craft-media: shared codec identifiers, one ByteSource, the testkit (1/10) - #439
Part 1 of 10 of #395, split in the order @FredApps recommended there. Each PR in the stack targets main and builds on the one before it, so until the PRs below it merge, GitHub also shows their commits. This PR is the bottom of the stack, so all its commits are its own: ca0fcb4 is the change, and 465591d, f5dc7cf, 62f994f, 2ae3422 and 70c6ff0 are review fixes.
What the series is for
SoundCraft, FilmCraft and EffectCraft each wrote their own audio encoders and decoders, and several overlap: three WAV/AIFF writers, two FLAC encoders, and FilmCraft's AAC and MP1/MP2 decoders next to symphonia's. The series moves them into craft-libs so each format has one implementation that every app uses. Where two implementations overlapped, both were measured against ffmpeg and the reference tools and the stronger one was kept; #395 has the comparison.
When all ten parts have merged:
craft-media holds the containers (MP4/MOV, Matroska/WebM, Ogg), bit I/O, and the types every codec crate needs to take a track from a demuxer: CodecId, CodecParams, Container, ByteSource.
craft-audio holds the audio codecs and WAV/AIFF file I/O, each format behind its own feature, so an app compiles only what it uses. symphonia stays as a fallback for formats with no native decoder yet (MP3, FLAC decoding, ALAC, Vorbis, CAF, ADPCM, A-law/µ-law) until those are written.
A video crate can later sit beside craft-audio on craft-media, reusing the demuxers, CodecParams and the testkit. The two codec crates never depend on each other, so audio-only apps such as SoundCraft never compile video code.

No app changes in the series. Each app keeps its own codec code until it switches to craft-audio in its own follow-up.
Why this part comes first
A craft-audio decoder is set up from a CodecParams, whichever container the track came from, and the demuxers read through a ByteSource. Before this PR, craft-media had no codec identifiers or codec parameters, and two separate ByteSource traits (one per container). This PR adds the shared types and one ByteSource, so that the Ogg demuxer (part 2) and craft-audio (parts 3–10) can build on them. It has no codec code.

#439 craft-media: shared codec identifiers, one ByteSource, the testkit ← this PR
All ten together are #395's final tree on current main, plus one change from the review: actions/checkout is pinned to a commit SHA in audio.yml. Each PR builds, passes clippy for every feature set and passes its tests on its own.
What this adds
The types a codec crate needs from craft-media, before any codec crate exists. A refactor with additions; the existing craft-media tests cover the moved code.
Container, CodecId, PcmFormat and CodecParams (src/id.rs), always built, with serde behind the new serde feature.
codec_params() on isobmff::Track and matroska::Track, both returning a CodecParams in the same form. extradata follows Matroska's CodecPrivate: MP4's dOps is converted to an OpusHead, Vorbis headers are Xiph-laced (xiph_lace), and APV is the bare APVDecoderConfigurationRecord. The two agree on the CodecId for the same codec, including ALAC and DNxHD/DNxHR (AVdn, AVdh) in Matroska, and both report Opus at 48 kHz, the rate it decodes at. For MPEG audio, which MP4 entries don't label by layer, MP4 reports Mp1, Mp2 or Mp3 from the first frame header. An MP4 track's codec_params() describes the first sample's sample description; codec_params_for(description_index) gives any other, and has_mixed_descriptions() says whether a track uses more than one.
One ByteSource trait in src/source.rs, with ReadSeekSource. The two copies in isobmff/source.rs and matroska/source.rs are removed, and isobmff::ByteSource and matroska::ByteSource re-export this one. Every implementation fails a read past the end with UnexpectedEof, tested for in-memory buffers, File and ReadSeekSource.
craft-media-testkit (publish = false): the ffmpeg/ffprobe discovery, skip-or-fail rule and fixture locations from crates/media/tests/common, so craft-media and craft-audio share one copy.
media.yml also runs on testkit changes, and clippy covers serde and the testkit.
Testing
Run locally on this branch, as media.yml runs them: cargo fmt --check, clippy with -D warnings for each craft-media feature set in the workflow (and for the Windows target), the testkit's clippy, the WASM cargo check, and the craft-media tests. All pass, except oracle_matroska::laced_remux, which fails the same way on main with this machine's ffmpeg build ("vorbis.mkv Xiph: nothing was laced"). It is unrelated to this PR. Not run locally: the MSRV build.
The types a codec crate needs to describe a file and configure a
decoder, ahead of craft-audio:
- `Container`, `CodecId`, `PcmFormat` and `CodecParams` (`id.rs`),
always built, with optional serde.
- `codec_params()` on `isobmff::Track` and `matroska::Track`, both
returning `CodecParams` in the same form; `extradata` follows
Matroska's `CodecPrivate`.
- One `ByteSource` trait (`source.rs`), with `ReadSeekSource`;
`isobmff::ByteSource` and `matroska::ByteSource` are that trait.
- craft-media-testkit (`publish = false`): the ffmpeg oracle helpers
from craft-media's tests, so the codec crates share one copy.
The existing tests prove the refactor; the new types have their own.

The PR adds shared container and codec metadata types, unifies random-access byte sources across ISO BMFF and Matroska, and exposes codec parameters through both demuxers. It also adds shared oracle-test helpers, optional serde support, and CI coverage.
Changes: Shared media foundation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared media contracts crates/media/src/id.rs, crates/media/src/lib.rs, crates/media/Cargo.toml, crates/media/README.md
Adds container and codec identifiers, PCM and codec-parameter types, and Xiph-lacing support. The crate exports these APIs and documents feature availability and serde support.
Both container modules now use the shared byte-source interface. ReadSeekSource stores its reader and position behind a mutex. Tests cover bounds, read ordering, and recovery after a panicking read.
ISO BMFF codec configurations expose codec IDs and extradata, and Opus configurations can produce an OpusHead header. Both container track types expose common CodecParams.

No merge-blocking defect was established. The Opus metadata test should also check its header.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f5dc7
The changes are limited to shared media-library interfaces and test support. The reviewed paths preserve checked metadata access and improve reader recovery, with no demonstrated new privileged consumer. Compatibility and security behavior in external consumers remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is within the process using craft-media: attacker-supplied media can influence projected codec metadata and configuration allocations. The reviewed conversion path does not itself gain credentials, launch tools, or introduce a cross-service authority transition.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — No introduced security attack path was established through the new ISO BMFF entrypoints. Sample-description derivation remains unchanged, explicit lookup is checked, and inspection found no production decoder consumer of the new methods in the reviewed tree. External and later stacked consumers remain outside this conclusion.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Testkit executable discovery still trusts explicit environment paths, PATH, and known installation directories. Generator execution accepts a caller-created Command. This authority already existed in the original test helpers; extraction does not introduce a production execution path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Fixture generation preserves the previous publication sequence: successful command completion precedes rename to the final path. Start, command, or rename failures attempt temporary-file cleanup before applying the skip-or-fail policy. Cleanup is best-effort, and interruption cleanup is not guaranteed; those limitations predate extraction.

…d lock
An MP4 apvC track gave CodecParams.extradata with the 4-byte FullBox header
in front, where Matroska's V_APV CodecPrivate is the bare
APVDecoderConfigurationRecord. ApvConfig::record_bytes serializes the record
alone and extradata uses it.
ReadSeekSource kept its tracked position after recovering a poisoned lock or
a failed seek, so a reader moved by a panic was read from the wrong offset
with no error. Both now force a seek on the next read.

Expose codec parameters for the selected sample description.
stsd can contain multiple entries, and stsc, tfhd, or trex selects the entry for each sample. The parser preserves that selection in Sample::description_index. Mp4File::read_sample returns the selected sample bytes, but Track::codec_params() always reports the first entry.
A valid track can use entry 2 while entry 1 is unused. If the entries have different codecs or configuration records, the returned CodecParams can configure a decoder for the wrong codec or extradata. Change the API to expose parameters for the sample description selected by each sample, and do not advertise one configuration for a track with multiple active descriptions.

Track::codec_params always described the first stsd entry, while each sample
selects its own through description_index. It now describes the first
sample's entry; codec_params_for gives the parameters of any entry, and
has_mixed_descriptions says whether one set covers every sample.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the workflow hunk (the first of ten parts, "1/10"): the shared media workflow's path filters gain crates/media-testkit/**, so changes to the new testkit crate run the media job; the title adds shared codec identifiers, one ByteSource, and the testkit. A staged series of ten PRs needs the plan stated: what each part adds, in which order they must land, and what is left in the old places until the last part. A shared ByteSource (the reading abstraction that the container demuxers use) must have bounds on every read and on seeking (see craft-libs#457 and #430 for the Matroska work that touches this area). The testkit should build media in memory, so tests carry no binary files. I did not read the crates, and the workflow file's other lines are as before. Add tests for the ByteSource over a file and a memory buffer (the same results), a read past the end, and a seek to a negative position. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
…is an EOF
A File and a ReadSeekSource over a file now have the buffer's test: the same
bytes at the same offsets, and UnexpectedEof past the end. The test found
that a File read at an offset past i64::MAX failed with the OS's
InvalidInput instead of the UnexpectedEof the trait promises; it now
reports the end of the source like the other implementations.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks for the review @FredApps. Taking the points in order:
Plan for the series. The PR description lists the ten parts in landing order; each targets main and builds on the one before it. Nothing in craft-libs stays behind in an old place: the only old copies here are the two ByteSource traits in isobmff/source.rs and matroska/source.rs, and this PR removes them (the module paths re-export the shared trait). The audio codecs being moved in parts 3–10 come from the apps (SoundCraft, FilmCraft, EffectCraft), which keep their own copies until they switch to craft-audio after #448.
Bounds on reads and seeks.ByteSource has no seek: it has one method, read_at(offset: u64, buf), and every implementation checks the range before reading. In-memory buffers return UnexpectedEof rather than index out of range, ReadSeekSource checks offset + len against the length it read once at construction, and File uses positional reads that fail at the end of the file. Limits on how much a demuxer reads or scans (#457, #430) belong to the Matroska demuxer, not this trait, and those PRs cover them.
Testkit and binary files. The PR adds no binary files. The testkit finds ffmpeg/ffprobe and decides whether to skip; the oracle tests generate their inputs under target/ when they run, and the synthetic tests build media in memory.
Tests. Added in 62f994f: file_sources_read_like_a_buffer runs the same reads on a Vec<u8>, a File and a ReadSeekSource<File> and checks they return the same bytes (including reads out of order, so ReadSeekSource seeks back), and that reads past the end fail with UnexpectedEof for all three, up to offsets near u64::MAX. A negative position can't be expressed, since offsets are u64. The test also found that a File read past i64::MAX failed with the OS's InvalidInput; it now reports UnexpectedEof like the other sources.
Since your review: 465591d (APV extradata without the box header; ReadSeekSource seeks again after a poisoned lock) and f5dc7cf (isobmff::Track::codec_params follows the first sample's description; new codec_params_for and has_mixed_descriptions), both from CodeRabbit's review. Branches 2–10 are rebased onto these.
Tested locally: craft-media and craft-audio tests, clippy -D warnings for all features (including clippy for the Windows target), and the WASM check. All pass except oracle_matroska::laced_remux, which also fails on main with this machine's ffmpeg build.
Thanks for structuring this series, @alehel! The container abstractions in this PR (Container, CodecId, CodecParams, and the unified ByteSource) provide exactly the clean boundary needed to feed demuxed tracks into pure-Rust decoders.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This is a comment, not an approval: no CI has run at head 62f994f yet, because the fork workflows are waiting for maintainer approval. I found nothing blocking in the code.
Run locally at this head, in an isolated worktree:
clippy with -D warnings for --all-features, for --no-default-features --features serde, and for craft-media-testkit: clean.
cargo test -p craft-media --all-features --no-fail-fast: everything passes except oracle_matroska::laced_remux ("vorbis.mkv Xiph: nothing was laced"). That test fails the same way on main with this machine's ffmpeg, so it is unrelated to this PR.
Checked and fine
ByteSource: every implementation fails a read past the end with UnexpectedEof, including at u64::MAX and past i64::MAX for File. ReadSeekSource re-seeks after a failed or panicked read, and the move from RefCell to Mutex keeps it usable through &self.
OpusConfig::opus_head: matches RFC 7845 §5.1. The fields are written little-endian, version 1, and the stream count, coupled count and mapping are added only when the family is not 0.
xiph_lace: a length of exactly 255 is written as 255, 0, as Xiph lacing requires. It returns None for 0 packets and for more than 256.
codec_params_for: an index of 0 or out of range returns Unknown, and codec_params falls back to entry 1. The channels and sample_rate conversions saturate rather than panic on hostile values.
Testkit move: the skip-or-fail rule and the fixture root (<workspace>/target/fixtures) are unchanged.
Non-blocking
Places where MP4 and Matroska codec_params disagree for the same codec:
ALAC: Matroska A_ALAC maps to CodecId::Unknown; MP4 maps ALAC to Alac.
DNx: stored in Matroska as V_MS/VFW/FOURCC (AVdn), it maps to Unknown; MP4 maps it to Dnxhd.
Opus sample rate: MP4 always reports 48 kHz; Matroska passes through the declared SamplingFrequency, which a muxer may have set to the input rate.
MPEG audio: MP4 reports every layer as Mp3. That is documented, but it means MP2 in MP4 won't reach a native MP2 decoder unless the consumer checks the frame header.
ReadSeekSource: once a read has panicked, the mutex stays poisoned, so every later read takes the recovery path and seeks again. That is a cost only, not a correctness problem. Mutex::clear_poison (stable since 1.77, within this workspace's MSRV) would avoid it.
Matroska's codec_params gave Unknown for A_ALAC and for DNxHD/DNxHR stored
as V_MS/VFW/FOURCC (AVdn, AVdh), where MP4 gives Alac and Dnxhd; ALAC's
extradata is the CodecPrivate, the ALACSpecificConfig MP4's alac box holds.
Opus now reports 48 kHz from Matroska as from MP4, whatever rate the muxer
declared.
ReadSeekSource clears the poison when it recovers the lock, so one
panicked read costs one recovery instead of a seek on every later read.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An MP4 track with MPEG audio reported CodecId::Mp3 whatever the layer, since
mp4a + 0x69/0x6B names none (ffmpeg stores MP2 that way), while Matroska
reports Mp1/Mp2/Mp3 from its CodecID. open() now reads the frame header of
each such entry's first sample and codec_params() reports the layer it
names; without a valid header, QuickTime's .mp2 gives Mp2 and anything else
Mp3 as before. CodecConfig::Mp3 is unchanged.

The fixture contains an OpusHead, but the assertion checks only the codec, sample rate, and channel count. A regression that drops the Opus header from CodecParams.extradata would still pass this test.

@benandez thanks for the review. All the non-blocking points are fixed, in 2ae3422 and 70c6ff0:
ALAC: Matroska A_ALAC now maps to CodecId::Alac, with the CodecPrivate (the ALACSpecificConfig, the same bytes MP4's alac box holds after its FullBox header) as extradata.
DNx:V_MS/VFW/FOURCC with AVdn or AVdh now maps to CodecId::Dnxhd; the FourCC stays in tag.
Opus sample rate: Matroska now reports 48 kHz, as MP4 does, whatever rate the muxer declared. The CodecParams docs say so.
MPEG audio in MP4:open() now reads the frame header of the first sample of each MPEG audio entry, and codec_params() reports Mp1, Mp2 or Mp3 from it, as Matroska does from its CodecID. Without a valid header, QuickTime's .mp2 gives Mp2 and anything else Mp3 as before. CodecConfig::Mp3 itself is unchanged.
ReadSeekSource: the recovery path calls Mutex::clear_poison, so a panicked read costs one recovery instead of a seek on every later read. The panicked-read test checks that the lock is no longer poisoned.
New tests: alac_dnx_and_opus_match_mp4 writes a Matroska file with an ALAC, a DNx and a 44.1 kHz-declared Opus track and checks what codec_params() returns for each; mpeg_audio_layer_comes_from_the_first_frame writes MP4 files with layer I, II and III frames, a frame with no valid header, and a QuickTime .mp2 entry.
Run locally at 70c6ff0: craft-media tests, clippy -D warnings for --all-features, for --no-default-features --features serde and for the Windows target, and the WASM check. On top of the stack, the craft-audio tests also pass. The only failure is oracle_matroska::laced_remux, as before.
Merged, thanks for the work and review fixes! This gives the media stack shared codec identifiers and parameters, one ByteSource implementation, and reusable test helpers. MP4 and Matroska now expose consistent decoder metadata, ready for the audio and video work to build on.

mainand builds on the one before it, so until the PRs below it merge, GitHub also shows their commits.
CodecId,CodecParams,Container,ByteSource.CodecParamsand the testkit. The two codec crates never depend on each other, so audio-only apps such as SoundCraft never compile video code.%%{init: {"flowchart": {"htmlLabels": false}}}%% graph TD SC["SoundCraft"] --> A FC["Film-/EffectCraft"] --> A FC -.-> V A["craft-audio<br/>audio codecs, file I/O"] --> M V["craft-video<br/>video codecs (later)"] -.-> M M["craft-media<br/>containers, bit I/O, shared types"] classDef later stroke-dasharray: 5 5 class V laterDashed: the planned video crate.
No app changes in the series. Each app keeps its own codec code until it switches to craft-audio in its own follow-up.
Why this part comes first
A craft-audio decoder is set up from a
CodecParams, whichever container the track came from, and the demuxers read through aByteSource. Before this PR, craft-media had no codec identifiers or codec parameters, and two separateByteSourcetraits (one per container). This PR adds the shared types and oneByteSource, so that the Ogg demuxer (part 2) and craft-audio (parts 3–10) can build on them. It has no codec code. All ten together are #395's final tree on current
main, plus one change from the review:actions/checkoutis pinned to a commit SHA inaudio.yml. Each PR builds, passes clippy for every feature set and passes its tests on its own. What this adds
The types a codec crate needs from craft-media, before any codec crate exists. A refactor with additions; the existing craft-media tests cover the moved code.
Container,CodecId,PcmFormatandCodecParams(src/id.rs), always built, withserdebehind the newserdefeature.codec_params()onisobmff::Trackandmatroska::Track, both returning aCodecParamsin the same form.extradatafollows Matroska'sCodecPrivate: MP4'sdOpsis converted to anOpusHead, Vorbis headers are Xiph-laced (xiph_lace), and APV is the bareAPVDecoderConfigurationRecord. The two agree on theCodecIdfor the same codec, including ALAC and DNxHD/DNxHR (AVdn,AVdh) in Matroska, and both report Opus at 48 kHz, the rate it decodes at. For MPEG audio, which MP4 entries don't label by layer, MP4 reportsMp1,Mp2orMp3from the first frame header. All pass, exceptoracle_matroska::laced_remux, which fails the same way onmainwith this machine's ffmpeg build ("vorbis.mkv Xiph: nothing was laced"). It is unrelated to this PR.
