Part 4 of 10 of #395, split in the order FredApps recommended there. Each PR in the stack targets main and builds on the one before it, so until the PRs below it merge, GitHub also shows their commits. #439, #440 and #441 have merged and this PR sits directly on main, so all its commits are its own: 5507322 is the change, and 7c88c20, 76df23e, 1648f33, 8ba7778, 82424e5, 430ad15, c008e8e, 82f63f3, 5617261, afdc045, 1a9f579, 57f5d06, 99dcf51, 2f4fb8b, a4f02a3, e8b7c40, 04df866, d1d2564 and f31c932 the review fixes.

What the series is for

SoundCraft, FilmCraft and EffectCraft each wrote their own audio encoders and decoders, and several overlap: three WAV/AIFF writers, two FLAC encoders, and FilmCraft's AAC and MP1/MP2 decoders next to symphonia's. The series moves them into craft-libs so each format has one implementation that every app uses. Where two implementations overlapped, both were measured against ffmpeg and the reference tools and the stronger one was kept; #395 has the comparison.

When all ten parts have merged:

  • craft-media holds the containers (MP4/MOV, Matroska/WebM, Ogg), bit I/O, and the types every codec crate needs to take a track from a demuxer: CodecId, CodecParams, Container, ByteSource.
  • craft-audio holds the audio codecs and WAV/AIFF file I/O, each format behind its own feature, so an app compiles only what it uses. symphonia stays as a fallback for formats with no native decoder yet (MP3, FLAC decoding, ALAC, Vorbis, CAF, ADPCM, A-law/µ-law) until those are written.
  • A video crate can later sit beside craft-audio on craft-media, reusing the demuxers, CodecParams and the testkit. The two codec crates never depend on each other, so audio-only apps such as SoundCraft never compile video code.

Dashed: the planned video crate.

No app changes in the series. Each app keeps its own codec code until it switches to craft-audio in its own follow-up. #395 has the full design, the comparison of overlapping implementations and the migration notes for apps.

# PR Merged

8 #446 craft-audio: Opus encoder
9 #447 craft-audio: AC-3 and E-AC-3 decoder
10 #448 craft-audio: MP1/MP2 decoder

All ten together are #395's final tree on current main, plus one change from the review: actions/checkout is pinned to a commit SHA in audio.yml. Each PR builds, passes clippy for every feature set and passes its tests on its own.

What this adds

FilmCraft's FLAC encoder behind flac-encode, written through encode/FileEncoder as EncodeFormat::Flac. lossless-encode is now pcm-encode + flac-encode. With only one of the two, the other's formats return Unsupported.

SoundCraft FilmCraft (kept)
Size on 12 test signals baseline 0.1–37% smaller (LPC, stereo decorrelation)
STREAMINFO MD5 no yes
32-bit integer and float input no yes
Speed 3–5× faster about 56× real time

Output is bit-exact through ffmpeg, and its STREAMINFO MD5 is checked against ffmpeg (src/write/flac/oracle_tests.rs). The table's numbers are from the comparison in #395, before the review changes below. The vendor string is craft-audio <version>.

The decode-hardening tests that use FLAC files as fixtures need this encoder, so they come with it: truncation and byte corruption, metadata bounds, ID3 before FLAC, zero-frame files, and container preflight. Those files decode through symphonia.

Changes from the review

This PR went through nineteen review rounds, one commit per round. Rounds 10 and 11 found no encoder defect: round 10 adds tests, and round 11 is a cleanup that leaves the 74 oracle test streams byte-identical. Rounds 12 to 19 are mostly on the read side and the feature checks.

  • Speed: encode and FileEncoder hand the encoder one 4096-frame block at a time. A whole-buffer encode drained the pending samples quadratically; 480 s of stereo took 19 s and now takes 5 s.
  • Size: low bits that are zero in every sample of a subframe are coded as wasted bits (RFC 9639 §9.2.2), so 16-bit audio exported at 24 or 32 bits no longer grows by the padding. Residuals may use the full 32-bit range (§9.2.7.3); the limit was half that, so at 32 bits a transient forced its whole block to verbatim.
  • symphonia: a linear predictor whose prediction leaves the i32 range is refused. Such a stream is valid, but symphonia adds the prediction to the residual as an i32, which panics in a debug build. Without the profile override, 13 of 240 clipped 32-bit test streams failed in a debug build and none do now, for 0.09% more bytes.
  • Speaker layouts: a layout that decoders would not assume for the channel count is recorded as a WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK comment. libFLAC and ffmpeg read 5 or 6 channels with no comment as side surrounds, and FLAC's 7-channel order is 6.1 with side surrounds, so the crate's usual back-surround layouts were decoded with channels on the wrong speakers.
  • Reading layouts back: FLAC files now read their layout from the mask comment in probe, decode and Decoder, including files with no audio frames. With no comment, the layout is the one the encoder leaves the comment out for: 5 and 6 channels have side surrounds, not back surrounds. This changes what a 5- or 6-channel FLAC with no comment reports. FLAC in Ogg reads its layout the same way, each stream from its own comment.
  • Unbuilt formats: encode and FileEncoder::new return Unsupported for a format whose feature is off before they check the layout, as the docs say.
  • Memory: encode no longer reserves half the PCM size before encoding, which could refuse output that would have fit.
  • Ogg track order: a track index now means the file's order everywhere, as tracks lists them. Streams that fall back to symphonia used the same index in symphonia's order, which follows the serial numbers, so a file could decode the wrong track or fail on a FLAC stream listed before an Opus one. This bug is also on main, from craft-audio: core types, WAV/AIFF read and write, peaks, symphonia (3/10) #441.
  • CI: the ffmpeg install step has a 3-minute limit and up to three tries, and the package repair between tries has a 1-minute limit. A stalled apt mirror used up the oracle job's 20 minutes on craft-audio: FLAC encoder (4/10) #442, craft-audio: AAC decoder (5/10) #443 and craft-audio: AC-3 and E-AC-3 decoder (9/10) #447 before any test ran.
  • Frame headers: sample rates outside the table are named in the header (codes 12–14), so rates like 11025 or 37800 Hz stay in the streamable subset.
  • 32-bit sample size code: frame headers use code 0 ("as STREAMINFO says"), not code 7. Code 0 keeps 32-bit output outside the streamable subset, but symphonia 0.5 and libFLAC before 1.4 reject code 7.
  • Docs: the README's Limits section covers the mask comment, what is outside the streamable subset, and independent stereo at 32 bits.
  • Tests: frame numbers, STREAMINFO fields, every sample rate code, the Rice parameter and LPC shift limits, stereo decorrelation and the mask comment rules. Round 12 adds a flac-encode lib test that streams a file and compares it with encode, and the seek test now compares samples, not only frame counts. Rounds 16 and 17 make the Ogg track tests run both serial orders every time: they rewrite the file's serial numbers and page checksums, so they don't depend on ffmpeg's random serials. The new checks in rounds 6 and 10 were each confirmed to fail on a mutated encoder.

Testing

Run locally on this branch, as audio.yml runs them:

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings for each feature in the workflow's loop on its own, and for all features
  • rustdoc with -D warnings (all features, decode-native, lossless-encode)
  • WASM cargo check (all features, lossless-encode)
  • the workflow's subset test runs
  • cargo test -p craft-audio --all-features with CRAFT_MEDIA_REQUIRE_ORACLES=1 and ffmpeg 9.0.2

Not run locally: the MSRV job (1.95).

Explanation

The title "craft-audio: FLAC encoder (4/10)" names the main change. The changeset adds a FLAC encoder to craft-audio behind a new flac-encode feature, with EncodeFormat::Flac, a FLAC frame/subframe writer, MD5 and CRC helpers, and tests. The "(4/10)" suffix is a PR series marker. It adds no meaning about the change, but it does not make the title misleading. The title is concise and specific enough for a teammate scanning history to understand the primary change.

- FileEncoder/encode for FLAC hand the encoder one 4096-frame block at a
time: a whole-buffer encode drained the pending samples quadratically
(480 s of stereo took 19 s, now 5 s) and copied the whole input twice.
- Frame headers name sample rates outside the table (codes 12-14), so
streams at rates like 11025 or 37800 Hz stay in the streamable subset.
- The decode doctest needs symphonia to read FLAC at this point.
- README: FLAC output is verified against ffmpeg, not the flac tool.
- Tests: keep the AIFF force-RF64 check; exact 2^36 frame boundary.

No change in output: the 74 oracle test streams are byte-identical.

- The Wasted case is handled in one function, without the unreachable arm
and the wrapper round 8 added.
- The bitstream writer uses predict::fold, the tested copy, not its own.
- STREAMINFO's MD5 may be 0 (RFC 9639 §8.2), so the comment no longer says
  the RFC requires it.

Add a flac-only test that streams through FileEncoder.

The new flac-encode step runs only --lib. The audio integration target also requires decode and peaks, so its streamed FLAC cases do not run in this feature set. The FileEncoder doctest in write/mod.rs is skipped by --lib too. A regression in FLAC streaming, if one were introduced, would pass this step. Add a flac-encode-gated lib test that streams a FLAC file and compares it with encode, or run the doctests for this step.

Compare decoded samples after the FLAC seek in the test.

The test checks only the reported seek position and the summed frame count after dec.seek(4000). A decoder that returns 800 frames from the wrong position passes. Compare the samples returned after the seek with the source samples at frame 4000, for each format in the loop.

Read the channel-mask comment for Ogg FLAC streams.

For Ogg-contained FLAC, Symph::open keeps the layout from Symphonia. Symphonia's Ogg FLAC mapper does not read WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK. Public probe and decode can therefore report the wrong speaker assignments for such files.

FLAC in Ogg reads its layout the way a FLAC file does: from the mask
comment, or else the one decoders assume for the count. Without this, a
6-channel stream with no comment reported back surrounds in Ogg and side
surrounds in a FLAC file.

Add a seven-channel case to the Ogg FLAC layout test.

ogg_flac_reads_the_mask_comment in crates/audio/src/write/flac/oracle_tests.rs:246-250 covers 2, 4, and 6 channels only. Ogg FLAC without a mask comment takes its layout from flac_assumed_mask(7), which returns 0x70F. default_for(7) returns 0x13F. If the fallback changes to default_for(7), the reported layout of seven-channel Ogg FLAC changes, and this test still passes.

Add a seven-channel case that expects mask 0x70F and 7 channels. Use a seven-channel lavfi source, such as c=6.1, with no extra metadata. The generated file must not contain a WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK comment. If it does, the decoder reads the mask from the comment and the fallback path is not tested.

Add an Ogg FLAC case with a zero channel-mask comment.

The Ogg cases cover a 4-channel mask comment, a six-channel file with no comment, and a stereo file with an unrelated comment. No case writes WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK=0x0. The reader parses that comment to Some(0), and the layout is unordered six-channel. If the reader treated a zero mask as absent, it would use the default 0x60F layout. The current cases would still pass. A six-channel case with the zero mask would detect that change.

Comment thread crates/audio/src/read/symph.rs Resolved
Each FLAC stream in an Ogg file reads its own channel mask comment. The
tags symphonia's reader collects do not say which track they are from,
so a track could get another track's mask. The masks now come from
craft-media's Ogg demuxer, by serial, which is symphonia's track ID.

The Ogg layout test also covers 7 channels with no comment and a zero
mask.

Cover the unmasked-track fallback in a mixed-mask Ogg FLAC file.

The new test gives both streams a mask comment. In a multi-track file, the fallback for an unmasked track therefore never runs. A change that gives an unmasked track another stream's mask would not fail this test. Add a case where only track 0 has WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK. Assert that track 1 gets the layout for its four channels, layout_from(None, 4). Select each track by its audio, as the existing test does, because the track order follows the stream serial numbers.

A track index in an Ogg file means the same stream everywhere: the
file's order, as `tracks` lists them. Streams the native path does not
read fell back to symphonia with the same index, but symphonia orders
tracks by serial, which ffmpeg picks at random. A file could decode the
wrong track, or fail on a FLAC stream listed before an Opus one.

The tests write each file eight times, so both serial orders occur, and
cover a track with no mask comment next to one with a mask.

Make the Ogg track-order test require a reversed serial order.

When -fflags +bitexact is absent, ffmpeg draws each stream's serial number at random. two_ogg_streams does not set bitexact mode, so a file's streams can appear in reverse serial order. The loop passes a serial-ordered track selection whenever all eight runs match file order. That happens with a probability of about 1 in 256.

Repeat generation until a run writes the streams in reverse serial order. Then assert that such a run occurred. The helper below reads the serial numbers from the Ogg page headers. Bitexact mode cannot force the reversed order, because its serial numbers increase with the stream index.

The Ogg track tests no longer depend on chance. Each writes its file
until the serial numbers are in the order it asks for, in both orders,
so the reversed order that told the old code apart always runs. A file
this ffmpeg cannot write goes through `skip`, which fails the test when
oracles are required.

The Ogg track tests set their files' serial numbers instead of writing
the files until ffmpeg happens to pick the wanted order. They rewrite
each page's serial and checksum, so both orders run with one ffmpeg call
and do not depend on ffmpeg's serials being random.

Verdict: Comment (not an approval). Two independent reviews found no P1 or P2 in the code. The only thing keeping this from an Approve is that the ffmpeg oracle CI job didn't run at this head.

Head: 04df866. CI at this head (run 41904743323):

  • Lint/features/docs/WASM, MSRV and "without symphonia, lossless-encode only" all passed.
  • "Audio tests with ffmpeg oracles" was cancelled at the 20-minute timeout while it was building and installing ffmpeg, before any test ran. The #445 and #447 runs started at the same moment and were cancelled the same way, so this is an infra flake. It needs a re-run.
  • The previous head, e8b7c40, was green on every job, and round 17 only touches oracle_tests.rs.
  • Locally at this head, cargo test -p craft-audio --all-features --locked with CRAFT_MEDIA_REQUIRE_ORACLES=1 and ffmpeg n9.0.2 passes: 55 + 78 + 6 + 15 tests, 0 failed.

Findings (all P3, none blocking)

  • read/flac.rs comment_mask/comments_mask (reproduced): we read WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE_CHANNEL_MASK differently from libFLAC and ffmpeg in a few odd cases:

    • A bad first entry followed by a valid one: we use the valid one; they read only the first entry and fall back to the default.
    • Values like 0x3Fzz or 0x3F (trailing space): we reject them; libFLAC (%x) and ffmpeg (strtol) read the leading hex.
    • 0x0000: we read it as unordered; they treat it as unset (5.1 side). The README already documents this one.

All of these need malformed or unusual tags. Reading only the first entry and accepting a hex prefix would match libFLAC.

  • read/symph.rs open (source-traced): every symphonia open of an Ogg file now also runs ogg::open over the whole file. That's linear and capped, but it's a second demux pass and a per-packet index in memory. A cost note.

  • FLAC inside MKV/MP4 still reports symphonia's back-surround layout for 5 and 6 channels, while bare FLAC and Ogg FLAC now report side surrounds. This was already the case on main and is outside this PR's scope.

  • write/flac/frame.rs sample_size_code: the comment says symphonia 0.5 rejects code 7, but the locked version is 0.6.1, which accepts it. Code 0 is still reasonable for older decoders; the comment is stale.

Axes

  • Keyed state: nothing is cached by frame_number or total_samples. Ogg masks are looked up by serial, and symphonia-format-ogg 0.6.1 uses the serial as the track ID (a BTreeMap, so ordered by serial).
  • Guards and postchecks: check() limits channels to 1–8, the rate to 655,350 Hz and the depth. Sample range is checked in Encoder::encode, check_room caps at 2^36−1 frames before writing, and a failed write latches the writer.
  • Other actors: not applicable.
  • Pre-existing state: STREAMINFO is written at the start position + 8, and the output is deterministic. Only the first VORBIS_COMMENT block is read.
  • Our check vs the real consumer:
    • symphonia-bundle-flac 0.6.1's fixed_predict uses wrapping i64, so it's safe at 32 bits.
    • Its lpc_predict adds the prediction as an i32, which the new i32 limit on predictions covers.
    • The assumed masks 0x607, 0x60F and 0x70F match libFLAC and ffmpeg.
    • The mask-parsing differences are the P3 above.
  • Loosened predicates: 5-, 6- and 7-channel FLAC with no comment now reads as side surrounds. That's intended and matches libFLAC and ffmpeg. 1–4 and 8 channels read the same as before.
  • Sibling branches:
    • Every feature arm is gated, and check_built runs before the layout check.
    • Each stereo mode decodes through libFLAC.
    • streamed_flac_matches_encode runs only in the flac-only --lib job, not the all-features one.
  • Captured once, used many: planar and quantizers are refilled for each chunk, and effort is copied per frame.
  • Replaced path: the Ogg track index now follows file order, matching tracks() (same demuxer, same is_audio filter). If ogg::open fails, both fall back to symphonia's order. A stream symphonia has no track for returns an error, not the wrong track.
  • Hostile input and cost:
    • The comment and metadata walks use checked arithmetic and advance at least 4 bytes per step.
    • The truncation test cuts the comment block at every length.
    • Rice coding is linear in the bits written.
    • No panics on i32::MIN/MAX.

Extra encoder cases (reproduced)

Each case was checked with flac -t (decode plus STREAMINFO MD5) and ffmpeg -f null, and all passed with no warnings:

  • 32-bit stereo with i32::MIN/MAX injected, alternating MIN/MAX, and a constant i32::MIN
  • 24-bit side-channel extremes
  • depths 8, 12, 17, 20 and 31
  • block sizes 16 (multi-byte frame numbers), 257 and 65535
  • rates 1, 11025, 100001 (code 0), 255000, 256000, 655350 and 1048575
  • 1-sample tails and 1-sample streams
  • 8 channels at 24 bits
  • compression levels 0–8

Not checked: oracle_tests.rs and the tests/audio diffs line by line, the MSRV build locally, and the README prose.

CI: time-limit and retry the ffmpeg install. A stalled apt mirror used
up the oracle job's 20 minutes on storytold#442, storytold#443 and storytold#447 before any test
ran, and its log is only printed when the step fails. Each try now gets
3 minutes, up to three tries, and a timed-out install prints why.

  • The changes since benandez's review at 04df866: rounds 18 and 19 only change .github/workflows/audio.yml. The ffmpeg apt install is now retried up to 3 times with a 180 s timeout, which deals with the mirror stall that cancelled the oracle job at 04df866. It's small and keeps CI time bounded.
  • Never-crash rule: the added unwrap() calls are all in doctests and test code. The crate's lint header is unchanged, and the PR adds no unsafe.
  • I read benandez's P3 findings and agree they don't block. They are the channel-mask parsing differences from libFLAC/ffmpeg on malformed tags, the second Ogg demux pass, and FLAC-in-MKV/MP4 layouts, which already behave that way on main. The sample_size_code comment now says "earlier decoders (symphonia 0.5 …)", which is accurate.
  • Locally at f31c932: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p craft-audio --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings, and cargo test -p craft-audio --all-features --locked all pass (55 + 78 + 6 + 15 tests, 0 failed, plus doctests).
  • CI at this head is green on every job, including "Audio tests with ffmpeg oracles".

Not checked: I didn't build the MSRV locally (CI's MSRV job passed). I didn't test on Windows or macOS, and I didn't re-run benandez's extra encoder cases with flac -t.
