Summary

Adds Lao (lo) localization support for RustGIS:

  • Added Lao translation catalog (crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/lo.tsv).
  • Registered lo with Script::Alphabetic in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs (expanded LANGUAGES from 20 to 21).
  • Added locale tag resolution test cases for lo-LA and lo_LA.UTF-8 in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tests.rs.
  • Updated supported languages count and table in docs/i18n.md.

Testing

  • Catalog syntax, errors, and placeholders verified via every_catalog_parses_cleanly_and_keeps_placeholders test.
  • Tested locale tag resolution in lookup_fallback_and_tags.

UI evidence

No visible UI change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added Lao as an available interface language, including support for common Lao locale tags.
    • Added Lao text rendering support when a compatible font is available on the system.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the interface language count and language list to include Lao.

Walkthrough

The language registry and documentation now include Lao (lo). Locale-tag tests cover two Lao tag formats. Lao scripts map to fonts discovered from platform-specific candidate paths.

Changes: Lao interface language and font support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register Lao and document support
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tests.rs, docs/i18n.md
The registry adds Lao with its Lao and English names, script, and lo.tsv catalog. Tests check that lo_LA.UTF-8 and lo-LA resolve to lo. Documentation updates the supported-language count to 21 and adds Lao to the list.
Discover and select Lao fonts
crates/render/src/fonts.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
Lao scripts map to ScriptFont::Lao. Font discovery checks ordered Windows, macOS, and Linux paths, then selects the first face containing the specified Lao glyphs and Latin A and z.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: adding a Lao (lo) translation catalog to the i18n system, plus the documentation update. The changeset adds the Lao catalog registration in mod.rs, locale-tag tests, fonts support, and the docs count change. The title is concise, specific, and accurate. It does not mention the font discovery or the script-region mapping, which are real parts of the change but secondary to the main point.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the Summary and Testing sections, and it states that the UI section has no visible change, as the template requires. It lists the catalog, the Script::Alphabetic registration, the tests, and the docs update. It does not mention the font-discovery changes in crates/render/src/fonts.rs or the script_region mapping in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs. Those changes appear in the raw summary but not in the description. The Related issue section is left as the template placeholder comment, which the author did not fill in. The Testing section also does not name the locale-tag tests as a separate run with a command. These gaps are non-critical, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 4 files.

Add the ScriptFont::Lao variant and move its arm into script_font,
drop the duplicate Script::Alphabetic arm, and give Script::Lao a doc
comment. The Windows candidates now include Leelawadee UI (plain
Leelawadee has Thai only), Linux adds the Arch and Fedora Noto paths
and DejaVu Sans, and the coverage check no longer requires Latin
letters: the face falls back after the interface face. The web app has
no hosted Lao face yet. Docs: Lao goes last in the table, with a font
note.

The catalog test requires placeholder text to match the English, as
the other catalogs keep it; also drops a trailing space.

The interface in Lao (ui.language set to lo) on Linux, where Noto Sans Lao is found as the script face, framed on the World Atlas sample over Europe. Rendered headless with ui_shot from f5027a7. The ribbon, panes, search boxes and status bar draw Lao text; strings the catalog doesn't cover yet (the strings added on main since it was written) fall back to English.

Thank you for the Lao catalog, @bounkirdni-2025! It is a welcome addition, and the interface reads well in Lao (screenshots in the comment above).

I pushed two fixes to your branch, plus merges of main:

  • b7142e4: the font fallback didn't compile (the ScriptFont::Lao arm sat outside script_font, the variant was missing, and lib.rs had a duplicate Alphabetic arm). The Windows candidates now use Leelawadee UI (LeelawUI.ttf), since plain Leelawadee has Thai letters only; Linux adds the Arch and Fedora Noto Sans Lao paths and DejaVu Sans. The coverage check no longer asks for Latin letters: Noto Sans Lao has none, and the Lao face falls back after the interface face, which draws Latin. The docs table lists Lao last, with a note on the font.
  • 5957271: one entry translated the placeholder {"path": a project file}, which the catalog test requires to stay as in English.

About 290 strings added on main since the catalog was written fall back to English for now; they get translated with the other languages before the next release. The one red check (planetary_crs tests) fails on main too and is unrelated to this change.

Thank you so much @giswqs! 🙏🇱🇦

Seeing the live web preview with native Lao script rendering so smoothly across the ribbons, map panels, and the World Atlas is honestly breathtaking!

(Also, seeing you instantly silence @coderabbitai with @coderabbitai approve was absolute gold! Made my day! 🐰🤫)

Huge thanks for stepping in to push those font fallback adjustments (Leelawadee UI / Linux paths) and polishing the {path} placeholder test. That was super thoughtful and made the whole integration butter-smooth.

I will definitely keep an eye on upstream to pick up the remaining ~290 strings and any new additions before the next release. Truly honored to contribute to RustGIS! 🚀🗺️

## Translating

Each non-English language is a UTF-8 catalog of `English<TAB>Translation` lines in
`crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/<code>.tsv`. English is the source language and has no catalog. Blank lines
and lines beginning with `#` are ignored. Within either field, `\n`, `\t` and `\\` represent a
line break, tab and backslash. A missing entry shows in English, so translations can grow one
line at a time, and corrections from native speakers are welcome.
