feat(ui): the status bar keeps the last pointer position off the map - #1609
Closes#1573. The status bar's coordinate readout used to switch to — as soon as the pointer left the map, so you couldn't move onto the status bar and click the readout to another format while still seeing the position.
MapView keeps the last finite position seen over the map (kept_lonlat), together with the map's instance_id() and the session's opened it belongs to. The live pointer_lonlat is unchanged, so tools, the context menu and the other readers of it still use only the live position.
The status bar reads MapView::kept_pointer_lonlat(map instance, opened). It returns the kept position only while the active map and the project are the same ones, and drops it otherwise. So switching to another map tab, or opening another project by any path (the app, an agent or a script, which all bump Session::opened), puts the readout back to — with no extra hook.
The readout shows — until the pointer has been over the map. Clicking it cycles the formats (decimal, DMS, UTM, MGRS) on the retained position.
A retained position is drawn in text_disabled, dimmer than the live one (text_dim, unchanged), so you can tell it is no longer following the pointer.
No time, threads or Instant, so nothing differs in the web build. No new user-facing strings.
docs/user-guide/maps.md (Coordinate readouts) describes the retained position and when the readout shows —.
UI evidence
The sample World Atlas project at 1600×800, scale 1.5, rendered with the ui_shot example (pointer steps move the mouse). The readout is in the status bar, left of the coordinate system name.
Before the pointer has been over the map, the readout is —:
The pointer over the map (live):
The pointer moved onto the status bar. The same position is kept, dimmed:
Still off the map, after switching the format (here with ui.coordinateFormat, which is what a click on the readout runs), the kept position in DMS:
Testing
New tests in crates/ui-egui/tests/coordinate_readout.rs (kittest, RustGisApp::with_sample()):
the_position_stays_when_the_pointer_leaves_the_map_and_a_click_switches_format: the position is kept with the pointer on the status bar and after PointerGone. A real click on the readout switches to DMS with the same position, and the pointer back over the map follows it again.
the_position_is_dropped_on_another_map_or_project: map.new, going back to the first map, and project.new all return the readout to —.
cargo test -p rustgis-ui-egui -- --skip record_tests passes. Two record_tests (saved-login downloads) hang on this machine without network or keychain access; they don't touch the status bar.
cargo clippy -p rustgis-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --all --check are clean.
The wasm build wasn't checked locally: zstd-sys's build script needs a clang this machine lacks. The change uses only std and egui types.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The status bar now keeps showing the last map coordinates after the pointer leaves the map, with the readout dimmed to indicate the position is no longer live.
The readout shows a dash before the pointer has been over the map and resets when switching maps or opening a different project.
Documentation
Updated the maps guide to explain the coordinate readout’s retained-position behavior.
The coordinate readout keeps the last position over the map, dimmed, once the pointer leaves it,
so it can be read and clicked to another format on the status bar. It reads a dash until the
pointer has been over the map, and again on another map or project (Closesopengeos#1573).
The map view now retains the last finite pointer coordinate for its map and project context. The status bar displays the retained coordinate after the pointer leaves the map and dims it until the pointer returns.

Summary
Retain coordinates by map context crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs
MapView stores finite pointer coordinates with the active map-instance and project IDs. It returns a coordinate only when both IDs match.
Display and validate retained coordinates crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/coordinate_readout.rs, docs/user-guide/maps.md
The status bar displays matching retained coordinates and dims them when the pointer is not over the map. Tests cover empty, retained, and cleared states. The guide describes the readout behavior.

Explanation
The description follows the template. The Summary section explains the change and its reason, and it links issue #1573. The Testing section lists new kittest cases and the commands run. The UI evidence section has before and after screenshots, which the template requires for visible UI changes. The Related issue section links #1573 in the Summary, but the section itself is still the template placeholder. The description does not repeat the issue link in that section.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #1573 is open and active, so its coding requirements apply. The requirements are: (a) keep the last hovered map position when the pointer leaves the map, including over the status bar; (b) show — until a valid position is captured; (c) let a click on the readout cycle decimal, DMS, UTM and MGRS while showing the retained position; (d) clear the retained position on a different map context; (e) behave the same on desktop and web.
Evidence at head:
(a) crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rsinteract stores each finite pointer_lonlat in kept_lonlat with the map instance_id() and session.opened. pointer_lonlat itself is set to None when the pointer leaves, but kept_lonlat is not cleared. The status bar reads the kept value through kept_pointer_lonlat.
(b) kept_lonlat starts as None, and format.readout(None, earth) yields the dash.
(c) crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs passes the retained value to the existing Label with Sense::click(). The click handling is unchanged. The test the_position_stays_when_the_pointer_leaves_the_map_and_a_click_switches_format checks the DMS switch with the same position.
(d) kept_pointer_lonlat drops the value when the map instance or opened differs. The tests the_position_is_dropped_on_another_map_or_project check map.new and project.new.
(e) The change uses only std and egui types, with no time, thread or platform code.
Non-coding items (manual validation, clang/wasm build check) are disregarded. Residual uncertainty: the drop on a map switch runs when the status bar calls kept_pointer_lonlat. The change does not add a separate clear hook, so the clear depends on the status bar drawing each frame. I did not verify this in the status bar layout code. The tests exercise the drawn status bar. The map-switch test uses map.activate(...).ok(), which ignores errors, so the return-to-first-map step is weaker than its comment states. The issue does not require tests, so this does not change the verdict.

Explanation
The whole-PR diff (merge base d866893 to head 6fe05b2) touches four areas, and each connects to #1573:
crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs: adds the kept_lonlat field, sets it in interact for finite positions, and adds kept_pointer_lonlat. This implements the retained position. The live pointer_lonlat logic is unchanged.
crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs: passes the retained value to the status bar readout and chooses text_disabled for a retained value and text_dim for a live one. This implements the readout requirement and the dimmed display described in the PR.
crates/ui-egui/tests/coordinate_readout.rs: adds tests for the dash, retention, format switch, and map or project clearing. These support the linked requirements.
docs/user-guide/maps.md: documents the retained position and the dash conditions. This supports the feature.
No change is unrelated to #1573. No public API beyond the new pub fn kept_pointer_lonlat is altered. The PR does not change tools, the context menu or other readers of pointer_lonlat, as the PR states.

A rabbit spots a point on the map, Then hops away and keeps its tap. The numbers stay, now softly dim, Until the pointer visits again. Map and project keep them in line, Then formats cycle, neat and fine.

Bug (test): this check can never fail, so it doesn't test "back on the first map".
The sample's first map is named "World" (crates/engine/src/sample.rs:72), not "World Atlas", which is the project name. So map.activate errors, and .ok() swallows the error. The active map stays "Second Map", and the — assertion on the next line passes trivially.

Robustness (low confidence, about 30%): the stale slot is only cleared lazily, and only when kept_pointer_lonlat runs. That call sits in chrome::status_bar, which is skipped in backstage (lib.rs ~5245). If the map changes while backstage is open, with no opened bump and no hover, then after returning the readout may show the old position on the original map. That contradicts the "switching maps puts the readout back to —" claim in the PR body and maps.md.
I did not verify that a map switch can happen while backstage is open. A cheap guard is to call kept_pointer_lonlat once per frame, before the backstage branch in lib.rs, so the slot is cleared regardless of which view is drawn. Alternatively, drop the stale entry in the map-switch path directly.
I checked the diff against the repository's AGENTS.md, the referenced APIs, and the sample project. There were no prior review threads, so nothing was skipped as already raised.
Bugs
crates/ui-egui/tests/coordinate_readout.rs:201 (high confidence): the "back on the first map" step calls map.activate with "World Atlas" and ignores the error with .ok(). The sample's first map is named "World" (sample.rs:72), so the activation fails silently and the following — check passes without testing anything. Inline suggestion posted.
Security
None found. The change adds no input handling, parsing or I/O.
Performance
None found. The per-frame work is a copy of a small tuple.
Quality
crates/ui-egui/src/mapview.rs:446 (low confidence, about 30%): the slot is cleared lazily, and only when kept_pointer_lonlat runs in the status bar. That call is skipped in backstage, so a map change made while backstage is open could bring the old position back. I did not verify that such a switch is reachable. Inline comment posted with a fix suggestion.
Nit: kept_pointer_lonlat takes &mut self and clears state, which a getter-style name hides. The (Coord, u64, u64) tuple would read better as a named struct. Optional, for the release quality pass.
AGENTS.md
Compliant. No unwrap, expect or unsafe in non-test code. No new user-facing strings. The docs are updated. The PR body includes before and after screenshots. The new code uses only std and egui types, so it should not affect the wasm build, though I have not run that build.
I confirmed these APIs and types by reading the source: Session::opened and instance_id() are u64, Coord::is_finite exists, text_disabled exists in the theme, and instance_id comes from a process-wide counter, so the (map, opened) key cannot collide. I did not run the tests.
Already raised earlier: none (no prior threads).
