test/e2e: re-add mixed cluster E2E test suite - #3670
This review ran on the open-source allowance, not this organization's plan, because the pull request author doesn't have an assigned seat. Waiting won't change this — ask an organization admin to assign them a seat, or add seats in Billing if every seat is already assigned, then retry.

Walkthrough
The changes add label-key constants and a serial Ginkgo suite for mixed-cluster Kata configurations. The suite checks node labels, RuntimeClass selectors, and pod placement. It also checks that disabling and re-enabling mixed-cluster mode removes and restores bare-metal node labels and the kata RuntimeClass selector. Tests skip when mixed-cluster mode, required hardware, or optional RuntimeClasses are unavailable.
No new merge-blocking issue is established by this review. Evaluate the previously published test findings separately before relying on the E2E suite.

Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files.
Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
All 11 added Ginkgo test titles and the suite title use fixed string literals. The diff contains no interpolation, timestamps, generated identifiers, node names, namespace names, IP addresses, or legacy metadata tokens. The MC01–MC11 prefixes are static suite identifiers, not dynamic values.
Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
The added suite follows the repository patterns. NewOC provides per-test namespace setup and cleanup. Pod tests register deleteKataResource, whose deletion wait is bounded. Pod creation uses the helper's 10-minute readiness timeout. Toggle waits use bounded three-minute polls. Assertions include diagnostic messages, and the tests use BeforeEach, DeferCleanup, NewOC, and existing helpers consistently. The new It blocks do not use ote.Informing(); this remains an optional recommendation under the check, not a failure.
Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility
Explanation
The added Mixed Cluster suite does not introduce an unguarded SNO-incompatible assumption. Tests MC02, MC04, and MC08–MC10 call hasMixedHardware() and skip unless both bare-metal and virtual nodes exist. The operator defines these as mutually exclusive node classes, so a single-node cluster cannot satisfy that gate. MC01, MC03, MC05–MC07, and MC11 inspect labels or RuntimeClass configuration and do not require multiple nodes, node-to-node communication, failover, or cross-node scheduling.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
The PR changes only test/e2e/kata_helpers.go and test/e2e/kata_test.go. They add labels and E2E checks that query or patch existing Kata resources and create test pods. They do not add or modify deployment manifests, operator code, controllers, replicas, affinity, topology spread constraints, PDBs, or control-plane/worker scheduling selectors.
Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract
Explanation
The pull request adds no process-level stdout writes. The new top-level Describe registration only creates suite state and hooks. Its BeforeEach and It bodies use Logf, which writes to ginkgo.GinkgoWriter. NewOC captures command stdout in buffers, and Execute also writes to GinkgoWriter. No fmt.Print*, log.Print*, klog, os.Stdout, or suite-setup output was added.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
The pull request adds node-label constants and Kubernetes E2E checks only. The changed lines introduce no MD5, SHA1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, ECB, cryptographic API, custom crypto, or secret/token comparisons.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only test/e2e/kata_helpers.go and test/e2e/kata_test.go. The added code contains no privileged: true, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, allowPrivilegeEscalation: true, or root security settings. The pod tests call existing helpers and do not add a manifest or security context.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
The added suite logs raw Kubernetes node names. Logf("BM nodes: %v", bmNodes) and Logf("Nested-virt nodes: %v", nestedNodes) write node metadata names to GinkgoWriter (test/e2e/kata_test.go:1001,1027). Assertion messages also interpolate nodeName at lines 1166, 1192, 1220, and 1222. These values can be internal hostnames. The new suite also includes dynamic oc errors in skip/assertion output.
Resolution
Log only node counts or fixed messages. Remove nodeName interpolation from assertion and error messages. Redact or otherwise sanitize dynamic oc errors and API output before writing them to Ginkgo output.
Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility
Explanation
The new [sig-kata] Mixed Cluster suite is not protected from MicroShift. All MC01–MC11 tests are under test/e2e/kata_test.go:936-1292, without a [Skipped:MicroShift], [apigroup:...], or exutil.IsMicroShiftCluster() guard. Its BeforeEach runs oc get kataconfig at lines 949–953, and MC11 patches the same resource at lines 1242–1281. The repository defines this resource in the unavailable kataconfiguration.openshift.io/v1 API group (api/v1/groupversion_info.go:19,29; config/crd/bases/kataconfiguration.openshift.io_kataconfigs.yaml:9-12). The mixed bare-metal and virtual-node assumptions also do not apply to MicroShift.
Resolution
MicroShift compatibility notice: This test uses APIs and features that are not available on MicroShift. If presubmit CI does not already include MicroShift jobs, verify it with /payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-microshift-release-4.22-periodics-e2e-aws-ovn-ocp-conformance-serial. Because this suite uses kataconfiguration.openshift.io and mixed hardware, add [apigroup:kataconfiguration.openshift.io] to the Describe name or add [Skipped:MicroShift]. Alternatively, call exutil.IsMicroShiftCluster() and g.Skip() before the KataConfig and mixed-hardware operations.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
The new serial Mixed Cluster suite sets workloadImage to quay.io/openshift/origin-hello-openshift in test/e2e/kata_test.go:945. MC08 and MC09 pass this image through NewPodDescription and createKataPodFromDescription; the pod template uses it as the container image, so disconnected CI may pull from a public registry. No new IPv4-only assumption was found. The tests have no [Skipped:Disconnected] marker.
Resolution
Use a cluster-internal image stream or mirrored image for MC08 and MC09. If public-registry access is required, add [Skipped:Disconnected] to the applicable test names and document the limitation. Run /payload-job periodic-ci-openshift-release-master-nightly-4.22-e2e-metal-ipi-serial-ovn-ipv6.

RuntimeClass nodeSelector to poll until the selector reflects the expected
state, using a bounded timeout like the existing label polls; retain the
respective absence and presence checks for kataCapableLabelKey.
- Around line 1249-1252: In the bare-metal node label-removal polling checks,
handle the error returned by `Output()` instead of discarding it. When listing
nodes fails, keep polling rather than treating empty output as successful label
removal; apply the same behavior to the repeated check.
- Around line 1062-1072: Update the MC04 and MC09 test cases to check whether
the kata-remote RuntimeClass exists after the mixed-hardware check and skip when
it is absent. Reuse the RuntimeClass existence-check pattern from MC05, MC06, or
MC07, placing the check before MC04 retrieves the RuntimeClass and before MC09
creates the pod.
- Line 998: Update the MC01 and MC11 hardware-dependent checks so they skip when
the cluster has no bare-metal nodes, rather than failing an assertion. In MC11,
perform the availability check before patching KataConfig; keep these checks
within the existing tier gates.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Microshift Test Compatibility:
**MicroShift compatibility notice:** This test uses APIs or features that are
not available on MicroShift. If this repository's presubmit CI does not already
include MicroShift jobs, verify the test with `/payload-job
periodic-ci-openshift-microshift-release-4.22-periodics-e2e-aws-ovn-ocp-conformance-serial`.
Because the suite is intentionally specific to the KataConfig API and mixed
hardware, add `[apigroup:kataconfiguration.openshift.io]` to its `Describe`
name, or add `[Skipped:MicroShift]`; alternatively add an
`exutil.IsMicroShiftCluster()` check that calls `g.Skip()` before the KataConfig
and mixed-hardware operations.
- Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility:
Use a cluster-internal image stream or mirrored image for the Mixed Cluster pod
tests. If public-registry access is required, add `[Skipped:Disconnected]` to
the applicable test names and document the limitation. Run the required serial
IPv6 CI job.
- No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs:
Do not log raw node lists or node names. Log only counts or fixed messages, or
use a documented redaction/hash. Remove nodeName interpolation from assertion
and error messages, and sanitize any dynamic `oc` error or API output before
sending it to Ginkgo output.

Re-adds the mixed cluster E2E tests reverted in 55774ec with the
following fixes:
- Replace compat_otp.NewCLI/GetPodNodeName with NewOC/GetPodNodeName
from the current e2e framework (oc_client.go, oc_helpers.go)
- Fix jsonpath label lookups to use escaped dots for dotted label keys
- Split test gating into two tiers: Tier 1 (feature flag) runs on any
cluster with enableMixedCluster=true, Tier 2 (mixed hardware) requires
both BM and VM nodes
- Add defer to restore enableMixedCluster after toggle-off test
- Handle oc errors in cluster type detection instead of discarding them
