Spelling on the shared engine, with a Spelling panel and right-click suggestions - #2286
Moves DesignCraft's spelling onto the suite's shared engine and adds a real interface for it. On main, Check Spelling… runs a query and shows nothing.
Spelling panel:Edit › Spelling › Check Spelling… opens a docked panel beside the page, with the word selected in the text and scrolled into view. Change to starts with the best suggestion; click another or type a replacement, then Change or Enter corrects the word. Double-clicking a suggestion does both. A long list of suggestions scrolls inside itself. Ignore Once, Ignore All and Add to Dictionary are buttons beneath it, and they keep their place from one issue to the next and stay in view when the panel is short. The document stays editable, and changed text or styles ask for a new pass rather than applying old results.
Underlines on the page: while the panel shows, every issue left in the pass is underlined, red for spelling and blue for preferred forms, even with Dynamic Spelling off. That includes the selected word. Ignored words lose their underline, and Dynamic Spelling itself stays off by default.
Right-click suggestions on a misspelled word.
Shared engine: spelling moves to craft-proof, so each run of text is checked in its own language with whatever dictionary it has. Khmer gets spelling and preferred forms with its optional data, and builds without that data say the text was not checked. No build has that data yet:Add shared Khmer word breaking and proofreading craft-libs#551 refuses CRAFT_KHMER_DIR until maintainers sign off on its licence classification, so Khmer shows as not checked until then. The screenshot came from a build with the pack, before embedding was disabled. English grammar rules stay off, so nobody gains new marks they didn't ask for. [No Language] text isn't checked.
Dynamic Spelling proofs a story again only when its text, styles or the user dictionary change, instead of on every revision.
English results: without CRAFT_I18N_DIR the word list falls back to craft-proof's built-in Moby list, the same source as today, or an installed Hunspell dictionary if there is one. A build with Language data gets SCOWL, so some words will be flagged differently. Wiring that into CI and releases is left for a separate change.
Validation: reproducing CI locally on Linux (Docker, Debian arm64, CI's apt packages and craft-fonts pin), all 3,908 workspace tests pass without the Khmer data. On macOS with the Khmer data, 3,890 pass and 12 UI tests fail, all among the 13 that fail on untouched main; formatting, Clippy, translation reporting, doctests, assets, layering and the WASM check pass. At the current head on macOS without the Khmer data, after the repin to #551's 0b478944: 3,905 tests pass and 13 UI tests fail, the same 13 recorded on main, and those same checks pass; Linux wasn't re-run. GitHub CI hasn't run yet. I also checked the panel in the running app with a Khmer document, from the first issue through a preferred form to the end of the pass, in the Light and High Contrast themes, and in the Arabic interface. Scrolling to an off-screen word and the right-click fixes are covered by tests, not by hand.
Known limits: text in tables, footnotes and endnotes isn't checked, as on main; the panel says so in a document that has any. Generated text (a table of contents, an index, the endnote list) is left out of the review, as a correction there wouldn't last. Corrections aren't marked by Track Changes, the same as Find/Change. Each Change checks the whole document twice; a 237-page book took 0.45 s to import and check once in a development build.
Not translated yet: Suggestions, Ignore Once, Ignore All and the count of issues left show in English until they're in the catalogs. Windows hasn't been run.
Includes #2289: the review selects the word, and selected Khmer lost its marks without that fix, so this branch merges it. Those three files leave this diff once it lands.
Merge order: this depends on storytold/craft-libs#592 (the panel) and storytold/craft-libs#551 (craft-proof's Khmer support) and pins their current heads, so merge those first and update the pins here. It stands apart from #2238 and either can merge first. Details: docs/spelling.md.
Based on Khmer work by @sungkhum, SBBIC founder and contributor to Khmer word-breaking work with the Unicode Consortium.
Added a Spelling panel with language-aware checks, suggested corrections, and options to ignore words or add them to the dictionary.
Right-click misspelled words for suggestions and correction options. Spelling marks appear during review or when Dynamic Spelling is enabled; edits to a story update its results.
Expanded spelling checks to languages with available dictionaries or language packs, plus Khmer when optional data is available.
Bug Fixes
Improved text selection highlighting for right-to-left text and mixed-direction passages.
Documentation
Added guidance on spelling workflows, supported languages, Khmer data availability, and current limitations.
Spelling moves to craft-proof, so each run of text is checked in its own
language with whatever dictionary it has, and Khmer gets spelling and preferred
forms with its optional data. English grammar rules stay off. The review is the
shared craft-proof-ui: a docked Spelling panel that keeps the document editable,
and suggestions in the right-click menu on a misspelled word. Dynamic Spelling
proofs a story again only when its text, styles or the user dictionary change.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change replaces English-only spelling checks with shared language-aware proofing and adds optional Khmer support. It adds a Spelling panel, review actions, and context-menu suggestions. It also updates spelling overlays, cluster selection, language mapping, tests, documentation, and attribution.

Summary
Shared proofing engine and language support Cargo.toml, crates/engine/..., crates/doc/src/attrs/..., crates/ui-egui/src/panels/properties/text.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/theme.rs
Spelling checks now use shared proofing results, language spans, structured findings, dictionary status, suggestions, and caret lookup. Khmer language labels map to km, and the language list includes Khmer. Tests cover language boundaries, preferred forms, corrections, and unavailable data.
The application stores spelling review state and connects panel actions, context-menu suggestions, and UI commands to spelling operations. Tests cover review actions, context menus, and review state.
Selection, spelling overlays, and canvas navigation crates/compose/..., crates/ui-egui/src/canvas/...
Selection and spelling marks use cluster-aware glyph selection. Dynamic spelling results are cached per story, and the canvas can reveal selected text.
Documentation, attribution, and progress records ASSETS.md, NOTICE, ROADMAP.md, docs/...
Documentation and notices describe proofing coverage, optional Khmer data, provenance, and licensing. Progress and parity documents record the spelling changes.

Explanation
The title "Spelling on the shared engine, with a Spelling panel and right-click suggestions" matches the main change. The changeset moves spelling to the shared craft-proof engine (crates/engine/src/cmd/spelling.rs, Cargo.toml). It adds a Spelling panel (crates/ui-egui/src/panels/spelling.rs, dock.rs) and right-click suggestions (menus/context.rs, panels/spelling.rs context_items). The title is specific and concise. It omits Khmer support and dynamic spelling, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

…strings
Issues in a language from a pack or an installed dictionary had an empty
language: only `tag()` names those. The Spelling panel's strings now count
in the interface translation checks.

Selected text is a black band with the glyphs redrawn inverted, but only a
cluster's first glyph has a length, so subscripts and marks stayed black and
vanished: Khmer, Devanagari and other complex scripts lost them while selected.
In right-to-left text a cluster can start with a zero-width mark, so the band
missed the base letter too. Now the whole cluster is redrawn, and selected text is
one band unless other text lies between.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…hile it shows
The shared panel now has Change, Ignore Once, Ignore All and Add to Dictionary as
buttons and a Change to field, and keeps those in view itself, so the dock leaves its
scrolling to it. While the panel shows, what is left of the pass is underlined on the
page, over the selection, red for spelling and blue for preferred forms, whatever
Dynamic Spelling is set to. Squiggles span whole clusters.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The shared list now scrolls inside itself, so the panel only needs room for six
suggestions under a one-line sentence, without a gap above the actions.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ollow their word
From a production review. A right-click in a table cell looked up the frame's story
at the cell's offset, and could change an unrelated word: it offers nothing there
now, or in a longer selection, or off the text. spelling.change keeps the selection
with the text, as a stale one could end mid-character. Added words hold for
non-ASCII capitals and either apostrophe, as before the move to craft-proof.
Generated text is left out of the review, as corrections there don't last. The
review scrolls to a word off screen, a second Check Spelling no longer closes the
panel, and the underlines only do work for frames on screen. The panel says when
tables and notes went unchecked. Pins craft-proof to storytold#551's current head.

AI-generated review (Opus). Not a maintainer decision.
Changes needed:
This replaces the query-only Check Spelling with a review panel, underlines, right-click suggestions and per-language proofing through the shared crates. The panel and engine work is careful, but the change covers several separate topics and depends on shared crates that are not yet published.
crates/ui-egui/src/canvas/view.rs:238: setting v.fitted = false makes the canvas refit the spread on the next frame. That replaces the origin and zoom just set to reveal the word, and note_jump(app, true) records nothing because page_in_view needs a fitted view. Drop the assignment.
Cargo.toml: craft-khmer and craft-proof-ui are pinned to craft-libs revisions that are not on its main branch, and craft-proof-ui uses a different revision from craft-proof. Pin all three to one published revision.
crates/compose/src/lib.rs:5626-5700: the cluster-aware selected_glyphs and the new RTL band merging change how every text selection is drawn. This is its own fix and would be easier to check in a separate PR.
Khmer support (the language tag, the LANGUAGES entry, the font fallback test, NOTICE/ASSETS and the optional data) could also be its own change, separate from moving spelling to the shared engine.
crates/ui-egui/src/canvas/text_overlay.rs: the new dynamic-spelling cache, keyed on weak pointers to the story and styles plus the user words, is a separate performance change and could stand alone too.
crates/ui-egui/src/panels/spelling.rs:200-214: the right-click section offers suggestions, Add to Dictionary and Check Spelling…, but not Ignore All, which is expected beside suggestions on a flagged word.
Recommendation: update the pull request; it will be reviewed again.

craft-libs#551's head disables embedding the Khmer data until maintainers classify it, so a build with CRAFT_KHMER_DIR now fails. The docs, NOTICE and ASSETS say so.

Marking the view unfitted made the next frame refit the spread, losing the scroll and the zoom, and kept Go Back from recording the destination. The Khmer and panel doc links now name commits, since those paths aren't on craft-libs main yet.

Revalidate the captured issue before Change and AddToDictionary.
The second window edits the shared document while the first window's context menu remains open. The menu then sends its captured range or word without freshness validation. spelling.change can replace unrelated current text, and spelling.addWord can persist a stale word in user_words.

Invalidate the active review when a style definition changes.
A style-language edit changes d.styles but leaves the review's identity_epoch and story version unchanged. review_marks therefore continues to draw findings computed under the previous language. The shared panel also leaves its correction controls enabled because its freshness checks see no document or story change.
Make the review freshness token change when a style edit changes the document styles. The existing fresh-check validation can reject a correction when the finding disappears, but it does not prevent stale marks from remaining visible or prevent the controls from appearing actionable.

Styles give a story its language, so a review's marks and corrections could outlive the language they were checked in. The review's version now follows the styles too. Also removes an unused variable from the scroll test.

I also checked the panel in the running app with a Khmer document, from the first issue through a preferred form to the end of the pass, in the Light and High Contrast themes, and in the Arabic interface. Scrolling to an off-screen word and the right-click fixes are covered by tests, not by hand.Known limits: text in tables, footnotes and endnotes isn't checked, as on
main; the panel says so in a document that has any.
Merge order: this depends on storytold/craft-libs#592 (the panel) and storytold/craft-libs#551 (
craft-proof's Khmer support) and pins their current heads, so merge those first and update the pins here. It stands apart from #2238 and either can merge first. Details: docs/spelling.md.Based on Khmer work by @sungkhum, SBBIC founder and contributor to Khmer word-breaking work with the Unicode Consortium.
