Main CI is red on Linux and Windows: a_mars_projection_in_a_geotiff_is_said_or_refused and planetographic_systems_without_east_axes_are_refused in crates/data/tests/planetary_crs.rs fail.

Cause

#1478 (planetary refusals, with these tests) and #1463 (new projections) merged close together, each green on its own:

Fix

Tests only, no library change: the expected metres come from rustgis_geom::EquidistantCylindrical on the Mars (2015) and WGS 84 ellipsoids, and the unread transformation is 26. Shapefiles on spherical systems keep r·φ.

Evidence

cargo test -p rustgis-data --test planetary_crs: 17 passed (2 failed on main before). clippy and pre-commit pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Updated planetary projection checks to use ellipsoidal coordinates for accepted east-axis cases, while retaining spherical coordinates for the planetocentric case.
    • Updated the Earth west-axis projection check to use WGS 84 ellipsoidal coordinates.
    • Revised the unread GeoTIFF transformation check to verify transformation 26 and its reported error number.

… ellipsoid

#1463 computes equidistant cylindrical systems on their ellipsoid (EPSG
method 1028) and reads CT_Robinson (23) from GeoTIFF keys. The
planetary tests from #1478, merged before it, built the native
coordinates of planetographic and WGS 84 eqc systems as r*phi on a
sphere and used 23 as a transformation RustGIS doesn't read, so main
failed both tests.

The expected metres now come from rustgis_geom::EquidistantCylindrical
on the Mars (2015) and WGS 84 ellipsoids, and the unread transformation
is 26, the New Zealand Map Grid the comment already named.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The planetary CRS tests now calculate Mars and Earth projected coordinates using ellipsoidal equidistant cylindrical projections. The unread-GeoTIFF-transformation test now checks transformation 26 instead of 23.

Changes: Planetary CRS tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ellipsoidal projection expectations
crates/data/tests/planetary_crs.rs
The Mars east-axis and Earth west-axis tests use ellipsoidal equidistant cylindrical coordinates. The Mars planetocentric-code case retains spherical coordinates.
Unread GeoTIFF transformation expectation
crates/data/tests/planetary_crs.rs
The unread-transformation test expects transformation 26 and updates the expected error text.

Possibly related issues

  • opengeos/RustGIS issue 1448 — The test updates cover planetary CRS behavior discussed in the issue, but do not implement its staged plan.
  • opengeos/RustGIS issue 1586 — The projection fixture update relates to the ellipsoidal-versus-spherical behavior question, which remains unresolved.

Possibly related PRs

  • opengeos/RustGIS#1588 — Updates the same tests and expectations as a parallel fix for the same CI failures.
  • opengeos/RustGIS#1478 — Adds the planetary CRS test file updated here.
  • opengeos/RustGIS#1463 — Establishes the ellipsoidal Equidistant Cylindrical behavior and GeoTIFF transformation handling reflected in these test expectations.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the planetary CRS tests now expect equidistant cylindrical coordinates computed on the ellipsoid, which matches the raw summary and objectives. The 'test(data)' prefix and the CI-fix note are accurate, and the title is a single sentence, though it is long at 95 characters.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the required template sections in substance. It has a Summary (cause, fix, and evidence for the failing tests), a Testing section (cargo test for planetary_crs, 17 passed, clippy and pre-commit pass), and a related issue reference to #1478 and #1463. The UI evidence section is missing its 'No visible UI change.' line, but the change is test-only and the description implies no UI impact. The related issue section is left as the template placeholder, so the linked PRs are cited only in prose. Adding the 'No visible UI change.' line and a formal related-issue reference would complete the template.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Code review

Bugs: None found. The test-only change is consistent with the library:

  • EquidistantCylindrical::new(a, es, …) takes eccentricity squared, and f * (2.0 - f) equals 1 − (b/a)², which is how crates/data/src/raster/crs.rs:497 computes it for the reader.
  • The Mars 2015 and WGS 84 flattenings in the test match the ones in the test's own WKT fixtures.
  • Coord is the same type on both sides (rustgis_data re-exports rustgis_geom::Coord).
  • GeoTIFF CT 26 has no read arm in crates/data/src/raster/geotiff.rs, so it falls through to the "isn't supported" error that the test matches on.

Security: None. The change touches only test code.

Performance: None.

Quality:

  • The comment at crates/data/tests/planetary_crs.rs:759 still says the unread transformation is 23. The code is now 26, and 23 is CT_Robinson, which the reader does read. The PR body also says the comment already names 26, but it names 23. Posted inline at line 763, since line 759 is outside the diff. Confidence: high.
  • The expected values come from rustgis_geom::EquidistantCylindrical::forward, the same code the reader uses. A symmetric error in that function would pass this test. crates/geom/src/eqc.rs:181 checks it against an EPSG Guidance Note 7-2 example, which mitigates this, so I'm not raising it as a blocker. Confidence: low.
  • Nits, left for the release quality pass: 169.894447223612 is written without underscores here but with them at planetary_crs.rs:637, and the constant is retyped instead of reused from MARS_OGRAPHIC_ESRI.

AGENTS.md: No violations. The PR changes only a test file, with no unwrap added to non-test code and no new dependencies.

Not verified: I had no shell, so I did not run cargo test, cargo fmt or clippy. The PR body's claim of 17 passing tests is unchecked.

Prior reviews: There were no existing threads, so no concerns were skipped.

Main also failed these two tests on macOS (run 42443783322), so this is labelled ci:full. The question of computing equidistant cylindrical on the ellipsoid while PROJ/GDAL compute it on a sphere is filed as #1586.

Code review

Bugs: None found. I checked the fixture math against the library and the reader:

  • EquidistantCylindrical::new(a, es, …) takes eccentricity squared, and f * (2.0 - f) is e² for both fixtures. Mars uses 1/169.894447223612 (matching MARS_WEST and MARS_OGRAPHIC_ESRI), and WGS 84 uses 1/298.257223563 (matching the Earth .prj).
  • The reader resolves those ellipsoids through crates/data/src/raster/crs.rs, so the expected values match what it reads.
  • GeoTIFF key 23 is the Some(23) Robinson arm, and nothing else in crates/data/src/raster/ handles 26. So the new "unread transformation 26" refusal path is real, and the comment at line 759 now matches the value.
  • Confidence: high (about 90%), from reading. I did not compile or run the tests.

Security: None. The change is test-only.

Performance: None.

Quality (nit, low impact): 1.0 / 169.894447223612 is now repeated inline in the test at crates/data/tests/planetary_crs.rs:145, and the Mars flattening is also written out in the MARS_WEST and MARS_OGRAPHIC_ESRI constants. A single const MARS_FLATTENING would keep them in step. I'm leaving this for the release quality pass rather than posting it inline.

AGENTS.md: Compliant. The changed code is in an integration-test file behind cfg(not(wasm32)), and the existing unwrap() use there is pre-existing test style. No dependency changes, no user-visible strings, and no silent-loss paths are touched.

Already raised, left alone (2):

  • The fixtures are computed with the same EquidistantCylindrical the reader uses, so the test cannot catch a shared projection error. The CodeRabbit thread raised this, and the maintainer answered that crates/geom/src/eqc.rs has independent checks (meridian_distance_matches_its_integral, epsg_guidance_note_example). I confirmed both tests exist, so the answer holds.
  • The comment saying the unread transformation is 23 (resolved, and fixed in this PR).

No inline comments posted.
