CWE-918 (SSRF), CWE-200 (Exposure of Sensitive Information)
Affected
NewStreamableHTTP, NewSSE (redirects and the endpoint event), and the default client in NewOAuthHandler
Fixed version
None yet. The advisory matches every release up to and including v1.5.0
Problem
NewStreamableHTTP, NewSSE and NewOAuthHandler create an http.Client with no CheckRedirect. When a server answers with a 3xx, net/http follows Location to any host and:
copies every custom header (WithHTTPHeaders / WithHeaders, header-func values such as API keys) onto the redirected request,
keeps Authorization, including the OAuth bearer token, when the new host is a subdomain,
resends the request body on 307/308. For the transports that is the JSON-RPC message. For the OAuth handler it is the token, refresh or registration form, with client_secret, the authorization code or the refresh token.
The SSE transport has a related gap. It checked the endpoint event against the connection's host only, so an https:// connection could be told to post headers, the bearer token and bodies to http:// on the same host.
A malicious or compromised server can use either path to reach internal addresses (for example http://169.254.169.254/) or collect the client's credentials on a host it controls.
Fix
client/transport/redirect.go:
Client
Policy
NewStreamableHTTP, NewSSE defaults
sameOriginRedirectPolicy: follow only to the same scheme, host and port, at most 10 hops
NewOAuthHandler default
oauthRedirectPolicy: token, refresh and registration requests (non-GET) are same-origin only. Metadata discovery (GET) may cross origins, since issuers legitimately do that, but never from https to http
SSE endpoint event
must match the connection's full origin, not just the host
Scheme and host: lowercased ASCII only. strings.EqualFold / ToLower would treat K (Kelvin sign) as k and İ as i, but net/http dials those as different hosts.
IP literals: written in canonical form, so [0:0::1] matches [::1]. The IPv6 zone keeps its case, because %eth0 and %ETH0 can be different interfaces. An IPv4-mapped address ([::ffff:127.0.0.1]) stays distinct from 127.0.0.1.
Port: a missing port becomes the scheme's default, and numeric ports are normalized, so :0443 matches :443 the way net/http dials it.
Go's own stripping of sensitive headers on redirect is untouched. It still applies to every redirect the policy allows.
New sentinel errors, usable with errors.Is: ErrCrossOriginRedirect, ErrTooManyRedirects, ErrInsecureRedirect.
Type of Change
Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
MCP spec compatibility implementation
Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
Documentation update
Code refactoring (no functional changes)
Performance improvement
Tests only (no functional changes)
Other (please describe):
Breaking only for setups that depend on redirects this PR now refuses. With the default clients, these fail:
a server endpoint that redirects to a different origin, including http→https;
an OAuth token, refresh or registration endpoint that redirects to a different origin;
OAuth discovery that redirects from https to http.
Such callers can pass their own http.Client.

Tests
client/transport/redirect_test.go:
sameOriginRedirectPolicy table (32 cases):
accepted: path change, explicit or empty default ports, leading-zero ports, host and scheme case, IPv6 equivalent and full/compressed literals, IPv6 hex case, same IPv6 zone;
rejected: other host, subdomain, parent domain, other port, other IPv6 address or port, IPv6 zone that differs in case, is another interface or is added, IPv4-mapped vs IPv4, scheme downgrade and upgrade, cloud metadata IP, loopback, user@host trick, İ/K folding;
the redirect limit returns ErrTooManyRedirects and not ErrCrossOriginRedirect.
oauthRedirectPolicy table: discovery across origins, discovery over plain http, discovery downgrade, discovery redirect limit, token request same origin / other origin / subdomain / downgrade.
StreamableHTTP:
SendRequest refuses a cross-origin 301, 302, 303, 307 and 308 without contacting the target;
SendNotification does too;
WithHTTPTimeout keeps the policy;
a same-origin 308 still works and resends headers and body;
a custom client keeps its own policy.
SSE:
Start refuses a cross-origin 301, 302, 303, 307 and 308;
an endpoint event with a scheme downgrade, another host or another port is rejected and nothing is posted;
a same-origin endpoint is accepted;
a custom client keeps its own policy.
OAuth:
RefreshToken, run through the handler with real metadata discovery, refuses a cross-origin 307 or 308 on the token endpoint. The redirect target receives nothing: neither the refresh token nor client_secret;
the default client refuses the same for a direct token POST;
a cross-origin discovery GET is still followed.
I also removed the policy and the endpoint check temporarily: every integration test above fails without them.
go test ./... -race and go vet pass. golangci-lint run (2.15.0) reports nothing in the changed files.
#1190 covers the same advisory for StreamableHTTP and SSE. This PR includes everything in it (same-origin policy, SSE endpoint origin check, ASCII-only host comparison, ErrTooManyRedirects), and adds:
OAuth credential requests:fix(transport): refuse cross-origin redirects in default HTTP clients #1190 leaves the OAuth handler on Go's default policy. That means a token, refresh or registration POST answered with a cross-origin 307/308 still resends client_secret, the authorization code or the refresh token in the body. This PR keeps those requests on the same origin, and keeps discovery redirects working except https→http.
Origin normalization: leading-zero ports and equivalent IPv6 literals compare equal instead of being rejected as different origins.
More coverage: 301 and 303, SendNotification, WithHTTPTimeout, an SSE endpoint on another port, IPv6, parent-domain and userinfo cases, and the Kelvin-sign fold.
Note
The advisory's reference link to #1164 points to an unrelated issue (JSON member names matched case-insensitively).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Default HTTP clients now follow redirects only within the same origin and stop after 10 redirects.
OAuth discovery may follow cross-origin redirects but blocks redirects from HTTPS to an insecure scheme. Other OAuth requests follow redirects only within the same origin.
SSE endpoints must match the base URL’s scheme, host, and port.
Default OAuth clients use a 30-second timeout.
Custom HTTP clients retain their configured redirect behavior.
The default http.Client in NewStreamableHTTP, NewSSE and NewOAuthHandler
had no CheckRedirect policy. A server answering with a 3xx could send
the client to any host, and net/http copied the configured custom
headers (and the Authorization header for subdomains) onto the
redirected request, along with the body for 307/308. That allowed SSRF
and leaked API keys and OAuth bearer tokens (GO-2026-6911, OWASP
A10:2021 SSRF / A07:2021 credential exposure).
The default clients now follow a redirect only to the same scheme, host
and port, up to 10 hops, and otherwise fail with ErrCrossOriginRedirect
before the new location is contacted. Clients supplied through
WithHTTPBasicClient, WithHTTPClient or OAuthConfig.HTTPClient keep their
own policy.

Walkthrough
Default OAuth, SSE, and Streamable HTTP clients now use redirect policies. The policies limit redirect chains and apply origin checks based on request type. SSE endpoint validation checks scheme, host, and port. Caller-supplied clients retain their own redirect policy.
The default policy allows redirects only within the initial request’s normalized origin. OAuth GET and HEAD requests may redirect across origins, except from HTTPS to a non-HTTPS scheme. Other OAuth requests must remain same-origin. Both policies stop chains at 10 redirects. Origin normalization handles case, IP literals, numeric ports, and default HTTP and HTTPS ports.
Apply policies to clients and validate SSE endpoints client/transport/oauth.go, client/transport/sse.go, client/transport/streamable_http.go
Default OAuth, SSE, and Streamable HTTP clients use the new policies. SSE accepts advertised endpoints only when scheme, host, and port match the base URL. Documentation describes default and caller-supplied client behavior.
Tests cover policy decisions, redirect limits, default-client behavior across OAuth, SSE, and Streamable HTTP, endpoint validation, request data on same-origin redirects, and caller-supplied client behavior.

…ests
- Compare origins with ASCII-only lowercasing. strings.EqualFold matched
"K" (Kelvin sign) with "k" and "İ" with "i", which net/http dials as
different hosts.
- Normalize numeric ports, so ":0443" is the same origin as ":443".
- Return ErrTooManyRedirects when a chain reaches 10 hops instead of an
unwrapped error.
- Check the SSE endpoint event against the full origin. It compared only
the host, so an https connection could be told to post headers, the
OAuth token and bodies to http on the same host.
- Give the OAuth handler's default client its own policy: token, refresh
and registration requests (which carry client_secret and codes in the
body, resent on 307/308) only follow same-origin redirects; metadata
discovery may still be redirected across origins but never from https
to http (ErrInsecureRedirect).
Thanks for linking #1190. Both PRs fix GO-2026-6911 the same way for StreamableHTTP and SSE, and this PR now includes everything #1190 has. That covers the same-origin policy, the SSE endpoint origin check, ASCII-only host comparison and ErrTooManyRedirects.
There is one gap left open in #1190, and it's the main reason to prefer this one. #1190 keeps the OAuth handler's default client on Go's default redirect policy. Token, refresh and dynamic-registration requests are POSTs whose form body carries client_secret, the authorization code or the refresh token. net/http resends that body on a 307/308, so an authorization server, or anything able to answer for it, can still redirect those credentials to another host. Go's stripping of the Authorization header doesn't help here, because the secrets are in the body.
This PR gives the OAuth default client its own policy:
non-GET requests (token, refresh, registration) only follow same-origin redirects;
GET requests for metadata discovery can still be redirected across origins, as real issuers do, but never from https to http.
TestOAuthHandler_DefaultClientRefusesCrossOriginTokenRedirect covers this. The same test fails on #1190's code.
Smaller differences:
leading-zero ports (:0443) are normalized instead of being rejected;
the tests also cover 301 and 303, SendNotification, WithHTTPTimeout, an SSE endpoint on another port, IPv6, and the parent-domain and userinfo cases.
I also removed the policy temporarily: every integration test fails without it.
If you'd rather merge #1190, I'm happy to rebase the OAuth part on top of it as a follow-up.

Test redirects through the OAuth handler.
The redirect test calls the client directly, so it cannot catch a handler path that bypasses that client. Add a RefreshToken test with a 307 or 308 cross-origin redirect, and assert ErrCrossOriginRedirect and zero requests to the destination.

Exercise the redirect through OAuthHandler.RefreshToken instead of the
client alone, so a handler path that bypasses the default client would
be caught. Without the policy the refresh token and client secret reach
the redirect target.
Addressed the nitpick from the latest review in c7131c9. TestOAuthHandler_RefreshTokenRefusesCrossOriginRedirect now goes through OAuthHandler.RefreshToken instead of the client alone. The auth server serves real metadata, and its token endpoint answers with a cross-origin 307 or 308. The test asserts ErrCrossOriginRedirect and zero requests to the target. With the OAuth policy removed, the test fails: the refresh token and client_secret reach the target.
