A clean-room DV25 decoder is welcome, and the wiring is tidy (dv_factory only claims CodecConfig::Dv, and the dvc sample entry only maps to it). I'm asking for changes in two places before I can look at the decoder itself.
- Mixed change. The first commit,
apps/filmcraft/src/dev_icon.rs(the Linux dev desktopMimeType=line), has nothing to do with DV. The same fix is already open as #1958 ("dev desktop entry: the packaged MIME types too"), and #2122 carries a third copy. Please drop it from this PR and rely on #1958. - The oracle tests can skip silently, even in CI mode.
crates/dv/tests/oracle.rsrunsCommand::new("ffmpeg")itself andreturns with "SKIPPED" when it is missing.native_dv_mov_with_big_endian_pcm_and_random_seeking(crates/codecs/src/tests.rs) does the same through itsffmpeg(). The repo hasfilmcraft-testkit(require_ffmpeg!/ffmpeg_or_skip,crates/testkit/src/lib.rs:24), whereFILMCRAFT_REQUIRE_ORACLES=1turns a skip into a failure. Without it, a green run without ffmpeg proves nothing about the decoder. Please use it in the newdvoracle test (filmcraft-testkitis a dev-dependency in the other codec crates).
Questions on the decoder itself:
- The README says four abbreviated VLC words from Table 24 were expanded "validated against the external oracle". The oracle is FFmpeg's own DV encoder output. A code word its encoder never emits is not checked. Do you have any real camera footage (even a few frames you may share) that decodes to the same pixels as FFmpeg?
- Are the progressive and interlaced cases both covered with chroma at the right edge (the "clipped rightmost chroma blocks")? The test list shows six patterns, with a hand-built
geqone for chroma.
Size: 737 added lines plus a new crate. Please split the MIME line out, and I'll review the decoder and ask the pool to run it with ffmpeg 8.1 and FILMCRAFT_REQUIRE_ORACLES=1 once the tests use the testkit.

Native decoding expands the video files the application can process. Fixed frame limits, fresh per-frame buffers, and existing error handling constrain the added exposure. No concrete security defect was established, but malformed-input assurance remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- observed — Imported media bytes reach the new decoder through the existing media opener, MOV source, decoder factory, and GOP cache. The demonstrated exposure is the importing application’s media-processing path and downstream frame consumers, rather than a newly introduced service or authority boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Attacker-controlled sample bytes encounter exact frame-size, header, and video DIF identity checks. Output planes have fixed dimensions, segment decoding stages local block state before pixel writes, and frame-level errors discard the local frame before the adapter returns output.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The existing intra-frame cache path uses private decoder instances and synchronized publication of successful owned frames. Decode errors do not publish output, and plane recycling requires exclusive Arc ownership. Cancellation is cooperative: an in-flight decode may finish and cache a complete frame, but the inspected path does not publish partially constructed DV planes.

Thanks! Pushed. The PR is now two commits: the decoder (unchanged) and one test/docs follow-up.
Real footage. Attached: three frames stream-copied from my own NTSC DV25 camera MOV, with a README containing the commands to compare them. Across those frames, 90.75% of samples are identical to FFmpeg's and the rest are off by one (one sample by two). Across the whole 285-frame clip: max 2, MSE 0.088. The differences are symmetric (no bias), which fits fixed-point arithmetic in FFmpeg's weighting/IDCT against our floating-point evaluation of the spec. FFmpeg's own Right-edge chroma. You were right to ask: there was a gap, just a different one. The decoder only sees each block's DCT mode bit (8×8 or 2-4-8). FFmpeg's encoder never codes chroma with 2-4-8, and luma only with
A decoder with 2-4-8 broken passed before and fails now. The camera clip has 5,247 right-edge 2-4-8 chroma blocks, all within ±1. Also fixed: the MOV test now compares each seek against FFmpeg's frame and checks the PCM is exact. Its "frame 29" was one past the end of the 29-frame fixture. The follow-up only touches tests and docs: about 140 net lines. |

Block::decoderuns a linearpositionsearch over 64 entries for every decoded AC coefficient. One frame has 8,100 blocks with up to 63 coefficients each. The search can therefore cost millions of comparisons per frame on the playback path.ORDERis constant, so a[[u8; 64]; 2]table from scan index to raster index removes the search. The table also removes the"invalid DV scan"error path: thescan >= 64check on Line 133 already bounds the index.
Block::newalso stores one byte per bit (Vec<u8>built on Line 107) for each of the 8,100 blocks, andcontinue_fromextends these vectors again. If profiling of real clips shows decode time near the 33 ms frame budget, read the bits from a shared bit reader instead.♻️ Proposed change

Conceal damaged DV segments instead of failing the frame.
decode_frame propagates malformed VLC, coefficient-run, missing-EOB, and 0xF/0xF macroblock errors to its caller. DvDecoder::decode maps them to CodecError::Decode, so the affected sample produces no DecodedFrame; the normal GOP path propagates that error.
Recover at segment scope. Leave damaged macroblocks at the initial luma and chroma values, or copy co-located pixels. Continue with the next segment. Keep frame-level errors for invalid frame size, headers, and DIF IDs.

Implement a dependency-free decoder from SMPTE 314M-2005 and route MOV dvc samples through native video playback, preserving existing audio and seeking support. Add generated oracle and malformed-packet tests, a streaming decode example, and scope and architecture documentation. Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex
Review follow-up for the DV25 decoder tests: - Find ffmpeg and generate fixtures through filmcraft-testkit, so FILMCRAFT_REQUIRE_ORACLES=1 turns a missing ffmpeg into a failure instead of a silent skip. The DV oracle fixtures are named specs cached under target/fixtures/dv/ and registered with `cargo xtask fixtures dv`; the mutation checks are their own test. - FFmpeg's DV encoder only codes luma with the 2-4-8 DCT when asked for +ildct and never codes chroma with it, so the interlaced pattern had no 2-4-8 blocks at all. Encode it with +ildct, add two patterns whose chroma blocks are switched to 2-4-8 before both decoders read them, assert that this coverage is present, and check the clipped rightmost chroma columns separately from the whole picture. - Move the DV MOV test to tests/it/dv_oracle.rs: each seek (out of order, then sequential) is compared against ffmpeg's frame, the 4:1:1 chroma must be replicated into 4:2:2, and the PCM must be sample-exact. The fixture has 29 frames; the old test requested a 30th. - Docs: the DV README states how the expanded VLC words and the 2-4-8 cases are covered; docs/testing.md lists the DV oracle criterion and its fixtures; codec-parity.md and gaps.md get revision-history rows for the DV entries the decoder commit changed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Block::decode searched ORDER (SMPTE 314M figure 27) for the raster position of every AC coefficient. SCAN is its inverse, built at compile time from ORDER, so the lookup is one checked index. Output is bit-identical (the 285-frame camera clip and every oracle fixture); the camera clip decodes in 5.6 ms per frame instead of 6.2. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The DV25 decoder changes these docs; contributing.md asks for their "Last updated" lines and revision history to follow. Update the three headers, add the ROADMAP revision row, and date the codec-parity and gaps rows 2026-10-27, when the change was rebased onto main, so they are the newest entries. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Damaged coded data (a macroblock with STA 0xF, an invalid VLC, an overlong coefficient run or a missing end of block) now conceals only its video segment, which keeps black luma and neutral chroma, and the rest of the frame decodes. The five macroblocks of a segment share its overflow bits, so the segment is the smallest unit that can be dropped safely. A wrong frame size, header or DIF ID is still a frame error. Frame::concealed counts the concealed segments. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Compare
The test compared only luma. It now also checks that the concealed segments' Cb and Cr samples are neutral (128) and every other chroma sample matches the clean decode, as docs/testing.md describes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The concealment test covered a damaged macroblock and an overlong run. It now also covers a segment with no end of block, and checks that each damaged segment is rejected for its own reason before it is concealed. An invalid VLC cannot occur: with its escapes the table covers every bit pattern (now a test), so the README no longer lists it, and corrupt AC bits surface as an overlong run or a missing end of block. On every oracle fixture, 96 bit flips in video DIF payloads must each decode to a frame with at most one concealed segment, and some flips must actually be concealed. Rebased onto current
The CI workflows here are waiting for maintainer approval (fork PR). Meanwhile, the same |
NTSC DV camera MOV files currently import without a usable native video decoder. This adds a dependency-free, pure-Rust decoder so FilmCraft can play and seek the original files directly, alongside its existing PCM audio support.
The new
filmcraft-dvL0 crate implements 525/60 DV25/DVCPRO25 4:1:1 decoding from SMPTE 314M-2005 (stabilized 2013): DIF indexing, three-pass AC bit allocation, VLC/escape decoding, inverse quantization, 8×8 and 2-4-8 IDCT, and macroblock unshuffling.craft-media's MOV demuxer reports thedvcsample entry as an unrecognized video entry (CodecConfig::Unknownwith that fourcc), anddv_factoryclaims exactly that entry and nothing else; nocraft-libschange is needed. Native 4:1:1 chroma is replicated into the compositor's existing 4:2:2 representation. No runtime FFmpeg dependency or media conversion is introduced.MOV integration currently covers the
dvcsample entry and 720×480 NTSC DV25. PAL DV, DV50/DVCPRO50, DVCPRO HD, raw DV audio demultiplexing, AVI DV and DV encoding remain unsupported. The crate README records the specification edition and the interpretation of four abbreviated printed VLC words.Tests generate fixtures locally through
filmcraft-testkit(FILMCRAFT_REQUIRE_ORACLES=1makes a missing ffmpeg a failure); no private media or binary fixtures are included:target/fixtures/dv/(cargo xtask fixtures dv). They cover the 8×8 and 2-4-8 DCT: the interlaced pattern is encoded with+ildct, and two patterns have every chroma block switched to 2-4-8, since FFmpeg's encoder never codes chroma that way.Real camera footage (not committed): a 285-frame NTSC DV25 QuickTime clip decodes within maximum sample error 2 / mean squared error 0.088 of FFmpeg, including 5,247 2-4-8 chroma blocks at the right edge, and all four expanded VLC words occur in it.
