feat: link saved EffectCraft compositions through project adapters (#388) - #3201
Saving an EffectCraft composition currently requires manually rendering and replacing a movie in FilmCraft. This PR adds a persistent saved-project reference: import an .ecproj, choose a composition, and let a background worker refresh its full-quality transparent source after saved edits while retaining the existing timeline item's placement, trim and effects.
Refs #388 and #1024. This is a reviewable prototype of the CLI-first approach, not a claim that the maintainers have approved the process-versus-library architecture. Coordination plan: #388 (comment)
Implementation
Application-neutral, versioned ProjectLink descriptors and a ProjectAdapter boundary. EffectCraft is the first adapter; a synthetic still/artboard adapter exercises the shared lifecycle in tests. PhotoCraft and VectorCraft adapters are follow-ups.
File > Dynamic Link > Import EffectCraft Composition opens a centered styled modal with folders, project files and composition selection. Renderer setup and existing-link actions (refresh/cancel, relink, bake/restore) live in expandable sections. File > Import also accepts single-composition .ecproj files after renderer enablement.
Active EffectCraft links use its composition glyph and pink (#E0368F) for Project label swatches and timeline clips, with ordinary selection outlines. The reused open-source glyph is credited in ATTRIBUTION.md.
Routine cached checks keep “Watching for saved changes” and its geometry stable. Only an actual render shows changing progress/spinner feedback.
Background ProRes 4444 RGBA rendering, serialized per session, with cancellation, timeout/output bounds, input/dependency hashes, complete-file publication and last-good-cache retention. Source changes during a render discard the result. Explicit Refresh invalidates environmental inputs too.
Export checks only links reachable from the selected sequence, including nested sequences and subclip parents. Its guarded worker computes fresh saved-source revisions and reopens used caches, requiring video before encoding or writing caption sidecars. Unused links do not block export; failed asynchronous preflight appears in job status. Bake writes a new ordinary media file, keeping a restorable link.
Export mode persistently names an unconfigured linked composition and offers Configure linked projects to open renderer setup. The hint checks only reachable, unbaked links; it never authorizes an executable automatically.
An unchanged render cache reopens a previously cached offline source and clears stale missing-media state rather than reporting Up to date while retaining the slate. Normal successful cached checks remain quiet.
Full content hashing stays automatic on the background worker at a five-second cadence. Export preflight no longer hashes on the interactive caller; it never substitutes size/mtime-only revision checks.
Project::max_id reserves stale project-link keys to prevent reuse after loading. The composition picker is registered as a frontend-only menu action, rather than a successful engine no-op.
Schema 16 preserves link identity across save/reopen and prevents older readers from silently discarding links. Executables are not stored in project files or replayable journals.
Validation
Updated 27 October 2026 for visible export setup and offline-cache recovery.
Linked-project engine regressions, the export warning/setup regression, export UI/menu tests and all catalog checks pass. Recovery coverage removes and restores a cache file without changing its revision and verifies replacement of the offline source and removal of the missing-media entry.
Formatting, strict workspace/all-target Clippy, doctests, layers, assets and WASM pass. Formatting and strict Clippy were rerun after the recovery change.
Fresh local full-branch CodeRabbit reviews completed. Functional findings were corrected with regressions. The remaining cache placement/retention advisories describe an existing prototype limitation, now explicit in the guide as well as the scope below; automatic age-based deletion would need to account for saved-project and undo references.
Wgpu-rendered warning/setup testing and a separate native Windows Dev integration smoke test with generated media pass. The native test covers setup navigation, successful Export-button output and Write-mode preview preservation. Earlier opt-in testing with EffectCraft CLI from main eb5108786b90bf994a6abe4e6c0b2614c6aeaa29 verified saved updates, alpha, export and bake/restore; that synthetic external-renderer integration was not repeated for this UI/cache correction. The ordinary suite ignores that opt-in test. No private production media or private Dev changes are included in this PR.
Reproduce focused checks with:
cargo test -p filmcraft-engine project_links
cargo test -p filmcraft-project max_id_reserves_orphaned_project_link_keys
cargo test -p filmcraft-ui-egui project_links
cargo test -p filmcraft-ui-egui --test it linked_projects_dialog
cargo test -p filmcraft-ui-egui --test it dynamic_link_import
Scope limitations / review decisions
Saved edits and complete compositions; no unsaved-editor link, frame server, used-range optimization or template controls yet. Replace selected clips and Create New Composition are deferred.
Native process support only. Renderer setup is manual/session-only. Web and sandboxed packaging need a baked fallback or an approved host integration; no sandbox-escape permission is added.
Direct footage dependencies are hashed. Image sequences are refused; fonts, expression reads and other unlisted environmental resources require explicit Refresh. Dependency hashing and export preflight need performance work for large projects.
The cache lives in the OS temp directory, has no eviction budget or timeline render-bar integration, and is not packaged for handoff. Bake supports .mov files up to 128 MiB.
Source/object IDs are retained, but there is no suite-wide document UUID discovery. Relink is explicit. PhotoCraft/VectorCraft still need adapters and format-specific capability tests.
See docs/linked-projects.md for the contract, bounds and remaining work, and docs/examples/linked-project-demo.jsx for a procedural demo fixture. No private production media is included.
@KattKnight: your CLI-first proposal is the starting point; please flag any implementation already underway so this can be coordinated rather than duplicated. Maintainer feedback on the adapter boundary and the CLI transport is welcome before merge.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to e6f21
Queued exports can fail without the relevant renderer warning, and shared-machine users may be able to replace linked-render caches. Resolve the cache location before merging; correct the queue warning so it reflects queued exports.
Security architecture risk: High · up to e6f21
With a renderer enabled, a received project can trigger filesystem access outside the normal document-path restrictions, including network-share access on Windows. Render caches also lack enforced ownership when temporary storage is shared, allowing another local user to substitute media. Explicit renderer selection and export checks provide useful controls but do not close these boundaries.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: Persisted linked-project paths bypass the existing stored-document path policy. Once the renderer is enabled, background polling passes a document-controlled project path directly to native metadata and read operations; directly listed footage paths follow the same route. On Windows with outbound SMB available, an attacker-controlled UNC path can initiate network authentication before project validation succeeds. Authorizing an installed executable does not authorize every share named by subsequently loaded projects.
Medium · security · inferred: Cache integrity depends on unverified host filesystem ownership. On hosts with a shared temporary root, another local user can precreate or control the fixed cache directory. Revision-named files are then reused without owner, symlink, or rendered-content provenance checks. A valid substituted video can be accepted as the current render and pass export preflight, because the revision authenticates source inputs rather than the cached output bytes.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant exposure is the native desktop user's filesystem and network identity, plus linked media and exports that consume the cache. A malicious project author needs an enabled provider to reach the new automatic read path. Cache substitution instead requires local control of the cache location. The inspected paths do not establish service, tenant, or elevated-privilege access beyond the host process's authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A received FilmCraft project can supply an unbaked EffectCraft descriptor whose project_path names an attacker-controlled Windows share. With the provider enabled, polling reaches native metadata before JSON schema checks. A valid external project can likewise name a share as footage. This bypasses the pre-existing refusal of unrelated network paths and can trigger outbound authentication where host policy permits it; the runtime consequence was not exercised.
inferred — A local attacker controlling a precreated cache directory under shared temporary storage can supply a valid video at a computable revision path or replace an entry. Cache reuse treats its existence as a hit, and subsequent checks establish readability and source revision, not that the authorized renderer produced those bytes. The substituted content can therefore propagate into preview and final export without changing the linked source.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Documents cannot select the executable, unknown providers are not instantiated, and missing adapters block export. Native execution uses separate arguments without a shell and kills and reaps the direct child on cancellation or limit failure. Fresh export validation rejects changed revisions and missing or unreadable video caches. These controls do not apply the document-path resolver to linked inputs or establish cache ownership.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The state machine separates last-good preview availability from export readiness and rejects completions for changed descriptors. This contains ordinary render failure and stale-worker mutation. Cache retention remains unbounded across revisions and interrupted work, with private placement and cleanup explicitly deferred; directly listed dependencies also do not cover every environmental renderer input.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Preserve document origin for persisted link paths and apply the existing stored-document path policy before metadata, reads, hashing, or renderer invocation. Resolve dependencies against their external document while preserving network-share restrictions; distinguish explicit session-picked overrides from paths inherited from received documents.
proposed — Use a securely created, private per-user cache with verified ownership and restrictive permissions. Reject unexpected symlinks or foreign-owned entries, create render staging files exclusively, and publish without a check-then-rename race. Define retention around references held by saved projects and undo history rather than treating age alone as safe eviction.

Include project_links keys in Project::max_id.
A stale, unbaked link can survive loading because validate_loaded does not remove invalid project_links entries. If an ordinary media import reuses that key, the configured linked-project worker can accept the stale link and replace the new item's media with the rendered cache.
This does not affect linkedProject.import, which replaces an existing entry when it inserts the new link.
Optionally remove links whose keys do not identify media items during validate_loaded. That cleanup is not required to prevent ID reuse.

Keep automatic content hashing, but move it off the frequent scan and export caller.
poll recomputes the full project and dependency revision before checking the cache. export_media, export.quick, and export-queue processing call spawn_export, which performs synchronous preflight before starting the export job.
Do not cache revisions only by (size, mtime). That can miss saved edits with unchanged metadata. Schedule full content hashing on a worker at a lower automatic cadence, and let export preflight request and await a fresh worker result before starting the job. The automatic pass must remain enabled and must not depend on explicit Refresh.

Addressed the review in 43d6135, including the two findings outside the inline conversations:
Project::max_id now includes project_links keys, preventing a loaded orphaned link from reusing a newly imported item's ID. The dedicated orphan-key regression passes.
Fresh export revision hashing now runs on the guarded export worker before encoding or caption sidecar output. A regression verifies that the adapter is called off the command/UI thread and that failed preflight creates no output. Automatic full-content scans remain enabled on their existing background worker, now at a five-second cadence; there is no size/mtime-only shortcut.
The three inline conversations have fix-and-test replies and are resolved. All ten linked-project regressions, the ID regression, import-picker automation and the real EffectCraft saved-edit/timeline/export/bake integration pass. Formatting, strict workspace/all-target Clippy, layers, assets and all 49 wasm crate checks pass.
The full unfiltered workspace run still stops at the previously documented NVENC SDR metadata assertion tracked by #2386. Encoder code is unchanged. Updated GitHub CI is pending; I am not claiming full local CI is green. All integration content is synthetic.

Validate revision-keyed caches before reuse.
render_cached reuses any existing revision-keyed file without validating it. A truncated cache is then marked ready by poll, while export preflight rejects it. Later automatic scans reuse the same invalid file, so recovery requires manual Refresh.

Use a per-user directory for linked-render caches.
On native targets, crate::temp_dir() returns std::env::temp_dir() with no private-directory creation or ownership check. On Linux, this can be shared /tmp. Another local user can pre-create FilmCraftLinkedProjects-v1, and create_dir_all accepts it. That user can replace published files. path.is_file() accepts the replacement, and export validation only checks that open_file succeeds and that the file contains video metadata.
Use a platform user-cache directory and create it privately before the path.is_file() check. Do not use libc::geteuid in crates/engine: the crate has no libc dependency, and workspace rules forbid unsafe code there.

Check queued exports against their own project snapshots.
If a user queues sequence A and then selects sequence B, this notice checks B instead of the queued export. It can hide the renderer warning even though starting the queue fails preflight for A. Each queued item stores its own project and sequence, and the queue exports those values. Keep the active-sequence check for immediate export, but check ready queue items against their snapshots for the queue notice. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Saving an EffectCraft composition currently requires manually rendering and replacing a movie in FilmCraft. This PR adds a persistent saved-project reference: import an
.ecproj, choose a composition, and let a background worker refresh its full-quality transparent source after saved edits while retaining the existing timeline item's placement, trim and effects.Refs #388 and #1024. This is a reviewable prototype of the CLI-first approach, not a claim that the maintainers have approved the process-versus-library architecture. Coordination plan: #388 (comment)
