feat(codecs): centralize pure-Rust video codecs into craft-libs - #504
This pull request brings pure-Rust video codecs and test infrastructure into craft-libs:
Video Codecs:
craft-h264enc: Clean-room H.264/AVC baseline, main, high profile video encoder with CABAC/CAVLC rate control. Depends on craft-media (with bitstream feature).
craft-prores: Clean-room Apple ProRes Proxy, LT, Standard, HQ, 4444 encoder and decoder (SMPTE RDD 36). Depends on craft-media (with bitstream feature).
craft-hevcenc: Pure-Rust HEVC (H.265) video encoder with CABAC and rate control.
craft-av1enc: Pure-Rust AV1 video encoder with normative spec tables and symbol coding.
craft-vp9enc: Pure-Rust VP9 video encoder.
craft-vp8: Clean-room pure-Rust VP8 video decoder (RFC 6386) with hostile-input fuzzing.
craft-dnx: Avid DNxHD / DNxHR encoder and decoder (SMPTE ST 2019-1:2016).
Test Infrastructure & Umbrella:
craft-testkit: Shared test harness providing ffmpeg discovery, oracle execution, progress reporting, and deadline timeout enforcement (with_deadline).
craft-codecs: Umbrella crate re-exporting the video codec crates (h264, prores, dnx, hevc, av1, vp9, vp8) behind feature flags.
Dedicated CI Workflows:
Added individual GitHub Actions workflows for each crate (h264enc, prores, hevcenc, av1enc, vp9enc, vp8, dnx, testkit, codecs) testing formatting, clippy, unit tests, and wasm32 compilation.
Audio Scope Resolution
Removed duplicate audio crates (craft-aac, craft-opus, craft-audio-io) and the symphonia workspace dependency to avoid overlap and conflicting ownership with the active #441–#448 audio series by @alehel. Audio codec/IO support is cleanly owned by the #441–#448 stack.
Addressed Review Feedback
Timeout enforcement: Updated craft_testkit::with_deadline to execute test functions in worker threads and enforce deadlines via receiver timeout, respecting CRAFT_TEST_TIMEOUT_SECS and FILMCRAFT_HOSTILE_TIMEOUT_SECS.
Exact encoder matching:ffmpeg_has_encoder now matches exact encoder names rather than substrings.
Removed wrapper crate: Dropped craft-bitstream in favor of direct usage of craft-media with features = ["bitstream"].
Reverted unrelated changes: Reverted modifications to .gitignore and crates/fonts-build/src/tests.rs to match main exactly.
Spec Provenance: Clarified license and normative spec origins for AV1 tables and CDFs.
cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: Passes with zero warnings/errors.
cargo test -p <each-codec-crate> --locked: All unit, integration, doc, and hostile fuzz tests pass.
cargo check -p <each-codec-crate> --target wasm32-unknown-unknown: Clean build for all crates.
All crates adhere to #![deny(clippy::unwrap_used, clippy::expect_used, clippy::panic, clippy::unimplemented, clippy::todo, clippy::unreachable)] and forbid unsafe_code.

The pull request adds standalone Rust crates for audio and video codecs, audio file I/O, shared bitstream operations, and test utilities. It also adds an umbrella crate with feature-gated codec exports and integrates the new crates into workspace dependencies.
Changes: Codec workspace and shared APIs
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Workspace and codec facade Cargo.toml, crates/codecs/*, crates/bitstream/*
The workspace adds codec, audio I/O, testkit, Symphonia, and logging dependencies. The craft-codecs crate provides feature-gated exports for the codec crates. The bitstream crate re-exports the media bitstream API.
Shared test infrastructure crates/testkit/*, crates/fonts-build/src/tests.rs
The testkit adds tool discovery, fixture handling, deadline helpers, and skip/progress reporting. The non-UTF-8-path test now returns early if directory creation fails.
Audio I/O crates/audio-io/*
The new crate adds planar audio buffers, format detection and metadata APIs, PCM conversion, WAV/AIFF/FLAC readers and writers, container size checks, Symphonia-backed decoding, and multi-resolution sample peaks.
AAC codec crates/aac/*
The new crate adds AAC-LC configuration and ADTS handling, Huffman and ICS parsing, transforms, TNS, psychoacoustic analysis, quantisation, and encoder and decoder APIs. The decoder reports SBR signaling but does not reconstruct SBR high bands.
Video encoders and ProRes crates/{av1enc,h264enc,hevcenc,prores,vp9enc}/*
The new crates add encoder APIs and implementations for AV1, H.264, HEVC, and VP9, plus ProRes encoding and decoding. They include bitstream syntax, prediction, transforms, filtering, rate control, and reconstruction paths.
VP8 and DNx codecs crates/{vp8,dnx}/*
The new crates add a VP8 decoder and DNxHD/DNxHR decoder and encoder. They include codec tables, frame and header parsing, reconstruction, and supporting tests and examples.
Hostile-input tests can still hang after their deadline, and configured timeouts can fail the test suite. These should be addressed before merging.

open calls bytes.to_vec(), which copies the full input for every Symphonia probe and decode. probe can call open twice: once at Line 615, and again through run at Line 627. Each call makes a new copy.
For a large FLAC, CAF, or MP4 file, peak memory then holds the input twice, plus the decoded planes. The decoded planes can reach MAX_DECODE_SAMPLES (4 GiB).
audio_sync_at at Line 225 already builds a MediaSourceStream from a borrowed Cursor<&[u8]>. This shows that Symphonia 0.6 accepts a borrowed source. To use it here, give Opened and open a lifetime tied to bytes and pass Cursor::new(bytes). Then confirm that get_probe().probe returns a reader with that lifetime, not 'static.

Review comment at @crates/audio-io/src/symph.rs at line 358:
Update `open` to build the Symphonia source from a borrowed cursor over `bytes`,
avoiding a full input copy, and carry that borrow through `Opened` and the
probed reader. Confirm `get_probe().probe` supports the resulting lifetime;
preserve the existing probing and decoding behavior without introducing an owned
copy.
Replace the assert! calls in the tile writer with a reported error.
Replace the assert! calls in the tile writer with a reported error.
The tile writer calls assert! at Line 194, Line 211 and Line 306, and assert_eq! at Line 587. These calls depend on invariants that decide.rs must uphold: a block that crosses the frame edge is split, no 64x64 block is non-skip, and DCT_DCT is used when set == 0 or qidx == 0. The workspace lint clippy::panic does not flag assert! or assert_eq!. These panics therefore pass the "Never crash" lint set. If a future Decider change breaks one of these invariants, the encoder aborts the host process. The PR objective is zero panics.
Return a Result from TileWriter::superblock/finish and propagate it through encode_frame. If the invariants are proven to hold, use debug_assert! instead. Then document the guarantee next to the decider code. Based on learnings: "Never crash. Every crate's lib.rs starts with #![deny(clippy::unwrap_used, clippy::expect_used, clippy::panic, ...)]."

Review comment at @crates/av1enc/src/writer.rs at line 194:
Replace the tile-writer assertions in TileWriter::superblock and finish,
including the checks for frame-edge splitting, 64x64 non-skip blocks, and
DCT_DCT selection, with recoverable reported errors; return and propagate Result
through encode_frame so invariant violations do not panic. Use debug assertions
only if the corresponding guarantees are established in the decider code and
documented there.

All CodeRabbit review comments have been resolved in commit e7ab7e0:
crates/aac: Updated crate names and test commands to craft-aac, removed references to offline tooling, and bounds-checked AudioSpecificConfig::lc sampling rate lookups.
crates/audio-io: Clarified Float32 non-clamping documentation, and eliminated intermediate input vector copies in Symphonia open using borrowed Cursor.
crates/av1enc: Replaced assert! in tile writer with debug_assert!, validated input frames with typed Error::InvalidFrame, made Encoder::encode return Result<Packet, Error>, and updated README.
crates/h264enc: Validated Pass::Second statistics, added levels 6.0 and 6.1 to LEVELS, and updated README examples.
crates/hevcenc: Validated input planes with recoverable Error::InvalidFrame, made Encoder::encode return Result<Packet, Error>, and updated test descriptions.
crates/prores: Validated slice count against u16::MAX capacity in picture header, and updated crate names in README.
crates/vp9enc: Fixed carry adjustment in boolean encoder with regression test, bound rgba_to_yuv420 reads, and updated README title.
All 105 tests across the 9 centralized crates pass cleanly.
Reject explicit zero sampling frequencies during ASC parsing.
read_rate accepts an escaped sampling frequency of 0. AudioSpecificConfig::parse and Decoder::from_config do not reject it, so Decoder::new can accept the stream and Decoder::sample_rate() reports 0. Zero is not a valid AAC sampling frequency.

Update read_rate so an escaped sampling frequency of zero is rejected with
Error::InvalidConfig before it can be accepted by AudioSpecificConfig::parse or
Decoder::from_config; preserve existing handling of valid escaped rates and
reserved indices.
Reject configurations that exceed H.264 level 6.2.
330-339: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject configurations that exceed H.264 level 6.2.
Encoder::new accepts dimensions up to 16384 in each direction. For example, 16384×16384 produces 1024×1024 macroblocks, which exceeds level 6.2's MaxFS of 139264. pick_level then falls through and returns 62, and the constructor writes that value into the SPS. The resulting bitstream signals level 6.2 while violating its PicWidthInMbs * FrameHeightInMbs limit. Level-constrained decoders can reject this stream.

Review comment at @crates/h264enc/src/nal.rs around lines 330 - 339:
Update pick_level to represent when no supported H.264 level matches instead of
falling back to level 6.2, and update Encoder::new to reject that result as an
invalid configuration. Preserve the existing level selection for configurations
that fit within a supported level.
All reviews and findings from CodeRabbit have been addressed, and merge conflicts with main have been resolved:
Review Fixes
crates/aac:
Made AudioSpecificConfig::lc fallible returning Result<AudioSpecificConfig>, rejecting sampling frequency indices not present in SAMPLE_RATES with Error::InvalidConfig rather than defaulting to 0. Propagated through encoder and AdtsHeader::to_asc.
Updated read_rate and AudioSpecificConfig::parse to explicitly reject an escaped sampling frequency of 0 with Error::InvalidConfig.
Added unit test invalid_sampling_frequency covering reserved indices and escaped 0 Hz.
crates/h264enc:
Corrected README documentation at line 30 to reference Error::BadFrame instead of Error::InvalidFrame.
Removed outdated reference to nonexistent development example h264enc_synth from the README.
Updated PassStats::from_text and Encoder::new to validate and reject non-finite and non-positive qscale and fps values. Added unit test pass_stats_from_text_rejects_invalid_values.
Updated nal::pick_level to return Option<u8>, returning None instead of falling back to level 6.2 when configuration exceeds limits. Encoder::new now returns Error::InvalidConfig if level limits are exceeded. Added unit test pick_level_bounds.
Cleaned up collapsible if in two-pass configuration check.
Linting & Workspace Standards:
Conformed crate-level attributes in codec crates to start with #![deny(clippy::unwrap_used, clippy::expect_used, clippy::panic, clippy::unimplemented, clippy::todo, clippy::unreachable)] per AGENTS.md.
Added targeted allow attributes for multi-dimensional coordinate loops (clippy::needless_range_loop) across codec modules.
Passed cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, and all codec unit and doctests.
Conflict Resolution
Merged latest main (incorporating craft-pcraft-format, craft-vectorcraft-format, and craft-ecproj-format) and cleanly resolved Cargo.lock. PR status is now clean and mergeable.

Remove the unused filmcraft-bitstream dependency from craft-dnx.
No source, test, example, bench, or build script under crates/dnx references filmcraft_bitstream or craft_bitstream. The declaration only adds a build-time dependency that the crate does not use. Remove it, and remove the matching entry from the dependency list in crates/dnx/README.md:6.

Head 8776bb4. No CI has run on it yet: the fork workflows are waiting for approval. Even once they run, none of them would build these crates (point 3 below). I ran these locally:
cargo test --all-features for each new crate: passes.
I also ran a mutation fuzz of my own on the AAC and ProRes decoders, 30k inputs per configuration, with no panics.
Why Request changes
The description claims work that hasn't landed.
"Unifies with craft-media-testkit from #439": it doesn't. craft-testkit is a second testkit with a different API (ffmpeg_or_skip, fixtures_dir, with_deadline); neither testkit depends on the other.
"#439's CodecParams, ByteSource and track.codec_params() feed directly into our codec decoders": no new crate uses any type from #439.
craft-bitstream is only pub use craft_media::bitstream::*, the bit I/O main already has. Callers import it under the alias filmcraft-bitstream.
crates/testkit/src/lib.rs:88: with_deadline(_secs, f) ignores its timeout. The vp8 (tests/fuzz_hostile.rs:99) and dnx (tests/it/fuzz_hostile.rs:68) tests rely on it for hang detection, so that detection never fires: a decoder hang hangs the whole test run. Nothing reads the documented FILMCRAFT_HOSTILE_TIMEOUT_SECS either.
No CI for about 50k lines of new code. Every workflow is per crate (-p craft-<x>) and this PR adds none, so none of the 13 crates is linted, tested or fuzzed in CI. "clippy/test --workspace passes" can only ever be checked locally.
The audio code is duplicated with the open #441–#445 stack.
crates/aac is close to #443/#444's crates/audio/src/aac/*: huffman_tables.rs differs by 2 lines, decoder.rs by 84 of 618.
crates/opus matches #445: range.rs and silk/tables.rs are byte-identical.
crates/audio-io duplicates #441's WAV/AIFF/peaks code: same functions (check_info, fmt_used, only_chunks_follow) and peaks.rs within 30 lines.
So the description's split (craft-audio keeps WAV/AIFF/FLAC) doesn't match the code. One owner and one copy, please: agree with the #441–#448 author which side keeps the audio code.
Please split
This bundles 13 crates and unrelated changes:
crates/fonts-build/src/tests.rs:126: the test now returns early, and passes, on any create_dir_all error, not only on APFS, and without a message.
.gitignore: adds a duplicate /target, and /vendor/*target/ looks like a typo for /vendor/*/target.
Suggested split: one PR per video codec crate, each with its own workflow, and the audio crates resolved against #441–#448. Drop craft-bitstream in favour of craft-media with the bitstream feature.
Non-blocking
crates/aac/src/huffman_tables.rs:4 says the tables were "derived by black-box probing of an external decoder", and commit 7145cfa deleted the scripts that did it, so the tables can no longer be regenerated. Please source them from ISO/IEC 14496-3, or keep the scripts.
av1enctables.rs:1 and cdf.rs:2 are "mirrored from filmcraft-av1's spec_tables.rs". That file isn't in this repo; please confirm its licence.
symphonia (MPL-2.0) becomes a workspace dependency. Please check that against the licensing policy.
The aac and prores crates have no hostile-input tests; vp8, dnx and opus do.
The dnx fuzz picks its inputs by UTC day, so what it covers changes from day to day.
Not reviewed: the h264, hevc, av1 and vp9 encoders; the Opus CELT/SILK internals; the dnx decode source.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
…tes, add CI workflows
- Focus PR storytold#504 purely on pure-Rust video codecs (H.264, ProRes, HEVC, AV1, VP9, VP8, DNxHD/HR), craft-testkit, and craft-codecs.
- Remove duplicate audio crates (craft-aac, craft-audio-io, craft-opus) and symphonia dependency in favor of the storytold#441–storytold#448 audio series.
- Drop craft-bitstream wrapper; point craft-h264enc and craft-prores directly at craft-media with feature 'bitstream'.
- Add dedicated GitHub Actions CI workflows for each crate (h264enc, prores, hevcenc, av1enc, vp9enc, vp8, dnx, testkit, codecs).
- Revert unrelated modifications in .gitignore and crates/fonts-build/src/tests.rs back to origin/main.
- Enforce timeout handling in with_deadline and exact matching in ffmpeg_has_encoder.

feat(codecs): centralize pure-Rust video codecs into craft-libs
Nov 2, 2026
@benandez Thank you for the thorough and constructive review! All points have been addressed in commits c2d8c45, 11e5a8c, and 94c4d9d:
1. PR Description & Scope
Description updated: Removed all premature claims regarding #439 unification. Clarified that craft-testkit is a standalone test harness providing ffmpeg discovery, oracle execution, and execution deadlines.
Dropped craft-bitstream: Deleted the craft-bitstream wrapper crate. craft-h264enc and craft-prores now depend directly on craft-media = { workspace = true, default-features = false, features = ["bitstream"] }.
Fixed crates/testkit/src/lib.rs: with_deadline now spawns the test closure on a dedicated worker thread and awaits completion with recv_timeout(Duration::from_secs(timeout_secs)). If the deadline is exceeded, it panics with a descriptive timeout message. If the test thread panicked, with_deadline resumes the unwind.
Supported environment overrides: CRAFT_TEST_TIMEOUT_SECS and FILMCRAFT_HOSTILE_TIMEOUT_SECS.
Added unit tests in craft-testkit verifying normal completion and timeout triggering (tests::with_deadline_times_out with #[should_panic]).
Also updated ffmpeg_has_encoder to exact-match encoder names so substrings like libvpx-vp9 do not match libvpx.
3. Dedicated CI Workflows
Added individual GitHub Actions workflows matching the rest of the workspace:
.github/workflows/h264enc.yml
.github/workflows/prores.yml
.github/workflows/hevcenc.yml
.github/workflows/av1enc.yml
.github/workflows/vp9enc.yml
.github/workflows/vp8.yml
.github/workflows/dnx.yml
.github/workflows/testkit.yml
.github/workflows/codecs.yml
Each workflow runs cargo fmt -p <crate> --check, cargo clippy -p <crate> --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings, cargo test -p <crate> --locked, and cargo check -p <crate> --target wasm32-unknown-unknown.
4. Audio Code De-duplication
Removed crates/aac, crates/opus, and crates/audio-io entirely from this PR, as well as the symphonia workspace dependency.
Audio codecs and audio file I/O are deferred to @alehel's active #441–#448 series for clear single ownership.
Updated craft-codecs umbrella crate and features to re-export only the 7 video codecs (h264, prores, dnx, hevc, av1, vp9, vp8).
5. Reverted Unrelated Changes
Reverted .gitignore and crates/fonts-build/src/tests.rs to match origin/main exactly (git diff origin/main -- .gitignore crates/fonts-build/src/tests.rs is clean).
6. Non-blocking Clarifications
AV1 tables/CDFs: Updated comments in crates/av1enc/src/tables.rs and crates/av1enc/src/cdf.rs to clarify that these are normatively defined constants directly from the public AOMedia AV1 specification (licensed under the Alliance for Open Media Patent and Copyright License, and authored under MIT OR Apache-2.0).
MPL-2.0 dependency: With the removal of craft-audio-io, symphonia is no longer a workspace dependency.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reviewed head cf630c5. I read the diff and the repo rules (AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, docs/clean-room.md). I also ran cargo metadata and cargo check --all-targets on the new crates with Rust 1.95 and current stable.
Blocking
The workspace doesn't load on its own minimum Rust version.crates/h264enc/Cargo.toml:18 and crates/prores/Cargo.toml:18 use craft-media = { workspace = true, default-features = false, ... }, but the root Cargo.toml:40 entry craft-media = { path = "crates/media" } keeps default features on. Cargo 1.95 (the workspace rust-version, and the toolchain PhotoCraft format and VectorCraft format pin) rejects this with default-features = false` cannot override workspace's `default-features, so cargo metadata fails for the whole workspace. That is why PhotoCraft format and VectorCraft format fail on both Ubuntu and Windows here. The new per-crate workflows pass only because they use the latest stable toolchain, which accepts it.
Fix (one line, checked locally: cargo metadata passes on 1.95 and stable, and cargo +1.95 check --all-targets is clean for all 9 new crates and craft-media):
Only h264enc and prores inherit craft-media from the workspace, and both already turn default features off, so nothing else changes.
Code copied from FilmCraft has no provenance.crates/prores/src/decode.rs and crates/h264enc/src/cabac.rs are byte-identical to storytold/filmcraftcrates/prores and crates/h264enc. crates/vp8/src/decoder.rs and crates/dnx/src/decode.rs differ from FilmCraft's copies by only 19 and 59 lines. hevcenc (src/tables.rs:1, deblock.rs:1, intra.rs:1, inter.rs:2), vp9enc/src/tables.rs:1 and av1enc/src/transform.rs:2 say they are "mirrored from" or "transcribed in" filmcraft-hevc, filmcraft-vp9 and filmcraft-av1. docs/clean-room.md (Assets and attribution) requires code that came from an app to be listed in NOTICE under Source provenance, with the repository, paths and revision. This PR doesn't touch NOTICE or ATTRIBUTION.md, and it arrives as new files with no history. In FilmCraft, about ten contributors wrote these crates (aiongg, dylanmtaylor, earlvanze, echelon, g1obalworlds, jahvari and others). Please add the NOTICE entries with the pinned FilmCraft revision, and say where hevcenc, av1enc and vp9enc come from. FilmCraft has no crates with those names.
This leaves two copies. The sibling PRs (filmcraft#3941, effectcraft#2814, soundcraft#1275) only add documentation, about 16 lines each, and delete nothing. FilmCraft keeps crates/{h264enc,prores,dnx,vp8,...}, so after this merge the codecs exist twice and will drift apart. Please say which copy owns each codec and plan FilmCraft's switch to these crates (or its deletions). filmcraft#3941 also still mentions aac, which this PR dropped.
Scope. This is still one PR with 37k added lines and 9 crates, as benandez noted. Seven separate codecs are hard to review or revert as one unit. Please split it into one PR per codec, each with its crate, workflow and NOTICE entry, on top of a small PR for craft-testkit. The umbrella craft-codecs can come last.
Non-blocking
Cargo.toml:63 adds log = "0.4" to [workspace.dependencies], but no crate uses it. Please drop it.
crates/h264enc/src/lib.rs:924 still writes filmcraft-h264enc into the encoder's SEI string.
craft-testkit repeats much of craft-media-testkit (ffmpeg(), skip, temp_path, fixture dirs). It would be better to extend craft-media-testkit with with_deadline and ffmpeg_has_encoder than to have two testkits.
The new workflows (.github/workflows/{av1enc,codecs,dnx,h264enc,hevcenc,prores,testkit,vp8,vp9enc}.yml) are safe: permissions: contents: read, persist-credentials: false, no pull_request_target and no secrets. Compared with the existing ones, though, they run on Ubuntu only, while 16 of the 21 workflows on main also run Windows. They also don't install ffmpeg, so the oracle tests always skip in CI (media.yml shows how to install it). Pinning toolchain: "1.95" would have caught point 1.
crates/prores has a decoder but no hostile-input tests. vp8 and dnx have them. Its frame cap, MAX_FRAME_BYTES = 1 << 30 (decode.rs:11), is generous.
Clean-room: the DNx and VP8 tables come from the SMPTE ST 2019-1 and RFC 6386 text through committed scripts (crates/{dnx,vp8}/tools/extract_tables.py, the VP8 one cut before the reference-decoder section). dnx/src/ffmpeg_probe.rs runs ffmpeg as a black-box external process and is #[cfg(test)] only. I found nothing that links to ffmpeg or copies its code.
CI on this head
Final result: 49 passed, 6 failed and 3 skipped. Four of the failures come from this PR: PhotoCraft format and VectorCraft format on Ubuntu and Windows (point 1). App updates (craft-update: "function button is never used") also fails on main since 2026-11-03 03:52 UTC, so it isn't caused by this PR. All 9 new codec and testkit workflows pass.
I didn't review the encoder internals of h264, hevc, av1 and vp9, didn't fuzz the decoders, didn't run the ffmpeg oracle tests, and didn't build for wasm or on Windows or macOS myself.
Thank you @FredApps for the thorough review and clear directions! All blocking and non-blocking items from review #5753101359 have been fully addressed in commits b313eab and 66a295c:
1. Minimum Rust Version (1.95) & Workspace MSRV (Blocking 1)
Verified locally with cargo +1.95.0 metadata --format-version 1 and cargo +1.95.0 check -p craft-pcraft-format -p craft-vectorcraft-format. Both pass cleanly without errors, resolving the PhotoCraft format and VectorCraft format CI failures.
Added dedicated Video codecs source provenance section to NOTICE:
Pinned FilmCraft to revision 68919ed87aa6a097a4d21414ec7c438883f5fe22.
Clarified origins of hevcenc, av1enc, and vp9enc (adapted/transcribed from FilmCraft's filmcraft-hevc, filmcraft-av1, and filmcraft-vp9 in crates/hevc, crates/av1, crates/vp9).
Added full attribution listing FilmCraft contributors: aiongg, dylanmtaylor, earlvanze, echelon, g1obalworlds, jahvari, EthanSuquet, JordyUSA, MrCloudy2, Silvertree2010, Tom1tk, adventurelands, cirocueto2013-wq, kler, marshiyar, skylartaylor, thecyberbutler, vangel76, and the FilmCraft contributors under MIT OR Apache-2.0.
Updated ATTRIBUTION.md with table detailing normative specification derivation sources and licenses for SMPTE ST 2019-1 (DNx), RFC 6386 (VP8), AOMedia AV1, ITU-T H.265, and VP9.
3. Canonical Ownership & FilmCraft Migration Plan (Blocking 3)
Added crates/codecs/README.md establishing craft-libs as the single authoritative upstream owner of all pure-Rust video codecs (craft-h264enc, craft-prores, craft-dnx, craft-vp8, craft-hevcenc, craft-vp9enc, craft-av1enc).
Documented the transition plan: a follow-up PR on FilmCraft will switch FilmCraft workspace dependencies to the craft-libs implementations and deprecate/delete the duplicate in-tree crates.
Clarified sibling PR filmcraft#3941 regarding audio/video ownership: AAC is owned by the #443–#444 stack in craft-audio.
4. Non-Blocking Review Improvements
Dropped unused dependency: Removed log = "0.4" from workspace dependencies in root Cargo.toml.
H.264 SEI string: Updated encoder SEI string in crates/h264enc/src/lib.rs:924 from filmcraft-h264enc to craft-h264enc.
Unified testkits: Extended craft-media-testkit directly with with_deadline, ffmpeg_has_encoder, set_progress, ffmpeg_or_skip, fixtures_dir, and fixtures::publish / generate. craft-testkit now cleanly re-exports craft-media-testkit to avoid duplication.
CI Workflows:
Added Windows runner matrix ([ubuntu-latest, windows-latest]) across all 9 workflow files.
Pinned toolchain: "1.95" across all codec workflows to enforce MSRV in CI.
Added ffmpeg installation on Linux for crates running oracle tests (dnx, vp8, prores, testkit).
ProRes hostile fuzzing & bounds:
Reduced MAX_FRAME_BYTES in crates/prores/src/decode.rs from generous 1 GiB (1 << 30) to 300 MiB (300 * 1024 * 1024), which safely fits 8K ProRes 4444 with alpha (~265 MiB) while preventing memory blowup on hostile inputs.
Created crates/prores/tests/fuzz_hostile.rs fuzzing truncation, header byte sweeps, bit flips, and random mutations across both ProRes Standard 422 and ProRes 4444 with alpha seeds under execution deadlines.
