Part of #1065. Builds on #1068, so merge that first. This branch contains #1068's two commits; once #1068 is merged, only the commits below remain in the diff.

Problem

After #1068, FilmCraft decodes DNG / CinemaDNG, but:

  • every frame develops one fixed way, and a Raw settings panel has no struct to work with;
  • lossy JPEG DNGs (Compression 34892) are refused;
  • opcode lists (lens-shading gain maps, bad-pixel maps, vignette and distortion corrections, trims) are ignored (they stay ignored by default after this PR; see the opt-in below);
  • a 4K 12-bit frame takes about 45–100 ms on 16 threads and 190 ms on one, which is too slow for smooth 4K playback;
  • small monitors and proxies still develop at full size.

Spec basis

  • Adobe DNG Specification 1.7.1.0 (Sept. 2023), used together with 1.4–1.7:
    • Compression 34892 (allowed only for 8-bit LinearRaw);
    • chapter 5 (mapping to linear reference values);
    • chapter 7 (opcode list processing: the list format, flags, the 14 opcodes, the WarpRectilinear2 skip rule).
  • ITU-T T.81 for the lossless-JPEG decoder.
  • Krystek (1985), for the Planckian locus used by the temperature/tint white balance.
  • No other decoder's source was read. Baseline JPEG is decoded by the image crate (jpeg feature only), which the workspace already uses in codecs and media. Cargo.lock only gains the image edge under filmcraft-dng; no new crate.

Fix (one commit each)

  1. ProcessOptions (Default gives exactly today's output). Entry points: Dng::develop_with and decode_with. Fields:
    • white balance: AsShot, or Custom { temperature, tint }. Tint follows the usual raw-converter sign: positive is more magenta, and D65 reads about +10 (fixed in a follow-up commit). Dng::as_shot_temperature_tint returns the as-shot values.
    • exposure in stops;
    • highlights: Clip, or Recover (documented as not implemented yet: it currently develops like Clip);
    • demosaic: Fast (bilinear) or High (Malvar);
    • output: SceneLinearRec709;
    • target_size.
    • An optional serde feature derives Serialize/Deserialize for UI state.
  2. Faster decode and development, with bit-identical output.
    • Lossless JPEG: a combined 13-bit code+difference lookup, a bit reader that refills 8 bytes at a time, and per-predictor line loops.
    • Tiles decode by bands straight into place, and a single strip is used without a copy.
    • Normalisation uses lookup tables when there are no black deltas.
    • Demosaic, crop and colour run row by row, with no padded copy and no RGB intermediate.
    • target_size develops Bayer, LinearRaw and mono pictures at 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 size by block averaging, without a demosaic.
  3. Opcode lists 1/2/3 (opt-in: ProcessOptions::apply_opcodes, default off). All opcodes 1–14 are implemented and run at the stages the spec defines (List2 runs before white balance). Values are clipped after each opcode. Unknown or newer opcodes are skipped when marked optional and are an error naming them when mandatory. Preview-only opcodes are skipped on the reduced-size path. Counts are checked before anything is allocated. Where the spec leaves room, the interpretation is recorded in the README.
  4. Lossy JPEG DNG (34892). Tiles and strips with 1 or 3 components. Files outside the spec (CFA data, depths other than 8 bits) are refused with a message that names lossy JPEG. The decoder runs under catch_unwind with an allocation limit, and a tiny file cannot claim a huge picture.

Measurements

Synthetic 4096 × 2160 12-bit lossless-JPEG Bayer frame, cargo run --release -p filmcraft-dng --example bench.

  • The reference is #1065: CinemaDNG / DNG import with a clean-room decoder #1068's pipeline, kept as filmcraft_dng::reference and run interleaved with the new code in the same process.
  • Times are the best of 9 runs, in ms.
  • The machine was shared: another agent was benchmarking HEVC, and the load average is shown next to every table.

Full size (load average 21.4 → 18.1):

frame threads before after speedup
tiles 256² 1 192.1 78.0 2.46×
tiles 256² 4 59.8 21.6 2.77×
tiles 256² 16 44.2 14.4 3.07×
one strip 1 186.7 74.9 2.49×
one strip 4 107.8 41.0 2.63×
one strip 16 101.1 37.9 2.67×
  • Raw decode alone: about 2.2× faster.
  • A single strip is limited by its serial entropy decode: 67 → 28.6 ms.

Reduced path with target_size: (2048, 1080), giving half size (load average 18.1 → 17.0). "Before" is the full-size reference.

frame threads before after speedup
tiles 256² 1 192.3 49.6 3.87×
tiles 256² 16 50.6 10.8 4.68×
one strip 16 100.7 32.2 3.13×

Tests

  • tests/equivalence.rs: raw samples and developed f32 bit patterns are identical to the reference across:
    • all 4 Bayer phases, both demosaic qualities, sizes from 1×1 to 26×18;
    • odd crops and crops at the border, active-area offsets;
    • LinearizationTable, per-site black levels with and without deltas;
    • LJ92 codes above the stated bit depth, all predictors, restarts, tiles and strips, both byte orders;
    • LinearRaw, mono, and non-Bayer CFAs.
    • It also checks the reduced path's sizes and flat colours.
    • A deliberate one-ulp change in the demosaic makes it fail.
  • tests/opcodes.rs and the opcode unit tests (the file tests turn apply_opcodes on; one test checks that the default ignores the lists):
    • every opcode against known results, the stage of each list, the optional flag, the preview path, the skip rule;
    • hostile parameters, plus 3000 file mutations under catch_unwind.
  • tests/lossy.rs:
    • 1 and 3 components in tiles and strips; samples equal the JPEG decoder's output;
    • LinearizationTable expansion;
    • CFA and 12-bit files refused, and a huge claimed size refused;
    • every truncation, plus 3000 mutations.
  • roundtrip.rs adds ProcessOptions tests (default identical, exposure, custom WB, the tint direction on a grey, Fast vs High, serde) and updates the lossy-JPEG error assertion.

Gates

  • cargo fmt --all --check: passes.
  • clippy -D warnings for filmcraft-dng (all targets, all features) and filmcraft-media: passes.
  • Full tests of filmcraft-dng, filmcraft-media and filmcraft-engine (543 passed): all pass.
  • cargo xtask layers: passes.
  • cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p filmcraft-dng -p filmcraft-media: passes.
  • I did not run the full cargo xtask ci, because the machine is shared.

What remains

  • JPEG XL DNG (52546): a separate draft PR adds it behind an off-by-default feature, because it needs a new dependency (maintainer decision).
  • Highlights::Recover is not implemented yet: the setting can be stored, but it develops like Clip.
  • Known deviation from DNG chapter 5, inherited from #1065: CinemaDNG / DNG import with a clean-room decoder #1068 and kept so the output stays bit-identical: the rescale divides by WhiteLevel minus each pixel's own black level, while the spec uses the plane's largest black level. The two differ only when black levels vary within one colour plane. The README notes this.
  • Opcode interpretations to check against real camera files:
    • which coordinates List2 and List3 use (I used ActiveArea coordinates);
    • GainMap's relative positions;
    • Delta and Polynomial units in List1.
  • Not applied: warps on CFA mosaics, and TrimBounds before List3.
  • No buffer reuse across frames yet: the API returns a new Vec. Wiring target_size and the Raw settings into media/engine and the UI belongs to the parallel MXF / Raw-settings work, so it is not in this PR.
  • docs/codec-parity.md: the CinemaDNG row still lists lossy DNG and opcode lists as missing. I left the doc for the PR that adds the Raw settings UI, to avoid conflicts.

Opcode lists are opt-in

The opcode interpretations (coordinates, GainMap positions, Delta/Polynomial units) have not been compared with a real camera file, so apply_opcodes is off by default. Real-file before/after comparisons (a GainMap file and a warp file against the camera JPEG) will follow; the default can change after that. The speed work (commit 2) is measured and on by default.

Problem: a DNG developed only one way, exactly as the file says. A Raw
settings panel needs a stable struct to change white balance, exposure,
highlights, demosaic quality and output, and playback needs a way to
ask for a smaller picture.

Fix: add `ProcessOptions` (Default = today's output, bit-identical):
white balance AsShot | Custom { temperature, tint }, exposure in stops
(added to BaselineExposure), highlights Clip | Recover (Recover is
accepted but develops like Clip for now, documented), demosaic Fast
(bilinear) | High (Malvar-He-Cutler), output SceneLinearRec709, and an
optional target size for a reduced-resolution path (a hint; the full
size is made until that path lands). New entry points
`Dng::develop_with`, `decode_with`, `process::develop_with`,
`demosaic::demosaic_with`; `Dng::as_shot_temperature_tint` gives the
as-shot white as kelvin / tint. Temperature and tint are a point on the
Planckian locus (Krystek 1985) and a CIE 1960 delta-uv.

Problem: UI state and project files are serde, and the Raw settings
panel (built outside crates/dng) would otherwise have to mirror
`ProcessOptions` and its enums.

Fix: an optional `serde` feature on filmcraft-dng derives Serialize /
Deserialize on `ProcessOptions`, `WhiteBalance`, `Highlights`,
`DemosaicQuality` and `OutputSpace`; missing fields take their
defaults. Off by default, so the crate's dependencies are unchanged.

… path

Problem: a 4096 x 2160 12-bit lossless-JPEG CinemaDNG frame took about
50 ms (tiles) to 115 ms (one strip) on 16 threads and about 200 ms on
one, too slow for smooth 4K playback, and every frame was developed at
full size even for small monitors and proxies.

Fix, without changing the output (f32 bit patterns compared):
- Lossless JPEG: one 13-bit lookup gives a code and its difference
  bits together; the bit reader takes eight bytes at once when they
  hold no 0xFF; per-predictor line loops.
- Tiles decode in parallel by bands straight into place; a single
  strip covering the image is used without a copy.
- Normalisation: without black-level deltas, a lookup table per
  CFA / black-level site replaces the per-sample float arithmetic
  (each entry computed by the same expression).
- Demosaic, crop and colour run row by row from the normalised plane
  (no padded copy, no RGB intermediate), with 5 x 5 windows sliding
  along the five mirrored rows; the bilinear (Fast) Bayer demosaic
  sums in the reference order.
- ProcessOptions::target_size now develops Bayer, LinearRaw and mono
  pictures at 1/2, 1/4 or 1/8 size (the smallest covering the
  target) by averaging each colour over the blocks, without demosaic.

The first version is kept as `reference` (feature `writer`, tests and
benchmarks only): tests/equivalence.rs checks identical raw samples and
developed bits over all Bayer phases, both qualities, odd crops,
active areas, linearisation, black deltas, codes above the bit depth,
LinearRaw, mono, other CFAs and tiny pictures; examples/bench.rs times
both interleaved at 1/4/16 threads. Best of 9 under load ~12: tiles
2.5x (1 thread) to 2.9x (16), one strip 2.1-2.6x; half size 3-4x.

…nverter convention

Problem: WhiteBalance::Custom's tint had the opposite sign to the usual
raw-converter control: a positive tint moved the white towards magenta,
so the developed picture turned greener, and as_shot_temperature_tint
reported D65 as about -10.

Fix: tint is now +delta-uv x 3000 (a white above the Planckian locus,
i.e. a greener light that the white balance compensates towards
magenta): positive tint gives a more magenta picture and D65 reads
about +10. Tests: the direction on a developed D65 grey (green falls
against red / blue as tint rises; the as-shot grey stays grey) and
D65's tint.

Problem: DNG opcode lists were ignored, so lens shading gain maps
(phones and many cameras), bad pixel maps, vignette and distortion
corrections and trims that a file asks for were silently left out,
and an opcode a reader must apply could not be refused.

Fix (DNG 1.7.1.0 chapter 7): a big-endian opcode list parser (at most
256 opcodes, every count checked against the parameter bytes before
allocating) and the opcodes WarpRectilinear, WarpFisheye,
WarpRectilinear2 (with the skip rule), FixVignetteRadial,
FixBadPixelsConstant / List, TrimBounds, MapTable, MapPolynomial,
GainMap, DeltaPerRow / Column and ScalePerRow / Column. OpcodeList1 runs
on the stored samples (0-65535), OpcodeList2 on the linear values
before white balance (the fused normalise splits only then),
OpcodeList3 on the demosaiced camera values; values are clipped after
each opcode. Unknown opcodes or ones newer than 1.7.1.0 are skipped
when optional and an error naming them when mandatory; preview-only
opcodes are skipped on the reduced-resolution path, and a mandatory
OpcodeList3 keeps full resolution. Interpretations where the spec
leaves room are recorded in the README. Files without opcode lists
develop exactly as before.

Tests: unit tests per opcode with known results (tables, polynomials,
deltas, scales, gain map interpolation and edge replication, vignette,
warps reproducing a ramp, fisheye, the skip rule, bad pixels, trim,
hostile parameters) and whole-file tests of each list's stage, the
optional flag, the preview path, and 3000 mutations under catch_unwind.

Problem: lossy DNGs (DNG 1.4 Compression 34892, used for proxy and
"lossy compressed" DNGs, 8-bit LinearRaw tiles usually with a
LinearizationTable) were refused as unsupported.

Fix: decode each tile or strip with the baseline JPEG decoder the
workspace already depends on (`image` with only its jpeg feature, as in
crates/codecs and crates/media; no new crate in Cargo.lock, builds for
wasm32), one component as greyscale or three as colour, the samples
filling the chunk in raster order as with lossless JPEG. As the spec
allows it only for 8-bit LinearRaw, CFA or other depths are refused with
a message naming lossy JPEG. The decoder runs under catch_unwind with an
allocation limit, its picture must match the chunk, and a tiny file
cannot claim a huge picture (at least two bits per 8 x 8 block). Info
reports "lossy JPEG". The test writer gains a lossy JPEG path through
`image`'s encoder.

…aDNG

Problem: the README cited CinemaDNG 1.1.0.0, while the public
specification is 1.0.0.0 (September 2009), and listed MXF-wrapped
CinemaDNG as unsupported although the MXF reader (storytold#1078) unwraps it
and hands the frames to this crate.

Fix: cite 1.0.0.0 (September 2009); say that this crate reads DNG
frames and MXF-wrapped CinemaDNG is unwrapped by crates/mxf (storytold#1078).

I read the 23 files that remain after #1068 merged (crates/dng: options.rs, opcode.rs, process.rs, raw.rs, ljpeg.rs, demosaic.rs, color.rs, lib.rs, the writer, the reference/ copy and the four test files) and the description's measurements. I'm leaving this as a comment, not an approval: the numbers and the equivalence tests are good, but one of the four changes (opcode lists) switches on, for every real camera file that carries them, corrections whose interpretation the author lists as unchecked, and the PR is large enough that I'd ask for a split. I haven't built, run or benchmarked it (no cargo here; filmcraft has no hosted CI).

What holds.

  • Speed (rule 5). The claim is measured: a synthetic 4096×2160 12-bit frame, the old pipeline kept as filmcraft_dng::reference and run interleaved with the new one in the same process, best of 9, with the load average reported (2.5–3.1× full size, 3.1–4.7× on the reduced path). tests/equivalence.rs compares the raw samples and the developed f32 bit patterns with the reference over Bayer phases, crops, tables, black-level layouts, predictors, restarts, tiles/strips and byte orders, and the author says a one-ulp change makes it fail. That is the right test for "faster, same output". The one caveat is that the frame is synthetic and the machine was loaded (~18–21), so absolute times mean little; the ratios in one process are what to read.
  • Reference code isn't shipped. reference is #[cfg(any(test, feature = "writer"))], and writer is only enabled in dev-dependencies of engine and media (and the crate's own), so the old pipeline isn't in the app build.
  • Hostile files. Opcode counts are checked against the parameter bytes and capped at 256 per list; the lossy-JPEG path checks the claimed size against the tile (total > need*4 + 65 536), against MAX_SAMPLES, sets an allocation limit, and runs the third-party decoder under catch_unwind. The new unwrap/index uses in src are in test modules or have constant offsets (win[(dy+2)…] with dy in −2..2).
  • Known deviation from DNG chapter 5 (rescale by WhiteLevel minus each pixel's own black level) is inherited from #1068, kept so the output stays bit-identical, and written down in the README. That is the honest way to do it.

1. Opcode lists change real files' output on interpretations nobody has checked against a camera file. Until now OpcodeList1–3 were ignored; with this PR every file that has them (phone DNGs and many mirrorless bodies write lens-shading GainMaps, WarpRectilinear and bad-pixel opcodes) is corrected. The description's own list of open points says: which coordinates List2/List3 use (ActiveArea is assumed), GainMap's relative positions, and the units of Delta and Polynomial in List1; the README adds that warps on a CFA mosaic and TrimBounds before List3 are not applied. The tests prove the code follows the author's reading ("every opcode against known results" are results computed from that same reading), and the description says there's no outside oracle and no real camera file was tried. A wrong reading here doesn't fail anything; it gives a plausible picture with a colour cast or a shifted vignette fix. This should not be on by default until at least one real file with a GainMap (and one with a warp) has been compared with the camera's own JPEG or a reference render and the picture is described. Either hold the opcode part back (an opt-in ProcessOptions field, off by default, so the first real-file result can flip it), or attach the comparison.

2. Split it. The PR combines four changes with different risk: (a) ProcessOptions and the white-balance/exposure API, (b) the faster decode (bit-identical by test), (c) opcode lists (new behaviour, point 1), (d) lossy JPEG DNG (a new accepted format). The description already has one commit each; as separate PRs (b) could merge on the strength of the equivalence tests alone, while (c) waits for real-file evidence and (d) for its own sample. Today a maintainer can't take (b) without taking (c).

3. Smaller points.

  • Highlights::Recover is accepted by the public ProcessOptions and develops like Clip (documented in the type). #1078 refuses it in the engine; the library itself will let a caller select a mode that does nothing. A Result error from develop_with for Recover (or removing the variant until it exists) keeps the API from promising it.
  • docs/codec-parity.md still lists lossy DNG and opcode lists as missing after this PR adds them (the author deferred it to avoid conflicts); #1078 is the PR that would update it, so that is fine as long as the two merge together.
  • lossy_jpeg reads 8-bit samples only, as the spec allows for 34892 LinearRaw; files outside that are refused with a message naming lossy JPEG, which is the right behaviour (rule 6: strict, with the failure visible).
  • The new image dependency (jpeg feature only) is already in the workspace; Cargo.lock gains only the edge under filmcraft-dng, as stated.

Validation request (head ddade2776cafa5afb1695de5d23bac2ab3ec8c77):

  • os: linux, windows and macos for the build; any machine for the tests; real DNG files for point 1
  • commands: cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo clippy -p filmcraft-dng -p filmcraft-media --all-targets --locked --offline -- -D warnings; cargo test -p filmcraft-dng -p filmcraft-media -p filmcraft-engine --locked --offline; cargo xtask layers; cargo xtask wasm; cargo run --release -p filmcraft-dng --example bench; decode one real DNG with a GainMap and one with a WarpRectilinear with and without opcodes applied and compare both with the camera's JPEG
  • expected: all pass, 0 ignored; the equivalence test bit-identical; the opcode-corrected picture closer to the camera's than the uncorrected one
  • holds: opcode interpretations unchecked on real files (point 1), the four-way mix (point 2); clippy nonminimal_bool on main (#2007) is not caused by this PR

Thanks for the review. Opcode lists are now opt-in: new ProcessOptions::apply_opcodes, default off, so camera files develop as before unless it is set. The speed work stays on by default. We will gather real-file before/after comparisons for the opcodes later, and the default can change after that. Tests and the PR text are updated.

The four changes are separate commits, so they can be reviewed one by one. If you still want a split into separate PRs, tell me and I will do it.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review cd1e0

Some DNGs can decode incorrectly, and certain lossy-JPEG writes can panic or return unreadable files. These failures should be addressed before merging; the reported oversized-tile allocation path is fixed.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 4e5d4

Opcode processing adds a file-controlled workload that can consume excessive CPU before validation rejects it. Normal application decoding leaves opcodes disabled, which limits current exposure, but exported processing functions do not independently enforce that opt-out.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: New FixBadPixelsList execution permits file-controlled rectangle-count multiplied by image-area work before rejecting excessive bad-pixel coverage. A small metadata expansion can therefore monopolize decoding CPU when opcode processing is enabled. The list-count limit and eventual coverage rejection do not contain this work.
  • Low · security · observed: Opcode opt-out is enforced in Dng::develop_with, but not in exported process::develop or process::develop_with. Composing Dng::params(), which loads opcode lists, with these processing functions executes Lists 2 and 3 even under default options. This creates an alternate route to file-controlled work despite the documented opt-out; no production caller of that composition was established.

  • inferred — A malicious DNG can target CPU availability in a process that enables opcode execution or directly supplies populated lists to the exported processing API. The inspected media adapter uses default decoding and does not expose this opcode path. Shared-service, tenant-wide, and external-consumer exposure is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — One opcode can contain 65,536 repeated full-frame rectangles in roughly 1 MiB of rectangle parameters. For a 1920 by 1080 image, the rasterization loops imply roughly 136 billion mask writes before the bad-pixel coverage rejection. This is a source-derived amplification example, not a measured exploit; default high-level decoding skips the lists.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — File-controlled metadata crosses from bounded TIFF bytes into opcode parameters and image-processing work. The high-level caller controls whether this transition occurs through apply_opcodes. That selection is not independently enforced by the exported process functions.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Malformed parameters and mandatory unsupported opcodes propagate errors, while optional unsupported operations may be skipped. Call-local image state limits partial-result exposure, but the rectangle coverage check occurs after expensive rasterization and therefore is not a preventive availability control.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply a cumulative work budget before rectangle rasterization, accounting for clipped rectangle areas and repeated operations. Make opcode selection consistent across supported public processing entrypoints, or explicitly separate APIs that consume already-authorized opcode lists.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check that a lossy JPEG tile has one channel per sample.

lossy_jpeg receives only need, the sample count. It does not know the file's samples per pixel. If a file says one sample per pixel and its tile is an RGB JPEG, the size check (total is at least need) still passes. The first need bytes of interleaved RGB are then used as greyscale samples, so the picture comes out scrambled with no error. A three-sample file with a greyscale JPEG three times as wide has the same problem.

Pass l.samples_per_pixel to lossy_jpeg and return Malformed when channels differs from it.

A small crafted tiled DNG can force allocations of many gigabytes. Cap the total number of coded samples across all chunks.

The "at least one bit per sample" check runs on each chunk by itself, and coded adds up c.bytes.len() for every chunk. Nothing stops two tiles from pointing at the same bytes. Tiles are also decoded at full size (h = th), even when the image is much smaller.

How the attack works:

  • The file declares ImageWidth = 65535, ImageLength = 1, TileWidth = 1, TileLength = 65535. That gives total = 65535, which passes MAX_SAMPLES.
  • The file has 65 535 TileOffsets entries. All of them point at one 8 KB lossless JPEG with an SOF of 1 × 65535.
  • Every tile passes n / 8 <= c.bytes.len(). The total check also passes, because coded counts the shared 8 KB once per tile.
  • When the bytes run out, Bits::fill feeds zeros. A one-bit Huffman code for category 0 therefore decodes every tile without error.
  • The whole image is one band. The band collects every decode_chunk result into decoded before it copies anything. That is about 4.3 × 10⁹ samples, or roughly 8.6 GB, from a file of about 512 KB.

This path is reached from decode, Dng::develop and Dng::raw, so the DNG still and CinemaDNG import paths are exposed. The crate doc promises that allocations are "capped by raw::MAX_SAMPLES and by the amount of data present". This path breaks that promise.

reference/raw.rs has the same gap. That module is test-only.

Use the requested scale when decoding sequence frames.

ImageSequenceSource::decode does not pass FrameRequest::scale to decode_frame, so proxy-size requests decode and cache the full-resolution DNG frame. Pass the requested scale through the sequence loader so reduced-resolution DNG development is used.

Update the CinemaDNG / DNG row: this PR adds lossy JPEG DNG and opcode lists.

The row says the decoder has "no lossy / JPEG XL DNG, MXF-wrapped CinemaDNG, opcode lists or Raw settings UI". This PR adds two of these items:

  • Lossy JPEG DNG for 8-bit LinearRaw. lossy_jpeg in crates/dng/src/raw.rs implements it.
  • Opcode lists 1–3, opt-in through ProcessOptions::apply_opcodes.

The same stale statement appears in two other places:

  • docs/gaps.md Lines 168-169 lists "lossy / JPEG XL DNG, … opcode lists" under Missing.
  • docs/architecture.md Line 55 lists only "uncompressed and lossless JPEG raw data".

Update all three. For lossy DNG and opcodes, record the remaining limits: only 8-bit LinearRaw is lossy, opcodes are off by default, and some opcode cases are not implemented. JPEG XL DNG, MXF-wrapped CinemaDNG and the Raw settings UI stay missing.

Add a monochrome case to the reduced-resolution test, or fix the comment.

The comment on Line 186 says "LinearRaw and monochrome reduce too". The code tests only the three-sample LinearRaw path. The PR says the reduced-size path also block-averages monochrome images, but no test covers that path. A regression there would not be detected.

♻️ Proposed monochrome case
     assert!((img.rgba[0] - 500.0 / 4095.0).abs() < 1e-6);
+    let mono: Vec<u16> = vec![800; w * h];
+    let o = Options { width: w, height: h, bits: 12, cfa: None, ..Default::default() };
+    let img = filmcraft_dng::decode_with(&write(&mono, &o), &ProcessOptions { target_size: Some((10, 10)), ..Default::default() }).unwrap();
+    assert_eq!((img.width, img.height), (16, 10));
+    assert!((img.rgba[0] - 800.0 / 4095.0).abs() < 1e-6);
 }

The expected 16×10 size follows the factor-4 reduction that the LinearRaw case already asserts. The expected value for a mono image assumes no colour transform is applied. Adjust it if the mono output path differs.

Gate process::develop on the opcode opt-in.

process::develop has no options parameter. It calls develop_with with ProcessOptions::default(), so apply_opcodes cannot be turned on through this path. develop_with still reads p.opcodes.list2 and p.opcodes.list3 directly. When a caller passes Dng::params() into process::develop, OpcodeList2 and OpcodeList3 are applied even though opcode processing is documented as off by default. A malformed list also fails this path, because params() now parses the lists and opcode::apply errors propagate with ?.

Do not change params() to params_with(false). reference/mod.rs calls self.params() and then passes the caller's options to process::develop_with. That change would silently drop the opcode lists on that path even when apply_opcodes is set.

Instead, have process::develop_with use the opcode lists only when o.apply_opcodes is true. Dng::develop_with already sets this flag when it calls params_with, so that path keeps its current behavior.

Merged current main: conflicts in the lossless JPEG decoder, the DNG writer and the roundtrip tests. Kept the faster per-line decoder together with main's ScanParams, and moved the lossy JPEG writer and the tests onto main's Lj92Params; the filmcraft-dng tests pass.

Reject unsupported sample counts before JPEG encoding.

If samples_per_pixel is two or four, lossy_jpeg selects L8 but passes two or four samples per pixel. The resolved image JPEG encoder panics on that buffer-length mismatch. The is_err() check cannot catch the panic. Validate the supported sample counts at the writer boundary and return an error instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not turn a JPEG encoding error into an empty chunk.

If JPEG encoding returns an error, put_chunks still records the empty result as a chunk with byte count zero. For example, a tile width of 65,536 exceeds the encoder’s JPEG dimension limit even when the image itself is smaller. write then returns a DNG with no JPEG data for that tile. Propagate the encoding error instead of returning an empty vector. (docs.rs)

Reject incompatible lossy-JPEG options in write.

write emits lossy-JPEG DNGs with the raw IFD settings from Options. The defaults are 16-bit samples with a CFA pattern. raw.rs::layout rejects lossy JPEG DNGs whose samples are not 8-bit, so a default Options with Compression::LossyJpeg produces a file that this reader refuses to open. Validate the combination in write before writing the raw IFD. The check should require 8-bit samples and LinearRaw layout for LossyJpeg. The lossy test helper already sets bits: 8 and cfa: None for this reason.

Follow-up: main now denies clippy::too_many_arguments, so the CI gate failed on full() and a test helper; both now take their parameters as a tuple/array. No behaviour change, filmcraft-dng tests and clippy are clean.

Merged current main into this branch. One conflict in crates/dng/src/raw.rs: the truncation checks now combine main's rounding-up (div_ceil) with this PR's per-compression bytes-per-sample divisor. fmt, clippy (-D warnings) and tests of filmcraft-dng pass locally; waiting for CI.
