model/openai/sdkv3/responses: add responses api support - #2687
Add an OpenAI Responses adapter at model/openai/sdkv3/responses for the existing model, Agent, Runner, and Graph APIs. It supports client-managed multi-turn history, streaming previews, local function tools, image and file inputs, and JSON Schema output. The adapter uses OpenAI Go SDK v3.74.0 in a separate Go 1.25 module. The root module targets Go 1.21.
Why
Responses output includes item order, IDs, annotations, phase, and opaque reasoning that the common message fields cannot round-trip. Completed responses keep those items in Message.ProviderData for the next model request. Streaming dispatch waits for a validated completion, and history processing preserves the relationship between native calls and their results.
Updates #2443. Builds on the adapter configuration and mapping work in #2483.
Testing
Built the root module with Go 1.21 and ran the root test suite.
Ran tests and module metadata checks for the Responses adapter, E2E suite, Redis, SQLite, and runnable examples. The examples also build.
Verified that the Graph regression fails before the fix and passes with race detection. An AfterModel replacement with a plain reply executes zero tools.
Notes for reviewers
An AfterModel edit to ProviderData.Payload rebuilds text, reasoning, and tool calls before the response is published, saved, or used for tool execution. A replacement response determines the Graph tool route. Projection-only edits affect display or local execution, while the next model request uses the native payload. Redaction must cover both representations.
Message JSON stores provider_data with provider, model, and payload keys. Info.ProviderDataProtocol is omitted when empty. Native sessions need readers and writers that understand the field. Applications using positional Message or Info literals need keyed fields.
The adapter defaults to store=false. Server-managed continuation through previous_response_id or conversation, hosted tools, tool search, and provider-side compaction are outside this adapter's scope.
Before publishing the SDK module, release a root version containing the ProviderData APIs, update the SDK module's root requirement, and build an external consumer without repository-local replace directives.
See the adapter README for configuration, callbacks, and recovery behavior.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Adds an opt-in OpenAI Responses adapter in a separate Go 1.25 module. It supports client-managed history, streaming, and local function tools. It stores completed native output items as replay data, including opaque provider state, IDs, annotations, and phase. The framework validates replay records before model calls and tool execution, and preserves them through history processing, callbacks, persistence, checkpoints, and recovery.
Redis now rejects undecodable events that contain native replay data. It continues to skip malformed outer JSON without native replay data. The root module remains on Go 1.21, and existing Chat Completions defaults remain unchanged. New examples and CI checks cover the adapter and example module.
Public API and compatibility
The public model API adds ReplayData, Message.Replay, Message.SetReplayData, Message.ReplayDataFor, and Info.ReplayProtocol.
The new model/openai/responses package adds Model, New, Info, GenerateContent, callback types RequestCallbackFunc, ResponseCallbackFunc, and StreamEventCallbackFunc, plus Option and the configuration functions WithAPIKey, WithBaseURL, WithStore, WithChannelBufferSize, WithHTTPClientOptions, WithOpenAIOptions, WithExtraFields, WithRequestCallback, WithResponseCallback, and WithStreamEventCallback.
Before release, confirm that replay types and methods belong in the public model package and identify which adapters need them. Check for overlap with existing metadata and extension APIs. Define stable naming and identity rules for replay protocol, provider, and configured model. Review whether the callback and option APIs support future extensions without weakening validation. Document callback timing, persistence requirements, and unsupported features.
Consumers of the Responses package need Go 1.25. New fields on Message and Info can break positional struct literals; callers may need keyed literals. Sessions with replay data require compatible Session writers and a root module that provides the replay APIs.
Behavioral and operational risks
Edited, removed, or mismatched replay records fail validation before model calls or tool execution. Changes from callbacks, projectors, or incompatible Session writers can therefore cause requests to fail. Streaming output remains provisional until a valid completed snapshot arrives; incomplete or contradictory completion data must not expose executable tool calls. Hosted tools, tool search, background execution, approvals, provider compaction, and server-managed continuation are outside the stated scope.
A process interruption after a tool’s external effect but before durable completion can cause the tool to run again during recovery. Make retryable tools idempotent or add application-level deduplication. Replay also restricts mixed-model routing: replay-capable candidates must share the required protocol and configured model identity.
Recommended validation
Use Go 1.25 to run the Responses module tests and example checks. Check module tidiness and build both examples. Run regression tests for replay serialization and validation, history projection, callbacks, routing, persistence, checkpoints, recovery, stream errors, and cancellation. Test Session round-trips for each supported database with a mocked endpoint before live-model checks.
The PR description reports passing root and adapter suites, race checks, lint, formatting, coverage, and example builds. It also reports two OpenClaw test failures that match the baseline in the author’s environment. These results are not independently verified here. Review finding counts and overall completion status are unavailable.
The change adds versioned provider-native replay data and an OpenAI Responses adapter. Framework history processing, model execution, routing, tool handling, and session storage now account for replay records. It also adds interactive examples and adapter, integration, and workflow tests.

Skip the request snapshot when no request callback is configured.
GenerateContent calls json.Marshal(params) on every request. validateCallbackParams then marshals the params again and decodes both copies into maps. This happens even when m.requestCallback is nil, and in that case the params cannot change. Every request carries the full client-managed history, including base64 image and file data and all replay payloads. The adapter therefore serializes and parses the whole conversation two extra times on every call. Run the snapshot and the validation only when a request callback is configured.

GitHub-hosted runners transition Node 16 actions to Node 20 and Node 20 actions to Node 24. These versions can produce deprecation warnings, but they do not cause this job to stop before its Go steps. This is a maintenance concern, not a major availability issue.

Treat typed replay accessors as an optional API refactor, not a blocking defect.
Message.Replay is exported, and ReplayData.MarshalJSON exposes the provider, model, and payload. An external model.TokenCounter can inspect this representation. ReplayDataFor remains the validated path when the producer identity is known.
A typed, copying payload accessor could improve ergonomics and avoid coupling counters to the JSON representation. However, no concrete consumer failure requires new exports. Add accessors only when an external use case justifies them under the AGENTS.md export-necessity rule. The README already states that custom counters must account for native state themselves.

EventHasReplayData returns false when the complete JSON is malformed. A truncated record that contains native replay data can therefore fail both decode attempts and reach continue, so loadRecentEvents can return incomplete history without an error. Use an explicit unclassified state and fail closed, or preserve legacy skipping only when the record can be classified safely.

The limitation is valid: syntactically malformed outer event JSON can prevent Replay classification and be skipped. This update preserves the existing Redis skip policy rather than changing shared history-reader behavior in the Responses PR. Recognizable replay-bearing records with invalid metadata are still rejected. The README now explicitly states that malformed outer JSON may be skipped and that a successful read does not prove every stored record was loaded. Broader corruption handling should be addressed separately; this limitation is not fixed by the current change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@bytethm Understood. Preserving the existing Redis skip policy is a compatibility decision. The malformed outer JSON case remains an acknowledged limitation, not a completed fix. Rejecting recognizable replay-bearing records does not guarantee complete history.
I accept deferring broader corruption handling to a separate change. Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue?

model/openai/responses: support stateless native replay and local tools
model/openai/responses: add responses api support
Oct 27, 2026
## What changed
Reduce disk usage during the repository-wide `go mod tidy` check by
releasing extracted dependency sources between modules. Downloaded
archives and Go toolchains remain available for reuse. Clean up the
complete temporary workspace on both success and failure.
## Why
The tidy check uses a fresh module cache across all modules. Extracted
dependency trees accumulate throughout the job; the check in #2687
failed while extracting dependencies with `disk quota exceeded`.
The script also reused its temporary-root variable for per-module
manifest snapshots, so its exit trap no longer referred to the original
cache directory. Separate lifetimes for the temporary root and snapshots
make cleanup reliable.
## Testing
- Shell syntax checks and `git diff --check`.
- The full repository tidy check and cache-cleanup regression passed on
[GitHub
Actions](https://github.com/trpc-group/trpc-agent-go/actions/runs/40624079659/job/122604736048).
- An automated fixture verifies that extracted sources are removed
between modules, archives and toolchains are retained, and a failed tidy
preserves its exit status and removes the temporary workspace. The
fixture fails against the previous script and runs before the full tidy
check in CI.
- A separate two-module check with real Go 1.25 verified offline archive
reuse after extracted sources were removed, unchanged manifests, and
cleanup on exit.
## Notes for reviewers
This affects CI tooling only. Downloaded archives still accumulate
during the job, and a single large module can still exceed available
disk space.
Builds on the adapter configuration and mapping work in trpc-group#2483 by liuzengh. Preserve native output items through the new framework replay contract and expose local tool calls only after a completed response.
Preserve native tool rounds during history sanitization and detach mutable projections before callbacks and tool execution. Validate Graph requests after callbacks while retaining legacy ownership behavior.
Avoid comparing unchanged request parameters when no callback is installed. Keep synchronous JSON encoding errors and cover the contract with and without callbacks.
Exercise checkpoint resume, tool-result replacement, SDK retries, cancellation under backpressure, failover and hedge isolation with bounded fixtures. Align recovery test license headers with the project template.
Return errors for non-null native records that cannot be decoded instead of silently dropping them. Preserve malformed legacy-event handling and cover both Redis history storage layouts.
Expose provider data for SDK-based edits and rebuild the message projection before publishing a completed response or executing local tools.
Keep the existing Redis history decoding policy and log malformed events once per read.
