codecs, render, export: skip non-reference pictures no exported frame uses - #3049

A 30 fps export of 59.94 fps media uses every other source picture, but the GOP cache decoded every one: only playback's catch-up hint let it skip a sample, and that hint is a time threshold an export cannot give, since its frames are rendered in parallel batches and reach a cache out of order. The export now passes its output frame duration (RenderOptions::frame_step); the renderer turns it into a thread's frame grid (cancel::with_frame_grid) around the frame request of each clip that maps output frames to media time one to one (top level, 100 % speed, forward, no frame hold, no effect that reads other frames; nested and multicam clips get none). The MP4 source maps a sample to the first grid instant at or after it is presented (pts plus the edit list offset), rounded as a request is, and the cache leaves out a non-reference sample that instant does not decode. Non-reference pictures are used by no other picture, so the frames decoded are unchanged. A request for a sample the cache left out restarts the decoder at the sync sample instead of continuing (which would return the frame before it); one made with the grid also turns the grid off for that cache, so a wrong grid costs one restart, never a wrong frame. Other containers take no grid yet. 20 s of 1080p 59.94 fps H.264 (four non-reference B-frames per P-frame) in a 30 fps export, hardware decoding: samples decoded 1198 -> 721, decodeMs 2952 -> 1871, export 7.60 -> 6.96 s (means of 4 rounds); output byte-identical.

The change remains a bounded performance optimization, with no new privilege or access path established. Recovery safeguards limit its effects, although panic recovery and incomplete security coverage leave some uncertainty.

Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The demonstrated mutable-state scope is the decoder cache for a selected media source and the worker's thread-local request hint. Jobs sharing that source can affect its skip history and grid-disable state. The inspected evidence does not establish a tenant-wide or cross-service exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Media-controlled sample bytes and timestamps feed the existing decoder interface. The new omission path still requires the decoder to classify a sample as disposable, excludes the requested sample, and conservatively retains samples when grid prediction fails.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- inferred — The 256-entry omission-history cap is not the only restart safeguard: continuation also checks decoder position and the emitted-output watermark, and unsuccessful decoding invalidates continuation after flushing. These controls counter a blanket claim that history eviction causes unsafe continuation, but do not prove the one-restart guarantee for every over-cap mixed-grid sequence.
- observed — Decode-pool work runs under the panic-restoring media context. On the normal Rayon-worker waiting path, a decoder-thread panic is converted to a decode error, limiting the circumstances in which a panic can escape into the direct render hint scope.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Make direct frame-grid scopes restore their previous value during unwinding, following Context::run's guard-based pattern, so recovered source panics cannot leave request hints on reused workers.

Explanation
The title accurately identifies the main change: codec, render, and export updates that skip non-reference pictures not used by exported frames. It is specific enough for the changeset, although the wording is grammatically awkward.

with_frame_grid restores the previous hint with a drop guard, as with_background does, so a panic caught further up does not leave a grid on the worker thread for the requests it runs next (they would mispredict and cost a restart).

Thanks for this. We're holding it for a maintainer review: skipping non-reference pictures across codecs, render and export changes the decode path for every export, and we want to validate it against our conformance corpus first. Summary
A 30 fps export of 59.94 fps media uses every other source picture, but the GOP cache decoded every one of them (the "59.94 fps sources decoded for 30 fps output" left as a follow-up in #3046). A sample is decoded or skipped as the decoder reaches it, and only playback's catch-up hint (M4.8) let the cache skip one. That hint is a time threshold ("frames before this one are late"), which an export cannot give: its frames are rendered in parallel batches, so requests reach a cache out of order, and a sample below one request's threshold can be the next request's frame.
This PR lets an export say which instants it will ask for, and the cache leaves out the non-reference samples none of them is shown at. The output is byte-identical; no setting, as with the other bit-exact decode work (M4.8 catch-up, M4.9).
The change
RenderOptions::frame_step(set byexport::Pipelineto the output frame duration) becomes the thread's frame grid (filmcraft_media::cancel::with_frame_grid, carried bycancel::Contextlike the other hints) around the frame request of each clip that maps output frames to media time one to one: a clip of the rendered sequence at 100 % speed, forward, with no frame hold and no enabled effect that reads other frames (vfx::is_temporal). Clips inside nested and multicam sequences get no grid, on the CPU and the GPU plan paths.mp4::grid_instantgives, for a sample, the first grid instant at or after it is presented, rounded asvideo_atrounds a request. A sample is presented at its pts plus the edit list offset: x264 files with B-frames delay every picture by the reorder, so the raw pts would put the prediction off by that many samples (this is what the 59.94 fps test catches).VideoDecoder::is_disposable, as in M4.8: H.264nal_ref_idc0, HEVC sub-layer non-reference pictures of the top temporal layer) when that instant does not decode it. While the grid is on, which samples are left out does not depend on the order of the requests.State::skipped, capped at 256). A request that lands on one restarts at the sync sample and decodes it; continuing would hand back the frame before it. If that request was made with the grid, the grid was wrong (two clips of one item at different phases, a file the prediction gets wrong), so it turns the grid off for that cache: a wrong grid costs one restart per cache, never a wrong frame. A request without the grid (the Program monitor asking for a frame the export left out) restarts without turning it off. Before → after
