Problem

There was no way to preview how a font looks before clicking it in the caption font picker.

Fix

Hovering a font row now shows a small preview (Aa with the family name) below the list, without committing the change. The hovered family is stored in egui temp storage via hover_id and cleared when a selection is made. Only clicking a row commits the font via captions.setStyle.

Also extracts the existing inline filter predicate into a new font_name_matches() helper for testability.

Tests

  • font_search_filters_list_by_substring -- verifies the search helper
  • font_hover_preview_shows_correct_family -- verifies hover stores preview family without committing

Closes #2973

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a per-track search field for caption fonts. Results match font names by case-insensitive substring; an empty search shows all available families.
    • Hovering over a font previews it without applying the change. Clicking a font applies it and clears the preview and search field.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for font filtering and hover-versus-click preview behavior.

Test the picker interaction instead of duplicating its state.

This test never calls style_strip, creates an egui response, reads temporary storage, or verifies the queued captions.setStyle action. It passes even if the preview logic is removed. Replace it with an egui test that hovers a real font row and then verifies the click action.

Wire font_name_matches into the picker or remove it.

The function has no production caller. At Line 709, the picker still iterates every family without applying this predicate. The reported font filtering is therefore not implemented. CI also fails because cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings reports this function as dead code.

Normalize the search query before matching.

This expression lowercases only name. font_name_matches("Arial", "ARI") returns false, although the function promises a case-insensitive match. Lowercase query as well and add an uppercase-query assertion.

Keep the popup open when the search field is clicked.

craft_ui::ComboBox defaults to CloseOnClick, so clicking this field closes the popup before the user can type. Use CloseOnClickOutside and close the popup explicitly when a font is selected. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Allow keyboard focus to trigger the preview.

Render the sample in the hovered font.

The label interpolates the family name but does not apply that family to Aa. Every sample therefore uses the UI font, so users cannot compare fonts before selecting one. Render the sample using the hovered face, including registering it with egui if needed.

Thanks for the contribution! We're not taking this one as it stands. Several of this batch duplicate older open or already-landed PRs (for example, #2295's selectable status bar text landed in #2559, and #1997, #2973 and #3355 already have open PRs). Most of them have no tests, and #3873 adds an image from an unrelated project to the README. Please search for existing PRs before opening one, keep each PR to its one issue, and add a test that fails before the change.
