Fixes #288.

Problem

keepass::key depended directly on linux-keyutils, so the server could only run on Linux (or in Docker), and linux_keyutils::KeyError leaked into the HTTP layer's error handling.

Design

  • SecretKey's public API is unchanged; the backing store is now a private module selected at compile time:
    • linux: the existing kernel keyring implementation (unchanged behavior, including timeouts and permissions)
    • other platforms: an in-memory store — secrets zeroized on drop, per-key expiry refreshed on retrieve, expired entries pruned on store. Weaker than a kernel keyring (keys live in process memory) but it makes native macOS/Windows development possible; documented in the module
  • new crate-local KeyUnavailableError replaces linux_keyutils::KeyError in the HTTP layer (missing/expired/revoked → treated as 'db closed' → 401, everything else → 500), removing the platform type leak
  • linux-keyutils moved to [target.'cfg(target_os = "linux")'.dependencies]

Testing

  • cargo test on Linux: 11/11 — the keyring path via the existing key_roundtrip, plus the memory store (compiled under cfg(test) on all platforms) gets roundtrip/revoke/expiry tests
  • cargo check --target aarch64-apple-darwin fails only on pre-existing C build-script deps (ring, zstd-sys) that need an Apple toolchain — unrelated to this change

Summary by cubic

Abstracted key storage: Linux keeps the kernel keyring; non-Linux platforms use an in-memory store. This enables native macOS/Windows runs and removes linux_keyutils errors from the HTTP layer.

  • New Features

    • Compile-time backend: keyring on Linux; in-memory on others.
    • In-memory store: zeroized on drop, TTL refreshed on read, expired keys pruned on write.
    • Added crate-local KeyUnavailableError; HTTP maps missing/expired/revoked to 401, others to 500.
  • Dependencies

    • Moved linux-keyutils to [target.'cfg(target_os = "linux")'.dependencies].

Written for commit dd8de9b. Summary will update on new commits.

Review in cubic

Updated after AI review: keyring retrieval now reads the actual payload length via read_to_vec instead of assuming 32 bytes; regression test added.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added platform-specific secure key storage, using the Linux keyring where available and an in-memory store on other platforms.
    • Secrets of varying lengths are now supported without truncation.
    • Keys automatically expire, refresh when accessed, and can be revoked.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of unavailable, expired, or revoked keys.
    • Database access now correctly reports unavailable keys as unauthorized.
    • Key cleanup now handles already-unavailable keys gracefully.

Walkthrough

Key storage now uses the Linux kernel keyring on Linux and a zeroizing in-memory store on other targets and in tests. SecretKey delegates storage, retrieval, and revocation to the selected backend. A public KeyUnavailableError represents missing, expired, and revoked keys. Linux keyring retrieval supports variable-length secrets. Server routes now handle the shared unavailable-key error for database access and cleanup.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 37106

The change adds a non-Linux in-memory key store while retaining the Linux keyring, but zero or sub-second timeouts can expire keys differently across platforms, potentially causing inconsistent authentication behavior. The PR is mergeable with explicit owner awareness or follow-up on this bounded cross-platform difference.

Explanation

The changes satisfy issue #288 by selecting a Linux kernel keyring backend and a zeroizing in-memory backend for non-Linux platforms. The Linux-only dependency configuration and backend abstraction support native macOS and Windows execution.

The key store was hard-wired to linux-keyutils, making native runs on
macOS/Windows impossible. The kernel keyring remains the store on
linux; other platforms get an in-memory store (zeroized on drop, with
expiry). linux-keyutils is now a linux-only target dependency, and the
http layer matches on a crate-local KeyUnavailableError instead of
linux_keyutils::KeyError.

Keyring retrieval reads the actual payload length via read_to_vec
instead of assuming 32 bytes, so secrets of any length roundtrip
unchanged on both store implementations.

linux_keyutils Rust Key::set_timeout KEYCTL_SET_TIMEOUT zero timeout contract

💡 Result:

In the Linux key retention service, the KEYCTL_SET_TIMEOUT operation is used to set or clear an expiration timer on a key [1][2]. The contract for using a zero value as the timeout is explicitly defined to clear any existing expiration timer [3][4][2]. When Key::set_timeout (or the underlying keyctl_set_timeout system call) is invoked with a timeout value of 0, the kernel removes the previously set expiration timer, effectively making the key persist indefinitely (provided it is not otherwise revoked or removed) [4][1][2]. Key technical points regarding this contract: - Zeroing the timeout: Specifying 0 as the timeout value explicitly cancels the expiration timer [4][1][2]. This behavior is consistent across both the raw kernel system call interface and the common Rust wrappers (such as linux-keyutils and keyutils) [3][5][6]. - Prerequisites: To set or clear a timeout, the caller must have setattr permission on the target key or hold an instantiation authorization token [3][6][2]. - Restrictions: This operation cannot be applied to keys that are already revoked, expired, or negatively instantiated [3][6][2]. Additionally, if a key is marked with the KEY_FLAG_KEEP flag, the kernel will prevent modification of its timeout [7]. - Verification: The only way to discover the current timeout of a key is by inspecting the /proc/keys file [3][6][2]. Sources: [3], [4], [6], [1], [7], [2]

Preserve zero-duration expiry semantics.

When timeout is zero or less than one second, timeout.as_secs() passes 0 to linux_keyutils::Key::set_timeout at lines 16 and 31. Linux interprets 0 as clearing the expiry timer. The key can therefore remain valid indefinitely, while memory.rs rejects zero-duration keys immediately. Apply an explicit cross-backend policy that does not pass 0 for immediate expiry, and add a Linux regression test.

Rebased onto master and pushed one commit on top: the three lock().unwrap() calls now say what a panic there means, and the module comment spells out that the pages are not locked, so a key can reach swap or a core dump. That is inherent on the platforms this targets, but it should be written down rather than implied.

Verified on this branch: the key tests pass (including the memory store roundtrip, revoke and expiry), the clippy gate is clean, and the e2e suite is green.
