Closes #1377.
Replaces #1087 and #1470.

Adds Turkish as an interface language: Edit ▸ Language ▸ Türkçe, Settings ▸ General ▸ Interface Language, and System Language for tr / tr-TR locales.

  • crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tr.tsv: 3,590 entries (the Spanish catalog's sources plus the macOS Settings item), written clean-room using standard open NLE terminology. Sidecar tr.tsv.attribution and an ATTRIBUTION.md row.
  • Turkish diacritics (ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü, Ç, Ğ, İ, Ö, Ş, Ü) render with bundled interface fonts; verified via turkish_renders_with_bundled_fonts.
  • Turkish-aware casing: workspace names uppercase with Turkish dotted/dotless rules (i → İ, ı → I), and matches_query folds İ to i so search queries like inceleme match İnceleme.
  • Registered Language::Tr and command app.language.turkish in crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs and native macOS menus in apps/filmcraft/src/native_menu.rs.
  • Settings validation and persistence across restarts supported in crates/engine/src/settings.rs and verified in crates/engine/src/settings_tests.rs.
  • Tests: turkish_covers_the_menus_and_has_no_dead_entries, turkish_renders_with_bundled_fonts, workspace_name_uppercasing_is_turkish_aware, language_commands_switch_and_persist_without_a_document, system_language_follows_the_preferred_locales, and catalogs_are_well_formed.
  • Verification gates passed: cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets, cargo fmt --check, cargo test -p filmcraft-ui-egui --lib (198/198), cargo test -p filmcraft-engine --lib settings_tests (30/30).
  • Docs updated: docs/localization-parity.md, docs/gaps.md (G14), and crates/ui-egui/README.md.

Native-speaker review welcome.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added Turkish as an interface language in settings and language menus.
    • Turkish is selected automatically when the system language is Turkish.
    • Added Turkish translations for interface text and native menu labels.
    • Turkish language selections are saved and restored consistently.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved Turkish-specific capitalization and search matching across effects, presets, templates, and commands.
  • Documentation

    • Updated localization documentation and attribution details to include Turkish support.

Add crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tr.tsv, clean-room Turkish translations matching every entry in the Spanish catalog plus the native macOS Settings menu (3,590 entries).

Language::Tr ("Türkçe") is persisted as `tr` in `general.interfaceLanguage`; it appears in Edit > Language (and native macOS menu), Settings > General, and System Language picks it for `tr-*` locales.

Tests cover the core menus, reject dead entries, verify bundled font rendering for Turkish characters (Ç, Ğ, İ, Ö, Ş, Ü, ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü), switching/persistence across restarts, and locale matching. Attribution sidecar, ATTRIBUTION.md, ui-egui README, gaps.md, and localization-parity.md updated.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 5a53e

Decomposed Turkish text can lowercase incorrectly through the public API. This is a narrow issue that can be fixed before merging or accepted for follow-up.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 5a53e

The reviewed changes remain within interface-language selection and presentation. Search results retain their original action identifiers, and Turkish selection uses the existing preference validation and persistence paths. No material security risk was identified in these flows.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — In the inspected consumers, the effective change is bounded to local preference state, displayed text, and search-result visibility. Broader matching does not grant additional command authority or substitute another resource identifier.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The Turkish command follows the existing preference-validation path. Search text influences row inclusion, while subsequent preset and template operations use original identifiers rather than translated labels.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The preexisting preference path updates memory before attempting disk persistence. A failed save can therefore leave the selected language active in memory. Turkish uses this same behavior without changing its authority or failure-containment scope.

Explanation

Issue #1377 requires a complete Turkish catalog, language registration, locale detection, broad interface coverage, terminology, coverage and Unicode tests, clean-room localization, and a parity document update. The PR adds tr.tsv with 3,590 entries, registers Language::Tr and language commands, maps tr, tr-TR, and tr_TR.UTF-8, adds Turkish-aware casing and search tests, adds catalog and font validation, updates docs/localization-parity.md, and records clean-room attribution. The reviewed i18n/mod.rs confirms catalog loading, persistence code tr, and Turkish locale matching.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to Turkish localization. Turkish-aware casing and search support translated labels and user queries. Font support, settings persistence, native menus, attribution, tests, and documentation support language delivery and maintenance. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

  • The catalog is clean. I compared tr.tsv with es.tsv by script: the same 3,590 keys, no extras or duplicates, placeholders and trailing "…" preserved, valid UTF-8. Samples read as natural Turkish. The registration covers every place Language::It is used.
  • crates/ui-egui/src/header.rs:117: the workspace name is uppercased with to_uppercase(), which turns "i" into "I", not "İ". "Birleştirme" shows as "BIRLEŞTIRME" and "Grafikler" in "Altyazılar ve Grafikler" as "GRAFIKLER". Please use a Turkish-aware uppercase when the language is Turkish (map i to İ and ı to I first) and add a test.
  • crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs:222: matches_query lowercases "İnceleme" to "i" plus a combining dot, so a search for "inceleme" does not find it. Fold İ to i before comparing, with a test.
  • #1087 and #1470 also add tr.tsv and are open. Please say in the description that this replaces them, so a maintainer can close those.

Thanks for the review and the detailed feedback!

I have addressed all points in commit 81bca90:

Turkish-aware uppercase (header.rs:117): Added crate::i18n::to_uppercase which maps i → İ and ı → I before uppercasing when the active language is Turkish (e.g. "Birleştirme" → "BİRLEŞTİRME", "Altyazılar ve Grafikler" → "ALTYAZILAR VE GRAFİKLER"). Added unit tests in header.rs and i18n/mod.rs.
Dotted İ search folding (i18n/mod.rs:222): Updated matches_query to fold İ to i (and strip combining dots) before comparing, so searching for "inceleme" properly matches "İnceleme" / "Review". Added regression test assertions.
PR description: Updated the description to explicitly state Replaces #1087 and #1470. so maintainers can close those open PRs upon merge.
All verification gates and unit tests (cargo test -p filmcraft-ui-egui --lib, cargo fmt --check, cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets) pass cleanly.

Re-reviewed on 46b517d (81bca90 plus the I/ı follow-up). All three earlier asks are done.

  • Uppercase (crates/ui-egui/src/header.rs:117, i18n/mod.rs:198): Language::to_uppercase maps i→İ and ı→I before uppercasing when the language is Turkish, so "Birleştirme" becomes "BİRLEŞTİRME" and "Grafikler" becomes "GRAFİKLER". English stays as it was. When I turn the Turkish branch off, workspace_name_uppercasing_is_turkish_aware fails.
  • Search (i18n/mod.rs:249-268): fold_query folds İ and the combining dot, so "inceleme" finds "İnceleme". The new fold_turkish pass also lets lowercase "ışık" find labels that start with "Işık" (about 50 rows in tr.tsv), which 81bca90 alone still missed. When I put the old matches_query back, the Turkish test fails at mod.rs:1381.
  • Description: it now says it replaces #1087 and #1470.
  • The only other to_uppercase() calls in ui-egui uppercase the first letter of internal names, so they don't need this.

Local checks (merged with main, which was already up to date): cargo fmt --check and clippy --workspace --all-targets --release -D warnings pass, and so do cargo xtask wasm, layers and assets. All 198 filmcraft-ui-egui lib tests pass. I couldn't finish the full cargo test --workspace because my computer ran out of memory and disk. I didn't re-run filmcraft-engine's settings tests on this head, but this round doesn't touch that crate. Hosted CI hasn't run yet.

At 81dfe43, the Turkish fallback still misses this through the Effects search path: effects.rs passes q.to_lowercase() before matches_query, so IŞIK becomes işik, whereas Işık folds to ışık in the Turkish branch. The direct matcher regression bypasses this caller normalization. Please preserve the raw query for matches_query (or use Turkish-aware normalization before generic lowercasing) and add coverage through the Effects search caller. Source inspection only; I have not executed the test.

Good catch, thank you!

You're right: effects.rs was calling generic q.to_lowercase() before passing the query to matches_query, which converted I to i (dotted) and broke the Turkish fallback folding for dotless ı.

To address this:

  1. Preserved raw query in callers: Changed q.to_lowercase() to q.trim() across effects.rs (and other search callers like shortcuts_dialog.rs, graphics_templates.rs, and export_mode.rs) so matches_query receives the unmodified query and handles both standard and Turkish-aware folding without prior character corruption.
  2. Turkish-aware to_lowercase: Added Language::to_lowercase and pub fn to_lowercase to i18n::mod (symmetric with to_uppercase) using İ → i and I → ı rules.
  3. Effects caller coverage:
    • Added a unit test in panels/effects.rs exercising show(&mut app, ui, rect) with queries "IŞIK", "ışık", and "Işık", verifying that effects.item.light_leaks ("Light Leaks" → "Işık Sızıntıları") is resolved in the tree.
    • Added an end-to-end integration test in tests/panels_ui.rs verifying the same behavior through the UI Driver and ui.set { effectsSearch: ... }.

…casing

Preserve the raw query string instead of pre-lowercasing with q.to_lowercase() in the Effects panel, shortcuts dialog, graphics templates, and export preset manager searches. Pre-lowercasing converted dotless capital 'I' to dotted 'i' via generic Unicode casing, bypassing the Turkish search folding branch in matches_query.

Add Language::to_lowercase and to_lowercase to i18n::mod with Turkish-aware casing rules (İ -> i, I -> ı).

Add unit and integration tests covering the Effects search caller and Turkish casing variations (IŞIK, ışık, Işık).

Reviewed commit b1bc3deceaca88655526a1747eb449ba72290342.

Current-head recheck of the earlier Turkish search concern: the present diff keeps the Effects query raw/trimmed instead of applying generic lowercasing before locale-aware matching. It also adds effects_search_matches_turkish_casing for IŞIK/ışık/Işık through the actual Effects caller, and similarly updates the other search callers.

That addresses the specific caller-normalization issue that caused this candidate to be held in the RC audit. I am not requesting changes for that old finding. This is a scoped static recheck, not a full approval or a claim that I ran this head; retain the caller-level regression and verify it in exact-head hosted tests.
