Khmer wrapping and industry-standard justification - #2238
Adds Khmer wrapping and justification using the same shared Aksara-derived engine proposed in storytold/wordcraft#5357. Unspaced text gets word boundaries, including unknown/misspelled words; authored zero-width spaces, word joiners and No Break formatting are respected without changing document text.
Wrapping: both composers break at safe Khmer word boundaries and keep marks attached. Required subscript shaping survives imported Ligatures Off/tracking settings, including legacy AAT fonts.
Justification follows the industry standard: word boundaries only permit a break and never open a gap. Real word spaces take the length, past Word Spacing's maximum when needed. Glyph Scaling applies within its limits, with marks scaled along with their base. A line without a real space keeps its natural width until the author adds one, shrinking only to Glyph Scaling's minimum if it is too wide. Other scripts compose as before.
Word count: the Story Editor counts Khmer by its word boundaries, not real spaces; other text counts as before.
Scope: proofreading moved to #2286, on the suite's shared engine and a shared spelling panel. This pins craft-khmer from storytold/craft-libs#551 with its reviewed refinement limit and carries the SBBIC, SIL NRSI and SEAlang MIT notices; SBBIC confirmed the tagger was trained on internal documents it has permission to train with, which are not distributed. As with CJK, End at an unspaced wrap draws the caret at the next line's start (limits).
Validation: a local corpus of 3,331 real, professionally typeset book passages, across both composers, two widths, authored zero-width spaces retained/removed and two Justification settings (565,353 lines): no unsafe breaks, widened Khmer glyphs or moved marks, and scaling stayed in limits. 345,681 of 345,689 interior lines with a real space fill the measure; the other eight overrun at an authored forced break. Lines without a real space stay natural by design. Matched reference PDF passages were compared visually; differing editions/fonts prevent exact pagination claims. Private files are not included.
Tests: reproducing CI locally on Linux (Docker, Debian arm64, CI's apt packages and craft-fonts pin), all workspace tests passed before proofreading moved out, and the composition, engine and UI suites also passed with the Khmer pack. Formatting, Clippy, doctests, assets, layering, translation reporting and the 16-crate WASM check pass on macOS, and a Windows MSVC cargo check passes. On macOS without craft-fonts, 13 UI tests fail, exactly the same 13 as untouched main (f3e35af8). At the current head on macOS, without the Khmer data: 3,886 tests pass and 13 UI tests fail, the same 13 recorded on main, and those same checks pass; Linux wasn't re-run after the repin. GitHub CI is awaiting workflow approval; Windows runtime has not been run.
Thanks to @visarutforthaipbs for #516, whose attached-glyph reasoning informed this; its broader Thai/Lao/Myanmar work remains valuable. Existing installed-font fallback (#504) is reused.
Khmer data: builds don't contain it yet. storytold/craft-libs#551 now refuses CRAFT_KHMER_DIR until maintainers sign off on the data's licence classification, so until then only real and authored zero-width spaces separate Khmer words, and unspaced text wraps by word only after that approval. The corpus results and images here came from builds with the pack, before embedding was disabled; since then only craft-khmer's build check and licence text have changed.
Depends on storytold/craft-libs#551 (pinned to its current head, 0b478944; the pin needs updating when #551 merges) and the optional verified data staging in storytold/craft-i18n#122. Compressed resources total 714,343 bytes; release data wiring and Windows runtime acceptance remain pending. Build instructions and limits: docs/khmer.md.

Here is a before/after example of Khmer support in use. Both are actual DesignCraft exports of the same text, font and column widths.
Before Khmer integration — justification can separate letters and their attached marks.
With the shared Khmer engine and app integration — wrapping uses Khmer word boundaries. Justification follows the industry standard: a word boundary never opens a gap, real spaces take the length, and Glyph Scaling (here 96/100/104%) applies within its limits. A line without a real space keeps its natural width (center); the author adds a real space where one belongs to justify it (right).
This demonstrates this PR’s app integration with the shared engine from craft-libs #551. The font is Content Enhanced Regular, 18 pt, with ligatures enabled in both builds. Reproduction details and script. No private book pages or font files are included.
Khmer word boundaries, modelled or authored as U+200B, now only permit a
line break and never open a gap. Real word spaces take the length, past
Word Spacing's maximum when needed, and Glyph Scaling applies to Khmer
within its limits with attached marks scaled along with their base. A
line without a real word space keeps its natural width, shrinking only
down to Glyph Scaling's minimum when it is too wide to fit.
Other scripts compose exactly as before. The new regressions use a
synthetic font and authored boundaries, so they run without the data
pack or a Khmer font.

Pin craft-khmer to the reviewed craft-libs storytold#551 head, which bounds
refinement work per paragraph. Carry the SIL NRSI and SEAlang MIT notices
alongside SBBIC's. Dynamic Spelling proofs a story again only when its
text, styles or the user dictionary change, instead of every story on
every edit, and no longer accumulates a cache entry per revision. The
spelling review no longer copies a book's findings on every frame.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Remove the duplicated Khmer code point ranges from the UI.
This line repeats the ranges U+1780..=U+17FF and U+19E0..=U+19FF. crates/engine/src/cmd/spelling/khmer.rs (Lines 7-9) defines the same ranges in character. designcraft_compose::khmer::character is a third copy. If one copy changes, khmerPresent and khmerUnchecked can disagree with what the engine proofs. The dialog can then show a wrong "Khmer data is not included" notice, or omit it.
The UI should ask the engine, not classify characters itself. Expose one engine helper and call it here. Reuse that helper in khmer::character.
♻️ Proposed change
- let has_khmer = st.doc.stories.values().any(|s| s.text.chars().any(|c| matches!(c, '\u{1780}'..='\u{17ff}' | '\u{19e0}'..='\u{19ff}')));+ let has_khmer = st.doc.stories.values().any(|s| designcraft_engine::cmd::spelling::has_khmer(&s.text));
Add this to crates/engine/src/cmd/spelling.rs:
/// True when `text` holds a Khmer character, by the same rule the proofing uses.pubfnhas_khmer(text:&str) -> bool{
text.chars().any(khmer::character)}
Based on learnings: "The UI is thin: panels read engine state and act through app.run(id, params)."

The spelling review, proofing and composition each spelled out the Khmer
ranges, so the review's "Khmer data is not included" notice could disagree
with what is proofed. They now share composition's definition, through an
engine helper for the UI. SBBIC confirmed the tagger's training documents.

Return a shared Arc from the spelling cache to avoid per-frame clones.
ctx.data(|d| d.get_temp(key)) returns an owned clone of the stored DynamicSpelling. That clone copies user_words, a Vec<String>, on every lookup. draw_dynamic_spelling calls dynamic_misspellings for each story on every draw, including stories with no misspellings. A cache hit therefore allocates one String per user word, per story, per frame.
Store the entry as Arc<DynamicSpelling>. The lookup then clones only the Arc. The pointer checks and the user_words comparison keep the same invalidation behavior, and the comparison does not allocate.

Update the DynamicSpelling cache lookup to retrieve a shared
Arc<DynamicSpelling> and store new entries wrapped in an Arc, so cache hits
avoid cloning user_words. Preserve the existing story, styles, and user_words
invalidation checks, and return a clone of the cached bad Arc on hits.
Unspaced Khmer read as one word because the count split on whitespace. It
now uses the shared word spans, with the same rules as WordCraft, and keeps
whitespace counting for other text. Real spaces still only drive
justification.

A Dynamic Spelling cache hit no longer copies the user dictionary on every
frame. The Khmer build steps state their working directory and include
PowerShell. Khmer docs describe the justification behavior as the industry
standard.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Avoid a full dictionary comparison for every story on each draw.
On each cache hit, dynamic_misspellings compares the full doc.user_words against the copy stored in that story's entry. draw_dynamic_spelling runs this check for every story in doc.stories, not only visible ones. The cost therefore scales with the number of stories times the dictionary size. Each entry also stores its own copy of the dictionary, so memory scales the same way. The copy occurs only when an entry is recomputed, not on every frame.
A document-level revision or shared snapshot would remove the repeated comparison. doc.user_words is a plain public Vec<String> that is mutated directly, so this change needs a revision update at each mutation site or a type change. The inspected code does not establish a small localized edit, so no patch is proposed.
Entries created by insert_temp are not removed by this code. Data for closed documents can therefore remain in egui temporary storage.
