Id like this PR to cut out the bleak wrapper and timeout change, and then handle that part seperately. I feel the bleak wrap is a bit of a hack. In this version set retires to 3 but keep any of the other fixes in here unrelated to the bleak wrapper. |

…links on failed session setup connect() now makes 4 attempts bounded to 10s each (was 2 x the connector's fixed 20s), keeping the ~40s worst case while letting habluetooth re-pick a path on each attempt. Failed session setup over an established link (notify setup, handshake timeout/rejection, pairing, wake_up(wait=True)) now disconnects before raising; an infotainment timeout on a car VCSEC reports asleep keeps the link.
…attempts Per review, the BleakClient subclass that pinned a shorter per-attempt timeout moves to a separate change. Keep link teardown on failed session setup.

Summary
Bluetooth connects now try up to 3 connection paths (was 2), and a failed session setup no longer leaves a half-open link.
Field evidence (Home Assistant 2026.10.0b0, tesla-fleet-api 1.17.2, habluetooth debug logs):
connect()stopped after 2 attempts. With three paths available (hci0 at RSSI -59, the garage-door-v2 ESPHome proxy at -62, the claude-dial proxy at -90), attempt 1 went to hci0 and failed instantly, attempt 2 went to garage-door-v2 and timed out after 20 s, and the flow gave up before trying a third path. After a failed handshake the link also appeared to stay half-open, so later retries kept timing out.1. Connect budget: 3 attempts (was 2)
DEFAULT_CONNECT_ATTEMPTS = 3. Under habluetooth, each attempt picks the best path again, so an adapter plus two proxies can all be tried in one connect.2. Failed session setup disconnects the link
_drop_link()stops keepalive and runs a bounded (5 s), best-effortclient.disconnect(). It never raises, so the original error is the one that surfaces. It is called on failure from:connect(): any failure afterestablish_connection, including non-Bleak exceptions, which previously left the client connected._sendVehicleSecurity, and the publichandshakeVehicleSecurity();handshakeInfotainment();pair(), and a failedwake_up(wait=True).Exemptions:
SigningDisabled: a passive listener keeps its held link.Commands._handshakeand session-info authentication are not touched; a separate change owns those.3. Error types are unchanged
Connect failures are still
BluetoothTransportError, with bleak-retry-connector's typed error as__cause__. Tests drive the realestablish_connectionloop and check thatBleakNotFoundError(all attempts timed out → "out of range") andBleakOutOfConnectionSlotsErrorsurvive.Known limit (habluetooth path ranking)
Path ranking belongs to habluetooth. It ranks paths by RSSI. Each past failure costs only
0.51 × (RSSI gap between the top two paths), and that count only resets on a successful connect. A much weaker path that does work (the captain's -94 proxy) is therefore reached faster across repeated connects than before. Reaching it within a singleconnect()is not guaranteed.Tests
tests/test_ble_connect_failover.py:max_attempts=2;tests/test_ble_connect_retry_budget.py: the default is at least 3 and still below bleak-retry-connector's own default of 4.uv run pytest tests: 890 passed. pyright strict: 0 errors. ruff: clean.Changelog
connect()/connect_if_needed()now make up to 3 connection attempts by default (was 2), so Home Assistant can try another connection path before giving up.wake_up(wait=True)) now disconnects before raising, so the vehicle isn't left with a half-open link.No release in this PR.
