codecs: the rayon deadlock test fails 120 s after the last answered request - #3376
gop::tests::rayon_frame_requests_while_decoding_on_rayon_never_deadlock (filmcraft-codecs, changed in #3241) waited 120 s at a time and checked for progress only when a wait ran out. When the requests stopped just after one was answered at the start of a wait, the next check still saw progress, and the test reported the deadlock about 240 s after the last answer.
wait_while_answered polls every second and fails once 120 s have passed since the answered count last grew. The test reports "frame requests deadlocked after N frames" as before.
Tests:
gop::tests::a_stall_right_after_an_answer_is_reported_once_the_limit_has_passed (new): with a 2 s limit, one answer after 50 ms and none after it, the stall is reported between 2 s and 3 s after the answer. With the previous waiting logic it fails: "the stall was reported 3.9387189s after the answer".
cargo fmt --all -- --check and cargo clippy -p filmcraft-codecs --all-targets -- -D warnings: ok.
On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at 8fda2f2 with #3225, #2386, #2138 and #1744 merged in (they fix tests that fail or stop on main on Windows), with RUST_TEST_THREADS=4:
CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci: fmt, clippy, test, doctest, layers, assets and wasm passed. The test step ran 108 test binaries with 3,871 passed, 0 failed and 47 ignored; 8 doctests passed.
After merging main at 8d925e9d (the test now lives in crates/codecs/src/gop/tests.rs), 9785fb32 was checked with cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p filmcraft-codecs --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test -p filmcraft-codecs gop (28 passed). The cargo xtask ci run above was on the earlier head.

Tests
Improved coverage for detecting prolonged stalls in frame-request processing, with timeout behavior measured from the latest completed request.

rayon_frame_requests_while_decoding_on_rayon_never_deadlock waited 120 s
at a time and checked for progress only when a wait ran out. When the
requests stopped just after one was answered at the start of a wait, the
next check still saw progress, and the test reported the deadlock about
240 s after the last answer.
- wait_while_answered polls every second and fails once 120 s have
passed since the answered count last grew.
- a_stall_right_after_an_answer_is_reported_once_the_limit_has_passed
checks it with a 2 s limit: one answer after 50 ms, then none.
The deadlock test uses a 120-second no-progress limit. The helper polls the completion channel and resets its timer when the completed-frame count increases. A new test checks the timeout after one completed answer.
The timeout test may intermittently fail on busy CI workers; make its timing deterministic before merging.

Systems and components
observed — crates (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.
Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in crates/codecs/src/gop/tests.rs: The deadlock test now delegates waiting to wait_while_answered with a 120-second no-progress limit and reports the returned completed-frame count on failure. Previously, each fixed 120-second timeout required the count to increase or panicked.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/codecs/src/gop/tests.rs: Added wait_while_answered: it polls the completion channel every limit / 120, succeeds when the channel receives a message, and returns the current count if it has not increased for limit since the last increase or the call began. A disconnected channel still panics.
observed — Modified behavior in crates/codecs/src/gop/tests.rs: Added a test that increments the completed-frame count after a short delay without sending on the completion channel, then verifies the helper returns Err(1) at least limit and less than limit * 3 / 2 after that increment.
Reliability and maintainability

What it does: test-only change in codecs/src/gop.rs. The rayon deadlock test now uses wait_while_answered, which polls every limit/120 and fails once limit has passed since the answered count last grew. Before, a stall right after an answer was reported about 2x the limit later.
Checked: last_answer is reset only when the count grows, so the deadline is measured from the last progress. Ok returns, Disconnected still panics, and the helper takes the limit as a parameter so the new test can use 2 s. The new test's bounds (waited >= limit and < 1.5x limit) match the polling granularity.
Not verified: I did not run the tests. The upper bound in the new test depends on timing, and a very loaded runner could flake it, though the 1 s margin is comfortable. The approval rests on the hosted checks being green at this head.
Merged main (8d925e9d) into the branch. main moved the gop tests to crates/codecs/src/gop/tests.rs, so the test change now lives there; the diff against main is that one file, +37 -6, as before. cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p filmcraft-codecs --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo test -p filmcraft-codecs gop (28 passed) pass on 9785fb32.

Make the timeout regression test independent of wall-clock scheduling.
wait_while_answered starts its timer when it observes done increase. If the test thread is descheduled after that observation, waited can exceed limit * 3 / 2 even when the helper reports at the configured no-progress limit. The 50 ms sleep is not a startup handshake, so the answering thread can also increment done before wait_while_answered starts. The channel is read only after the timeout and does not synchronize test startup.
Use a controllable clock and an explicit handshake that starts the stall after wait_while_answered is running. Assert the logical timeout instead of a wall-clock upper bound.

Thanks for this contribution! It overlaps with #3385 (the rayon deadlock test), which covers the same area, so we are holding both until we decide which approach to take, rather than landing either one now. We will follow up here.
