env merges per key, but envRaw is a list, and a values file that sets it replaces the whole list. A layered values file, or a chart that depends on this one (netbird-ee in #66), can now set a default in env and let users point that one key at a Secret without touching the other entries.
netbird.envEntry renders one entry for management, signal and relay (netbird.env) and for the dashboard (netbird.dashboardEnv). The dashboard now sets its env keys over the generated ones one by one instead of using mergeOverwrite, so a map can replace a generated string.
A map with anything other than valueFrom fails the render.
Every example renders the same as before, apart from the bcrypt salt on the owner password hash, which changes on every render anyway.
tests/render.sh check 23 covers backends, the dashboard and the rejected map.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Environment variables in the NetBird Helm chart can now reference Kubernetes Secret keys, including for dashboard settings.
Layered configuration can replace an individual literal environment variable with a Secret reference without changing other entries.
Invalid environment variable map formats now produce a clear rendering error.
Documentation
Added examples and clarified how environment variable values are combined and how env differs from envRaw.

Walkthrough
Environment entries in the chart can now use literal values or valueFrom maps. Dashboard entries use the shared renderer. The documentation describes accepted values and merge behavior, and render checks cover secret references and invalid maps.
netbird.envEntry renders literal values or maps containing only valueFrom. netbird.env uses the helper. The documentation describes accepted value shapes and per-key merging.
Dashboard integration and render checks charts/netbird/templates/dashboard/_helpers.tpl, charts/netbird/tests/render.sh
Dashboard entries use netbird.envEntry after existing shadowed entries are removed. Render checks cover secret references for management and dashboard, and reject an invalid signal environment map.
netbirdio/helms#58: Introduced the netbird.env rendering path that this change extends.
netbirdio/helms#54: Introduced the split chart environment rendering and shared helper extended here.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 43444
Some layered configuration changes can block deployment, while a null Secret reference can silently yield an empty value. These narrow cases warrant owner awareness.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 43444
Secret-backed environment values use capabilities already available through other chart settings, without an evident increase in deployment privileges. Remaining risk concerns configuration validation and compatibility when layering values or reverting to an older chart.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A configuration error in the shared renderer can affect any of the three backend workloads and the dashboard when they use the new form. The new path does not itself establish additional Secret-reading authority: chart configuration could already supply equivalent sources through envRaw or envFromSecret.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Backend reserved-name and duplicate checks execute before entry rendering and still cover env, envRaw, and envFromSecret together. Dashboard overrides retain their existing ability to replace generated authentication settings, while envRaw and envFromSecret continue to shadow entries in the assembled map.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Unsupported outer map shapes fail rendering with the variable name, rather than silently becoming structured environment entries. Nested source validation remains outside this helper, so this control should not be interpreted as guaranteeing a deployable or correctly resolved credential configuration.

Explanation
The title "feat(netbird): env values take valueFrom" matches the main change. The PR lets an env entry be a map that contains only valueFrom, as well as a string. The raw summary confirms the new netbird.envEntry template, the dashboard env merge change, and the render tests for valueFrom.secretKeyRef. The title is specific and concise, and it names the chart and the feature.

Autofix · Keep fixing CodeRabbit findings and required CI, and resolving merge conflicts
A rabbit checks each env entry with care. A secret key now finds its way there. Plain strings keep their quoted place. Bad maps meet an error in the render race. The dashboard joins the same path with grace.

An `env` value is a string or a map with only `valueFrom`. Unlike `envRaw`, a list that replaces as a whole, `env` merges per key, so one layered values file, or a chart that depends on this one, can turn a default literal into a Secret reference without touching other entries.

Document nested selector merging.
Helm also merges maps inside valueFrom. If a base file sets secretKeyRef and an override sets configMapKeyRef, both remain and Kubernetes rejects the Deployment. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Document that the override must clear the old selector, for example with secretKeyRef: null.

Reject a null valueFrom.
env.FOO.valueFrom: null passes this check. Kubernetes accepts it as an empty environment value, so a dashboard credential can silently become empty instead of coming from a Secret. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Require valueFrom to be a non-empty object. Based on learnings: prefer JSON Schema over template-level fail validation.
