  • No other decoder's or demuxer's source was read. No tool we can run reads CinemaDNG MXF, so there is no external oracle.
  • Scope of the CinemaDNG-in-MXF claim: verified against files written by our own writer; no third-party file yet.

Fix

  • filmcraft-mxf
    • Codec::CinemaDng is recognised from any of these: the CinemaDNG container labels, the TIFF/EP labels, the 42h element type, or a TIFF header in the essence.
    • The writer can write CinemaDNG OP1a. It refuses clip-wrapped OP-Atom, because a TIFF dataset has no length field (§7.1.1).
  • filmcraft-codecs: MXF DNG pictures are developed one by one through filmcraft_media::still::dng, the same path as DNG stills and folders, outside the GOP cache. Edit rate, timecode and PCM come from the MXF.
  • filmcraft-media
    • New raw::RawSettings: white balance (as shot, or custom temperature and tint), exposure, highlights, demosaic quality and output space. These map onto #1065: DNG raw settings, faster decode, opcode lists, lossy JPEG DNG #1077's ProcessOptions.
    • New MediaSource::raw_info and MediaSource::with_raw_settings, implemented for DNG stills (new DngStill), DNG sequences and CinemaDNG MXF.
    • A FrameRequest scale below 1 develops a 1/2^k picture, never smaller than the size asked for. Measured on a synthetic edge picture (reduced_development_matches_the_box_filtered_full_picture): against the full development averaged down by 2x2 (1/2) and 4x4 (1/4), the mean absolute difference is 0.006 (of 1.0), the largest 0.053 (1/2) and 0.028 (1/4), at the edge pixel; the edge is not softer than in the averaged full picture. Not compared on a real camera file.
  • Project: new field Interpretation::raw.
    • Schema v17 → v18 with a no-op migration step (main is at v17). The bump is there because older builds would otherwise silently drop the settings when saving.
    • Older projects load unchanged.
    • Another PR that bumps to v18 at the same time will conflict in MIGRATIONS, in the SCHEMA_VERSION test and in docs/project-files.md.
  • Engine
    • clip.sourceSettings now edits camera raw items as one undo step. Values are validated. Highlight recovery is refused until the decoder implements it.
    • Called without settings, it still describes the item, as it did before.
    • New media.rawInfo returns the item's settings plus the file's as-shot temperature and tint.
    • The media pool keys each source by its raw settings, so a change, or undoing it, develops the media again.
  • UI: the Clip ▸ Source Settings… dialog edits camera raw footage.
    • Controls: As Shot or Custom white balance (temperature and tint), exposure, demosaic quality, Reset to As Shot.
    • Automation ids sourceSettings.*.
    • Other footage keeps the existing information dialog.
    • New strings are in es, fr, ja, zh-cn, id, it, ko and pt-br (machine translations, not reviewed by native speakers). The de, ru and uk catalogs hold menu labels only (a test enforces this), and the menu label was already there.

Tests

  • crates/codecs/tests/cinemadng_mxf.rs
    • Synthetic OP1a files wrapping DNGs from the dng test writer, both CFA lossless JPEG and LinearRaw.
    • Every frame's level is checked, in any order, along with frame rate, timecode, sample-exact sound and the registered openers.
    • Raw settings and reduced resolution apply to every frame.
    • A non-DNG picture gives an error.
    • Truncated and mutated files never panic.
  • crates/mxf writer and identification tests, including the refused OP-Atom case.
  • crates/engine/src/raw_settings_tests.rs
    • Exposure doubles every frame. Undo, redo and reset work.
    • The as-shot white balance round-trips: D65 reads as about 6500 K and tint +10.
    • 3200 K on D65 footage turns blue, and a positive tint turns magenta.
    • Fast demosaic and half-resolution requests work.
    • Stills and MXF change together in one undo step.
    • Settings survive save and reopen.
    • 18 hostile parameter sets leave the project unchanged.
    • Footage that isn't camera raw is refused.
  • Format: a v15 fixture with a DNG item loads unchanged, and raw settings round-trip through save and load.
  • Media: DNG stills and sequences pick up the settings and the reduced resolution.
  • menus_ui: a headless run drives the dialog by automation id.

Gates

cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -D warnings on every touched crate, and the full tests of dng, mxf, media, codecs, project, format, engine and ui-egui (--no-fail-fast, ffmpeg present). Also cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets and cargo xtask wasm. All green. The full cargo xtask ci was not run because the machine is shared.

What remains

  • No real camera CinemaDNG MXF has been tested.
  • OP-Atom CinemaDNG is read through the generic path but is untested.
  • Stereo CinemaDNG (two picture tracks) and audio held in separate MXF files are not handled.
  • Highlight recovery and output colour spaces other than scene-linear Rec. 709.
  • Media Browser and probe thumbnails use the default development.
  • Lossy / JPEG XL DNG and DNG opcode lists are not part of this branch: it contains no opcode handling, so no opcode correction is applied to any DNG.

Problem: a DNG developed only one way, exactly as the file says. A Raw
settings panel needs a stable struct to change white balance, exposure,
highlights, demosaic quality and output, and playback needs a way to
ask for a smaller picture.

Fix: add `ProcessOptions` (Default = today's output, bit-identical):
white balance AsShot | Custom { temperature, tint }, exposure in stops
(added to BaselineExposure), highlights Clip | Recover (Recover is
accepted but develops like Clip for now, documented), demosaic Fast
(bilinear) | High (Malvar-He-Cutler), output SceneLinearRec709, and an
optional target size for a reduced-resolution path (a hint; the full
size is made until that path lands). New entry points
`Dng::develop_with`, `decode_with`, `process::develop_with`,
`demosaic::demosaic_with`; `Dng::as_shot_temperature_tint` gives the
as-shot white as kelvin / tint. Temperature and tint are a point on the
Planckian locus (Krystek 1985) and a CIE 1960 delta-uv.

Problem: UI state and project files are serde, and the Raw settings
panel (built outside crates/dng) would otherwise have to mirror
`ProcessOptions` and its enums.

Fix: an optional `serde` feature on filmcraft-dng derives Serialize /
Deserialize on `ProcessOptions`, `WhiteBalance`, `Highlights`,
`DemosaicQuality` and `OutputSpace`; missing fields take their
defaults. Off by default, so the crate's dependencies are unchanged.

Problem: CinemaDNG has two storage forms, a folder of DNG frames and
MXF-wrapped DNG (CinemaDNG specification §4.2: a decoder shall read
both). Only folders opened; an MXF file with DNG pictures showed the
unreadable slate.

Fix: from the public CinemaDNG Image Data Format Specification 1.0.0.0
(§7) and the SMPTE RP 224 register:
- filmcraft-mxf identifies CinemaDNG pictures (Codec::CinemaDng) from
the spec's essence container labels (06.0E.2B.34.04.01.01.xx.0F.0A.
0D.0B.02.7F.01|02.00, CFA / LinearRaw; provisional labels from
Adobe's experimental range, not SMPTE-registered), the registered
MXF-GC TIFF/EP container and TIFF/EP picture coding labels, the 42h
picture element type, or a TIFF header in the essence.
- The MXF writer can write CinemaDNG (frame-wrapped DNG datasets,
element type 42h, RGBA descriptor with pixel layout and reference
levels, no coding label); clip-wrapped OP-Atom is refused because a
TIFF dataset has no length (§7.1.1).
- filmcraft-codecs develops each picture on its own with filmcraft-dng
(through filmcraft_media::still::dng, like DNG stills and folders)
into scene-linear Rec. 709 float frames, cached per picture outside
the GOP cache; size and pixel format come from the first DNG, edit
rate, timecode and PCM sound from the MXF.

Tests: synthetic OP1a files from our writer wrapping DNGs from the dng
test writer (CFA lossless JPEG and LinearRaw): every frame's level in
any order, rate, timecode, sample-exact sound, the registered openers;
a non-DNG picture is an error; truncation and mutation never panic.

… path

Problem: a 4096 x 2160 12-bit lossless-JPEG CinemaDNG frame took about
50 ms (tiles) to 115 ms (one strip) on 16 threads and about 200 ms on
one, too slow for smooth 4K playback, and every frame was developed at
full size even for small monitors and proxies.

Fix, without changing the output (f32 bit patterns compared):
- Lossless JPEG: one 13-bit lookup gives a code and its difference
bits together; the bit reader takes eight bytes at once when they
hold no 0xFF; per-predictor line loops.
- Tiles decode in parallel by bands straight into place; a single
strip covering the image is used without a copy.
- Normalisation: without black-level deltas, a lookup table per
CFA / black-level site replaces the per-sample float arithmetic
(each entry computed by the same expression).
- Demosaic, crop and colour run row by row from the normalised plane
(no padded copy, no RGB intermediate), with 5 x 5 windows sliding
along the five mirrored rows; the bilinear (Fast) Bayer demosaic
  sums in the reference order.
- ProcessOptions::target_size now develops Bayer, LinearRaw and mono
pictures at 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 size (the smallest covering the
target) by averaging each colour over the blocks, without demosaic.

The first version is kept as `reference` (feature `writer`, tests and
benchmarks only): tests/equivalence.rs checks identical raw samples and
developed bits over all Bayer phases, both qualities, odd crops,
active areas, linearisation, black deltas, codes above the bit depth,
LinearRaw, mono, other CFAs and tiny pictures; examples/bench.rs times
both interleaved at 1/4/16 threads. Best of 9 under load ~12: tiles
2.5x (1 thread) to 2.9x (16), one strip 2.1-2.6x; half size 3-4x.

…nverter convention

Problem: WhiteBalance::Custom's tint had the opposite sign to the usual
raw-converter control: a positive tint moved the white towards magenta,
so the developed picture turned greener, and as_shot_temperature_tint
reported D65 as about -10.

Fix: tint is now +delta-uv x 3000 (a white above the Planckian locus,
i.e. a greener light that the white balance compensates towards
magenta): positive tint gives a more magenta picture and D65 reads
about +10. Tests: the direction on a developed D65 grey (green falls
against red / blue as tint rises; the as-shot grey stays grey) and
D65's tint.

Problem: DNG footage could only be developed as the file says: no way
to change white balance, exposure or decode quality per clip
(Premiere's Source Settings for camera raw), and playback at reduced
resolution still developed every frame in full.

Fix:
- filmcraft-media: RawSettings (white balance as shot or custom
temperature / tint, exposure, highlights, demosaic quality, output
space) mapped onto filmcraft-dng's ProcessOptions; MediaSource gains
raw_info / with_raw_settings, implemented by DNG stills (new
DngStill), DNG sequences and CinemaDNG MXF. A FrameRequest scale
below 1 asks the decoder for a 1/2^k picture (never smaller than
  requested), cached per level.
- Project: Interpretation::raw (absent = as the file says). Schema
  v15 -> v16, a no-op step, because older builds would drop the
settings when saving; older projects load unchanged.
- Engine: clip.sourceSettings now edits camera raw items (one undo
step; values validated; highlight recovery refused until the decoder
  has it) and, without settings, describes the item as before;
media.rawInfo gives the settings and the as-shot temperature / tint.
The media pool keys sources by their raw settings, so a change or
  its undo develops again.

Tests: engine command tests on CinemaDNG folders, DNG stills and MXF
(exposure doubles every frame, undo / redo / reset, as-shot white
balance round trip, 3200 K turns D65 footage blue, positive tint
magenta, fast demosaic, half-resolution requests, save / reopen,
17 hostile parameter sets change nothing, non-raw footage refused);
media and codecs tests of the sources; a v15 fixture loads unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Problem: Clip > Source Settings... only said that FilmCraft has no
source settings, also for DNG / CinemaDNG footage it can now develop
with settings.

Fix: for camera raw footage the dialog edits white balance (As Shot /
Custom temperature and tint, starting from the file's as-shot values),
exposure, demosaic quality and Reset to As Shot, shows the highlight
handling and output colour space, and applies clip.sourceSettings on
OK (one undo step); other footage keeps the information dialog. Every
control has an automation id (sourceSettings.*). Strings in the
Spanish, French, Japanese and Simplified Chinese catalogs (the
menus-only catalogs take menu labels only).

Tests: headless menus_ui test drives the dialog by automation id
(custom white balance, exposure, fast demosaic, OK, reopen, reset,
cancel, non-raw footage).

…aDNG

Problem: the README cited CinemaDNG 1.1.0.0, while the public
specification is 1.0.0.0 (September 2009), and listed MXF-wrapped
CinemaDNG as unsupported although the MXF reader (storytold#1078) unwraps it
and hands the frames to this crate.

Fix: cite 1.0.0.0 (September 2009); say that this crate reads DNG
frames and MXF-wrapped CinemaDNG is unwrapped by crates/mxf (storytold#1078).

#1068 is merged and this branch carries #1077's commits (still open, and I have just commented on it), so I read what #1078 adds on top: crates/mxf (identification and writer), crates/codecs/src/mxf.rs, crates/media/src/{raw,sequence,still/dng}.rs, crates/engine/src/{raw_settings,media_pool,project_tools}.rs, the schema v16 step, panels/menu_dialogs.rs and the catalogs. I'm requesting changes for the missing translations (rule: every new string in each of the eight required catalogs); the other points are holds. I haven't built or run it (no cargo here; filmcraft has no hosted CI).

1. Fifteen new strings are in four catalogs; four required catalogs have none. The Source Settings dialog adds White Balance, White balance:, As Shot, Temperature:, Tint:, As shot: {temperature} K, tint {tint}, Exposure:, stops, Highlights: clipped (highlight recovery is not available yet), Decode Quality, Demosaic:, High (gradient-corrected), Fast (bilinear), Output color space: scene-linear Rec. 709 and Reset to As Shot through tl!/tlf!. They are added to es, fr, ja and zh-cn only. I checked main's id, it, ko and pt-br (full catalogs now): none of the fifteen is in any of them (0 of 4 for every row), so those four languages show this dialog in English, and the repository's coverage tests, which compare against es, are the ones I'd expect to fail for pt-br at least (not run). The description's "de, pt-br, ru and uk hold menu labels only (a test enforces this)" is out of date: pt-br, id, it and ko are full catalogs on main. Please add the fifteen rows to id, it, ko and pt-br.

2. The opcode lists of #1077 take effect through this PR for every DNG. The new still/dng.rs and sequence.rs develop every DNG frame through develop_with, so the opcode corrections (lens-shading GainMap, warps) apply to all DNG stills, folders and MXF footage in the app, by default, with interpretations that #1077's own description lists as unchecked against real camera files. That review point (opt-in until one real file with a GainMap and one with a warp is compared with the camera's output) carries over here; I'm not repeating it. This PR also changes what playback develops: a FrameRequest below scale 1 now asks the decoder for a 1/2^k block-averaged picture (scale_level, up to 1/16), so half-size playback is no longer "full frame, then scaled" for existing DNG sequences; the description says so, but a before/after of one frame at ½ and ¼ would show that the picture is as sharp as the old path's.

3. CinemaDNG-in-MXF is checked only against files this repository writes. tests/cinemadng_mxf.rs reads "synthetic OP1a files wrapping DNGs from the dng test writer" written by the new MxfWriter CinemaDNG path in crates/mxf; writer and reader share the author's reading of CinemaDNG §7, so a mistake in a label, element type or descriptor passes both. The labels are, as the description says, Adobe's provisional unregistered ones (byte 9 = 0Fh) next to the registered TIFF/EP ones, and the description says no real camera file was tried and no tool reads these files. That is honest, but "an MXF file with DNG pictures no longer shows the unreadable slate" is, for the reader, not verified on any real file. I'd want one real CinemaDNG MXF (from a camera, or from a tool that writes them) opened and a frame compared, or the claim limited to "files written by FilmCraft".

4. Smaller points.

  • Schema v15 → v16 is a no-op step (Interpretation::raw is #[serde(default, skip_serializing_if)]); the reason given (older builds would drop the field) is sound, and v15-dng.fcproj loads unchanged. The doc row in docs/project-files.md and the SCHEMA_VERSION test are updated. As the description says, any other PR that bumps to v16 conflicts; I found none open.
  • The dialog says "Highlights: clipped (highlight recovery is not available yet)" as a fixed line and clip.sourceSettings refuses Recover, which is consistent; #1077 lets the library accept it.
  • Interpretation now carries filmcraft_media::raw::RawSettings (project depends on media already on main), and RawSettings::validate bounds exposure (±8), temperature (2000–15000 K) and tint (±150) with tests for NaN and out-of-range values.
  • This PR contains #1077, so it can't merge before it; a rebase after #1077 lands (or after it is split) will shrink the diff to the review above.

Validation request (head dd8169a2a279cea02d6a1dbf5dde395ddfcbfdc7):

  • os: linux, windows and macos for the build and dialog; a real CinemaDNG MXF for point 3
  • commands: cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked --offline -- -D warnings; cargo test -p filmcraft-dng -p filmcraft-mxf -p filmcraft-media -p filmcraft-codecs -p filmcraft-format -p filmcraft-engine -p filmcraft-ui-egui --locked --offline; cargo xtask layers; cargo xtask assets; cargo xtask wasm; open a DNG still, a folder and an MXF, Clip ▸ Source Settings…, change white balance and exposure, undo, save and reopen, and play at ½ and ¼ resolution
  • expected: all pass, 0 ignored; settings survive save/reopen and undo; the dialog is translated in every catalog; half-size playback looks as before
  • holds: four missing catalogs (point 1), opcode corrections on by default (point 2, see #1077), MXF reading checked only against our own writer (point 3); clippy nonminimal_bool on main (#2007) is not caused by this PR

Suggested reviewers: fredapps, echelon

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 98448

Source Settings can leave some selected footage unchanged and can alter custom white balance during an unrelated edit. Fix the dialog behavior before merging; the remaining command, build, format-identification, and documentation concerns also warrant correction or explicit acceptance.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 98448

The examined decoding paths retain input limits, and settings edits use atomic project updates rather than modifying sources already in use. No introduced architecture-level security violation was established. Incomplete coverage of malformed inputs, concurrent use, and recovery combinations limits confidence.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attack surface is attacker-supplied media entering frame production in the application consuming it, including projects that reference that media. The traced addition establishes no new credential authority or remote-service boundary; deployment-wide or tenant-wide exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — A container's CinemaDNG classification does not authorize unchecked development. Selected sample bytes pass through the DNG parser, and raw development checks multiplication overflow, maximum samples, tile totals, and minimum encoded-data availability before allocating decoded output.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Large-dimension fallback handling is inherited rather than a newly introduced authority boundary: the base already obtained dimensions from MXF descriptors, whose dimension accessors are unchanged. The existing render image allocator applies a checked pixel-count limit. These facts do not establish that every fallback caller handles allocation rejection safely.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply a consistent dimension budget to metadata acceptance and fallback rendering, and explicitly handle image-allocation rejection before drawing a slate. This would strengthen inherited failure containment; it is not a claim that this PR introduced the condition.

Explanation

The title "#1065: CinemaDNG in MXF and camera raw Source Settings" matches the main changes in the raw summary. The changeset adds CinemaDNG-in-MXF recognition, OP1a writing, and DNG frame development. It also adds per-item camera-raw Source Settings, a schema v15-to-v16 migration, and a UI dialog. The objectives describe the same two features. The title names the PR number, which is a minor style issue but does not hide the meaning. Note that the objectives cite the PR as #1078, while the title uses #1065. The docs also cite #1065, so the number mismatch is a metadata question and does not change the title's relevance.

Update the header timestamp to match the new revision entry.

The header still says "Last updated: 2026-10-10". The revision history now has two 2026-10-11 entries, including the one this PR adds on line 64. Set "Last updated" to 2026-10-11, or to the merge date, and set "Change" to describe the latest change.

As per coding guidelines, update "the progress docs … the relevant parity doc and gaps.md, with their timestamps".

crates/dng/README.md:90-96
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the "Not supported" list: it still names MXF-wrapped CinemaDNG.

This PR adds CinemaDNG-in-MXF support. filmcraft-codecs develops each frame-wrapped DNG with this crate. Line 96 still lists "MXF-wrapped CinemaDNG" as unsupported. Line 25 of docs/codec-parity.md and docs/gaps.md now report it as supported. Remove the entry, or replace it with the real limits: OP-Atom reading is untested, stereo is not handled, and highlight recovery is not implemented. Lines 3–4 also say the crate depends "only on thiserror and … rayon". Add the optional serde feature that Cargo.toml now declares.

📝 Proposed fix

+restart intervals that split a line, and highlight recovery (`Highlights::Recover` develops like
+`Clip`). CinemaDNG in MXF is unwrapped by `filmcraft-codecs` (synthetic files only).

As per coding guidelines, the crate README must hold "behaviour decisions, test results, limitations" and must "record known bugs and limitations in the crate README".

Gate the example on the writer and threads features.

bench.rs directly uses rayon::ThreadPoolBuilder, but rayon is enabled only by threads. A --no-default-features --all-targets build can therefore fail to compile this example. The example also uses the writer API.

Bypass proxies for camera-raw clips unless their render settings are tracked.

clip.sourceSettings lets users change settings for CinemaDNG MXF clips. Proxy creation renders the current settings into ProRes or H.264 output. Proxy playback then returns those encoded frames before applying the current settings. A later exposure or white-balance edit is not shown while proxies are enabled.

Fix the doubled quote in the clip.sourceSettings parameter description.

The params string contains "whiteBalance"":"asShot"|"custom"?. The extra " breaks the JSON-ish description. Agents and the MCP schema read this text through command.list, so the whiteBalance key is shown in a malformed form.

Use one CinemaDNG specification edition in every README.

This row cites "1.0.0.0 (September 2009)". crates/codecs/tests/cinemadng_mxf.rs line 1 also cites 1.0.0.0. crates/dng/README.md line 19 cites "1.1.0.0 (2009)". The repository rule requires the spec edition used to be recorded in the crate README. Two editions for the same document make that record unreliable. Confirm which edition was used for §7, then use the same value in both READMEs and in the test header.

As per coding guidelines, contributors must "Record the spec edition used in the crate README."

Keep the cache key consistent for raw clips.

MediaPool::insert_file stores file:{path}, but resolve expects media_key(m), which includes the raw settings. Refresh and relink can call insert_file for clips that already have raw settings. The next resolve can reopen the file and apply the settings again. Cache the raw-developed source under the raw key, or avoid caching the unprocessed source for these clips.

Do not classify every TIFF essence as CinemaDNG.

sniff_picture checks only the TIFF byte-order marker and magic. In crates/mxf/src/file.rs, the sniffed codec replaces the metadata-derived codec when they differ. A non-DNG TIFF essence can therefore be reported as Codec::CinemaDng. DNG is an extension of TIFF 6.0, so the TIFF header alone does not identify DNG. (helpx.adobe.com)

Require DNG-specific evidence or limit this sniff to explicitly identified TIFF/EP or CinemaDNG tracks. Add a test that rejects an ordinary TIFF header.

I narrowed the CinemaDNG-in-MXF claim in the description: it is verified against files written by our own writer, and no third-party file has been tried yet. The description also now says that the opcode corrections are opt-in and off by default (this comes from #1077). No code change.

Fix the malformed whiteBalance key in the clip.sourceSettings parameter description.

The params string for clip.sourceSettings has an extra quote after whiteBalance. The advertised key is "whiteBalance"", not "whiteBalance". Any consumer that reads this description receives an incorrect parameter name.

Keep the CinemaDNG descriptor at 16 bits.

PictureDesc.depth is public, so a caller can set it to 10 after PictureDesc::new. This branch then writes a 10-bit RGB pixel layout and a maximum reference level of 1023. That conflicts with the writer's documented 16-bit decoded-image descriptor. Use 16-bit component values for CinemaDNG, or reject a different depth before writing the file.

Preserve all selected items when opening Source Settings.

If the user selects multiple raw items, the query describes the first item, and this line puts only that item in items. The engine then applies the submitted settings to only that item. Capture the full selection for the dialog and submit all selected raw item IDs, so the edit matches the selection.

Keep custom white-balance values at their stored precision.

If an item has a fractional custom temperature or tint, these lines round the value in the dialog parameters. Pressing OK then saves the rounded value, even when the user changes only exposure. Keep the original numeric values in the parameters; round only displayed text.

Merged current main into this branch. Main split project/src/lib.rs into several files, so the new raw Source Settings field on Interpretation now lives in project/src/item.rs. Clippy and the tests of the touched crates pass.

Merged current main: conflicts in the lossless JPEG decoder and the DNG roundtrip tests, resolved like in the dng-decode-plus PR (this branch shares its commits). Also adapted the Source Settings temperature/tint rows to main's new NumberOptions signature in the number() helper; filmcraft-dng, filmcraft-mxf and the menus_ui tests pass.

Follow-up: main now denies clippy::too_many_arguments, so full() in the DNG process module takes its plane dimensions as one tuple. No behaviour change; clippy on the touched crates is clean.

Merged current main (head 1f46b2f). Main is now at schema v17, so the raw Source Settings step moved from v16 to v18 (lib.rs, SCHEMA_VERSION test, docs/project-files.md); no other conflicts.

Review points:

  1. Translations: the fifteen strings are in id, it, ko and pt-br (since 5470c6e); the PR description now lists all eight catalogs.
  2. Opcode corrections: this branch contains no opcode handling at all, so nothing is applied by default; the description no longer refers to an opt-in flag. Half/quarter playback: new test reduced_development_matches_the_box_filtered_full_picture compares the 1/2 and 1/4 development with the full development averaged down. On a synthetic edge picture the mean difference is 0.006 and the largest 0.053 (1/2) / 0.028 (1/4), at the edge pixel, and the edge is not softer. Not compared on a real camera file.
  3. CinemaDNG in MXF: the claim in the description is limited to files written by our own writer; no real camera MXF was tried.

Checks on this head: cargo fmt --check, clippy -D warnings (format, media, dng, mxf, codecs, project, engine, ui-egui, all targets) and the tests of format, media, mxf, project, engine and ui-egui pass locally. CI has not run on this head yet.

Pushed 1ac503f (follow-up to the review of the merge):

  • clip.sourceSettings: null (and reset: false) count as unset, so pressing OK in the dialog without a change no longer records an empty undo step; an edit that leaves an item's settings unchanged is skipped. false for a numeric or string parameter is still a type error. Tests added for both, and for a multi-item edit where one item already has the settings.
  • Dialog: the first selected clip is edited (documented in the code, clip.sourceSettings itself takes several items); Reset to As Shot now also resets highlights and output.
  • Docs: removed the two stale entries from the missing list in docs/gaps.md, "Camera raw settings" in the schema table, codec-parity changelog row dated 2026-11-01; fixed a stray quote in the command's parameter string and a duplicated comment line in the Korean catalog.
  • The 1/2 and 1/4 comparison test now also checks the signed mean offset (measured -0.0062 at both sizes, about one pixel of the test ramp; the bound 0.008 would catch a gain error of roughly 1.6 % or more).

Local checks on this head: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -D warnings, and the tests of dng, mxf, media, codecs, format, project, engine and ui-egui pass, except avi_tests::damaged_video_index_entries_lose_no_pictures in codecs, which failed once in the parallel run and passed when run alone (not touched by this PR). CI has not run on this head yet.

Two notes for whoever merges this:

  • Schema version: this PR adds the step v17_to_v18. The open PR Monitor grids, Warp Stabilizer persistence, MKV audio, effect presets #3829 also adds a v17_to_v18 step and asserts SCHEMA_VERSION == 18. Whichever of the two merges second has to renumber its step to v19 and move its row in docs/project-files.md; the version is derived from the length of MIGRATIONS, so there is no way to reserve v19 in advance. It is a small change, but it is a guaranteed conflict.
  • Known limit: if applying the raw Source Settings to a clip fails in media_pool, the old source is kept and the failure is only logged (log::warn!). The user does not see it, because there is no error path in the UI for this case (the offline slate is for missing files). Showing it would need a design decision for a new error display, so it is not part of this PR. It can be a follow-up issue if wanted.
