Summary

Legacy-encoded Shapefile attributes and field names can be garbled or dropped on import because the readers ignore .cpg files and the streamed reader assumes UTF-8.

Use the .cpg encoding first, then the DBF language-driver marker, with the existing UTF-8 fallback when metadata is absent. Share the selection across loose files, ZIP imports and streamed reads, including complete chunk reads. This covers Windows code pages, DOS CP437/CP850, ISO-8859 labels and common East Asian encodings; unusable metadata or unreadable sidecars produce an import notice and fall back without blocking import. Loose-file lookup accepts every .cpg extension case. Esri's 0x57 marker is read as Windows-1252.

Enable dbase's pure-Rust legacy decoder for DOS pages and use encoding_rs for its supported pages, preserving lossy UTF-8 handling and rejecting unknown labels explicitly. Update the user guide and shipped dependency notices.

Testing

  • cargo test -p rustgis-data --test shapefile_encoding: 13 regression tests, including unreadable sidecar fallback, every .cpg extension case, literal CP437/CP850 bytes, .cpg precedence, DBF markers, field names, streaming chunks, malformed metadata and UTF-8 compatibility.
  • cargo xtask ci: passed.
  • pre-commit run --all-files.
  • cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web.
  • cargo deny check licenses and cargo xtask notices.

The full local gate uses private temporary-directory permissions, serial GPU tests and the existing network-isolation runner for the relay smoke test, as required on this host. No additional tests are excluded. The existing GPU camera test failed once, then passed unchanged in isolation, with its full test suite and in the one full-gate retry.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Shapefile text now uses encoding information from .cpg files when available, with DBF code-page metadata as a fallback. This applies to loose and zipped files and improves decoding of field names and text values across a wider range of encodings.
    • When encoding metadata is missing or unsupported, text falls back to UTF-8; undecodable characters appear as replacement characters. Notices report issues with encoding metadata.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the data formats guide with Shapefile encoding behavior and supported encoding sources.

📝 Walkthrough

Shapefile DBF decoding now selects an encoding from an optional .cpg file or the DBF language-driver identifier. The selected decoder applies to field names and attribute text in loose-file, ZIP, and streamed reads. Encoding notes, tests, and user-guide documentation describe supported encodings and fallback behavior.

read_cpg(path)? makes an unreadable .cpg (permissions, a directory named x.cpg, a transient I/O error) fail the whole Shapefile import, even though the sidecar is optional and the rest of this PR falls back with a notice. The same applies in ShpSource::open_path. Consider treating a non-NotFound error as "no cpg" plus a message, e.g. crate::dbf::read_cpg(path).ok().flatten(). Confidence: medium-low, since it is a robustness choice and it fits the "hostile input" rule in AGENTS.md.

Fixed in 155dc8e. Both native readers now report a .cpg open/read failure as an import notice and fall back to the DBF code page or UTF-8. A generated directory-sidecar regression covers both fallback choices, sampled reads and complete chunks. All 13 encoding regressions, cargo xtask ci, pre-commit and the wasm build passed.

Code review

The PR adds .cpg and DBF language-driver (LDID) encoding support for Shapefiles. It covers whole-file reads, zipped reads and the streamed ShpSource. I read the diff only and did not build or run the tests. The design is sound, and the new test file covers all three readers.

Bugs

  • None found.

Security

  • None found. The .cpg read is capped at 1 KB, and from_utf8 plus the label lookups fall back safely on junk input.

Performance

  • ShpSource::value now calls encoding.decode for every text cell, where it used to take a from_utf8 fast path. The extra cost is small and the decoder is built once per read call, but it is worth a quick benchmark on a large .dbf if one is at hand. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • read_cpg(path)? makes an unreadable .cpg fatal for the whole import, although the sidecar is optional. This affects io.rs and ShpSource::open_path. I left an inline comment; the fix is to fall back with a notice. Confidence: medium-low.
  • from_mark and from_number repeat the same code-page mapping. They could share one table so the two paths can't drift apart. Nit.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, panic or indexing issues in non-test code. Test code uses unwrap() and indexing, which is allowed.
  • The new dependencies (encoding_rs, yore) are reflected in both THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt files. I could not confirm that deny.toml allows the licences or that wasm builds; CI should show both.
  • The new user-visible strings are notes in the data layer, which is not translated per the rules. The docs were updated.

Code review

I read the diff and its surrounding code but did not build or run the tests. I found no blocking problems. The change adds .cpg and .dbf language-driver decoding for Shapefile text in the whole-file, zip and streamed (ShpSource) readers. It is well structured, the hostile-input handling is sound, and the tests are thorough.

Bugs

  • No definite bugs found.
  • Low confidence (about 25%): DbfEncoding::Standard(UTF_8), chosen by a .cpg of UTF-8 or 65001, goes through dbase's EncodingRs decoder. That decoder may strip a leading U+FEFF from a field. The Utf8 fallback (no metadata) deliberately keeps a leading U+FEFF as data, as the last test notes. The two paths could differ for the same bytes. This is an edge case, and no test pins the behaviour for an explicit UTF-8 .cpg.
  • Low confidence (about 20%): from_name strips a CP, IBM, OEM, WINDOWS or ANSI prefix and then parses a u16. Any other numeric .cpg content, such as "1252 " with trailing text, falls through to from_label. That usually returns None and produces the "unsupported .cpg" note, which is acceptable.

Security

  • No issues. The .cpg read is bounded (take(MAX_CPG_BYTES + 1)), non-UTF-8 content is handled, and no unwrap or indexing is used in non-test code. A directory at the sidecar path is handled as an I/O error that falls back with a note.

Performance

  • Low confidence (about 30%): in crates/data/src/source/shp.rs, value() used to take a zero-copy from_utf8 fast path for text cells. It now runs the dynamic encoding.decode on every text cell and allocates. For large in-place layers (more than 100,000 features) this is an extra cost per cell on the render and query hot path. A fast path would avoid it: when the encoding is UTF-8 or ASCII-only, use from_utf8 directly.
  • Nit: try_read_cpg tries up to 8 File::open calls on every open when no .cpg exists. That is negligible, but a single read_dir of the parent would avoid it.

Quality

  • DbfEncoding::decoder() builds a fresh decoder on every read and visit_chunks call. That is fine and the comment explains why. Still, Oem(mark) falls back silently to UnicodeLossy if to_encoding() returns None, which looks unreachable for the five supported marks. A short comment saying so would help.
  • The numeric .cpg table in from_number duplicates the mapping in from_mark. They could share one table.

AGENTS.md

  • Adherence is good. There is no unwrap, expect, panic or unsafe in non-test code. Hostile .cpg content is bounded and tested. The change builds for wasm, because it adds no std::fs use outside the read_path and ShpSource paths. THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.txt is updated for yore. The tl! translation rule isn't relevant because no UI strings were added.
  • Needs checking (low confidence): yore and encoding_rs are new dependencies, so cargo deny check licenses must pass. yore is MIT, which deny.toml should already allow.
