timeline: Track Select Forward/Backward selects and moves the captions with the clips (#3388) - #3407
The Track Select Forward / Backward tool selected only clips, and a drag with it moved only clips. Every caption after the pointer stayed where it was, so the subtitles ended up out of sync with their audio.
Selection (crates/ui-egui/src/panels/timeline.rs): a click with the tool now also selects the captions on its side of the pointer (Forward: those that end after it; Backward: those that start before it). Captions on a locked caption track are left out, and Shift keeps to the clicked track, so it picks no captions, as before.
Move (crates/engine/src/commands.rs): timeline.move takes an optional captions: [id]. They move by the same offset as the first listed clip (including the shift that keeps clips from going before zero), in the same undo step as the clips. The call is all or nothing: if the captions cannot go as far as the clips (they would overlap a caption that stays, or sit on a locked track) it fails and nothing moves, so captions never drift off their dialogue. captions cannot be combined with copy.
The timeline sends captions only when the drag was made with a Track Select tool, and not for an Option-drag copy. Other drags behave as before.
docs/control-protocol.md documents the new parameter.
Not changed, to keep this on the issue: Option-drag copies still copy only clips, and a Selection-tool drag after a Track Select click still moves only clips (the captions stay selected but do not follow).
Tests
Reproduced first: the new UI test below failed before the fix (clips moved, the caption after the pointer stayed), and passes after it.
track_select_drag_ui::a_drag_with_track_select_forward_moves_the_captions_after_the_pointer_with_the_clips: three captions (before the pointer, two after); after a drag the later ones moved by the clips' offset, the earlier one stayed, it is one undo step, and one undo restores clips and captions.
track_select_drag_ui::track_select_picks_the_captions_on_its_side_of_the_pointer: Backward, Forward, Shift, and a locked caption track.
captions::tests::timeline_move_takes_the_listed_captions_along_in_one_undo_step: duplicates in captions are moved once, unlisted captions stay, one undo step.
captions::tests::timeline_move_with_captions_that_cannot_follow_changes_nothing: an overlap, copy, an unknown caption id and a locked caption track each refuse the move and leave clips, captions and undo history unchanged.
cargo test for filmcraft-engine, filmcraft-ui-egui, filmcraft-automation, filmcraft-cli and filmcraft: 1664 passed, 0 failed, 8 ignored.
cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets: ok.
Not run: the rest of the workspace tests (the change is in the engine and the UI crate, and the only crates that depend on those are the ones tested above), cargo xtask wasm, and the desktop app itself; the drag is covered by the headless UI test, not tried by hand.
Overlap with open PRs
#2232 (Track Select skips locked tracks) edits the same selection expression in timeline.rs, and #1962 (box selection includes captions) also deals with caption selection. I did not build on either; whichever lands second will need a small rebase.
AI disclosure

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Track Select Forward and Backward now include matching captions on unlocked caption tracks. Shift continues to limit selection to the clicked track.
Moving clips with selected captions moves them by the same offset in one undoable action. Caption moves are refused if they would overlap other captions or involve a locked track.
Documentation
Updated control protocol guidance to cover moving captions with clips, including applicable restrictions.
timeline.move now accepts caption IDs and moves them with clips in one transaction. Track Select Forward/Backward selects eligible captions and includes them in non-copy moves. Engine and UI tests cover caption movement, selection, overlap rejection, locked tracks, and undo.
timeline.move accepts caption IDs, deduplicates them, and moves them by the first planned clip’s effective offset. The transaction rejects unsupported or blocked moves. Tests cover successful moves, rejected moves, and undo. The protocol documentation describes the new parameter and result.
Track Select caption selection and drag crates/ui-egui/src/panels/timeline/interact.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/track_select_drag_ui.rs
Track Select Forward/Backward adds eligible captions to the selection. Non-copy Track Select moves pass selected caption IDs to timeline.move. UI tests cover selection, movement, and undo.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 9a8c7
Some caption moves can leave subtitles out of sync with clips or report captions as moved without validating them. Resolve these cases before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9a8c7
The change remains scoped to the open timeline and preserves one-step undo. However, insert-mode movement can shift selected captions twice or split them before moving them, breaking synchronization despite a successful operation. No new access or privilege path was identified.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Insert-mode Track Select gives two operations responsibility for selected caption positions. move_items first opens an insertion gap on unlocked sync-locked caption tracks, shifting later captions and splitting straddling captions. The command then explicitly moves the original selected caption IDs by the clip offset. A successful edit can therefore commit an additional caption displacement or move only one split fragment, violating the promised shared offset. Transaction rollback contains errors but does not reject this logically inconsistent success; undo remains available. The gap behavior predates the PR, but its composition with explicit caption movement is new.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new mutation path is bounded to the active sequence in the current session. Caption lookup does not search other projects or sequences. The observed state-transition risk affects selected captions and insertion-gap effects on unlocked sync-locked caption tracks, not a demonstrated tenant or service boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — No new caption-editing privilege was identified: authorized command callers could already move caption IDs through captions.move. The new combined path retains sequence ownership and nonzero-move lock enforcement. Its zero-offset validation omission does not demonstrate a locked-caption write.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #3388 is an active direct target. The UI change selects captions after the pointer for Forward and before the pointer for Backward, skips locked caption tracks, and preserves Shift track restriction. Track Select moves pass selected caption IDs to timeline.move unless the drag copies. The engine applies the first clip offset, including the zero-boundary adjustment, in the same edit transaction. Added tests cover selection, movement, undo, duplicates, overlap, locked tracks, unknown IDs, and copy.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within issue #3388. Engine validation, UI tests, caption tests, and control-protocol documentation support the new caption selection and movement behavior. The changes preserve the stated non-objectives: Option-drag copies and Selection-tool drags do not move captions.

Reject malformed captions entries before moving clips.
filter_map silently removes invalid entries. A mixed array can move the clips while omitting some requested captions. Reject a present non-array captions value or any non-numeric array entry. Keep an absent field as an empty list.

Validate caption IDs for zero-offset moves.
If a clip changes track without changing time, caption_delta is zero and this condition skips move_captions. The move can therefore succeed with a nonexistent or locked caption ID. Lines 505-506 also report that ID under captions, although no caption moved. Validate the supplied IDs even when the offset is zero, and report only captions that moved.

…s with the clips (storytold#3388)
The tool selected only clips, and a drag moved only clips, so every caption
after the pointer was left behind and out of sync with its audio.
Clicking with the tool now also selects the unlocked captions on its side of
the pointer (Shift keeps to the clicked track). timeline.move takes an
optional captions list that moves by the same offset as the clips in the
same undo step; if the captions cannot go as far as the clips the call fails
and nothing moves.

Prevent a second caption shift during Track Select insert moves.
If the user Cmd-drags with Track Select on a sync-locked caption track, timeline.move receives both insert: true and the selected caption IDs. The insert edit already shifts captions at or after the insertion point. The subsequent explicit caption move shifts those selected captions again. They can end out of sync with the clips, or the move can fail. Coordinate the insert and explicit caption moves so each selected caption receives the intended final offset once.
