Add e2e UI tests for login, profiles and connection

Adds a UI test target that drives the unmodified app through its UI, the way a user would. App code is not changed: no accessibility identifiers, no test hooks, no launch arguments. Elements are found by their visible labels.

The tests are run by the private netbirdio/mobile-e2e repo (ios-e2e workflow) on a physical iPhone attached to a self-hosted Mac. They can also be run from Xcode.

What's added

  • Target NetBirdUITests (bundle io.netbird.app.uitests) in NetBird.xcodeproj.
  • Scheme NetBirdE2E and test plan E2E.xctestplan, with a screen recording per test.
  • NetBirdUITests/Support/:
    • AppLaunch.swift: launching the app and handling system prompts (VPN configuration, notifications, the SSO sign-in alert);
    • Screens.swift: page objects for Connection, Profiles, New Profile, VPN On Demand and the tab bar;
    • E2ETestCase.swift: the base class. Each test creates its own e2e-<random> profiles and removes them when it passes. Leftovers from a failed run are cleaned up before the next test.

Tests (30)

Group Cases
Smoke SMOKE-001: switching through all tabs
Setup-key login E2E-001: login with a setup key via the UI, connect without a browser (also covers LOGIN-A02, D01)
Basic flows LOGIN-S02 logout, S03 switch to a new profile, S04 switch between existing profiles
Login required LOGIN-A01, A03, A04
Browser login LOGIN-B01 (disabled, see below), B02, B03, B04
New Profile validation LOGIN-D02 – D06
Server config LOGIN-E01, E03
Profile management LOGIN-F01, F02, F04, F05
Logout LOGIN-G01, G03
Connection LOGIN-H01 – H05

Running locally

  1. Select the NetBirdE2E scheme and a physical iPhone. In the Simulator, tests that connect are skipped, since VPN configurations can't be saved there.
  2. Set TEST_RUNNER_NB_SETUP_KEY to a setup key of the test account. In Xcode it goes in the scheme's environment for the test action, in CI it is an env var for xcodebuild.
  3. Run the E2E test plan.

On the phone: Settings → Developer → Enable UI Automation on, Auto-Lock off, and don't touch the phone during a run.

Known app issues found by the tests

  • LOGIN-B01 is disabled. Cancelling the SSO sign-in shows a "Login failed" alert. cancelLogin() stops the SDK's token wait, the SDK reports that as an error, and NetworkExtensionAdapter shows it without checking that the user cancelled. The other tests close this alert and note it in the results. Remove the XCTSkip in testB01 once this is fixed.
  • Connect toggle can drop a tap. For about 3 s after connect or disconnect the toggle is locked (buttonLock in MainViewModel), and a tap in that window is dropped silently. The tests wait and retry, and record in the results when a retry was needed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added an automated iOS UI test suite covering connection and login flows, profile creation and management, server settings, navigation, and VPN On Demand behavior.
    • Added checks for input validation, profile and server persistence across relaunches, and setup-key authentication.
    • Expanded coverage of sign-in cancellation and retries, profile switching and logout, connection state changes, server availability, and tab navigation.
    • Added checks that rejected profile inputs are not saved and signed-out profiles prompt for sign-in when connecting.

…target with the NetBirdE2E scheme and the E2E test plan (screen recording on). The tests drive the unmodified app through its UI: setup-key login (E2E-001), a tab bar smoke test and 28 cases of the login test plan: login required, browser login and cancel, profile form validation, server config, profile management, logout and connection. LOGIN-B01 is disabled until a cancelled login stops showing "Login failed".

Walkthrough

The pull request adds an Xcode UI-test target, an E2E scheme and test plan, shared test helpers, and UI tests for NetBird app workflows. It also adds a pull-request workflow that can dispatch E2E requests to a configured repository.

Changes: NetBird iOS E2E UI tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
UI-test target and E2E configuration
NetBird.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj, NetBird.xcodeproj/xcshareddata/xcschemes/NetBirdE2E.xcscheme, NetBirdUITests/E2E.xctestplan
The project adds the NetBirdUITests target, product, and dependency on NetBird, with Debug and Release configurations. The shared scheme uses the E2E test plan. Project references are reorganized, and a duplicate framework build-file reference is removed.
Shared UI-test support
NetBirdUITests/Support/*
Helpers launch the app, handle system and sign-in alerts, interact with profiles and connection controls, reset device state, and record test steps and screenshots.
Profile lifecycle and configuration tests
NetBirdUITests/LoginBaselineTests.swift, NetBirdUITests/ProfileManagementTests.swift, NetBirdUITests/LogoutTests.swift, NetBirdUITests/ProfileFormValidationTests.swift, NetBirdUITests/ServerConfigTests.swift
Tests cover profile creation and switching, login state after logout, profile removal actions, form validation, and server configuration across relaunches and rejected submissions.
Authentication and connection tests
NetBirdUITests/ConnectionTests.swift, NetBirdUITests/LoginBrowserTests.swift, NetBirdUITests/LoginRequiredTests.swift, NetBirdUITests/SetupKeyAuthTests.swift
Tests cover sign-in prompts and cancellation, setup-key authentication, connection and disconnection, repeated connection cycles, peer details, On Demand behavior, and connection state after relaunch. testB01_cancellingTheLoginAbortsCleanly skips before its remaining checks.
Tab navigation test
NetBirdUITests/TabBarNavigationTests.swift
The test visits available tabs in forward and reverse order, checks tab selection and screen markers, and retains screenshots.

E2E workflow dispatch

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pull-request dispatch
.github/workflows/e2e-trigger.yml
The workflow sends an iOS E2E repository-dispatch event for eligible same-repository, non-draft pull requests when the dispatch token is set.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 3af3d

The dispatch destination appears corrected. Previously identified UI-test reliability, coverage, and setup-key exposure concerns remain open and should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 3c27d

The new tests enter enrollment credentials into a visible field while retaining screen captures. The dispatch workflow also defaults to a repository outside the organization destination described in the PR. Fork restrictions limit exposure, but downstream credential protection, execution isolation, and failure cleanup remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new authenticated tests type NB_SETUP_KEY into an existing unmasked TextField while the new plan prefers video capture and keeps UI screenshots. This creates a potential path from enrollment authority into retained test results. The plaintext field predates the PR; its automated use with retained capture is new. Credential recovery from actual results and subsequent reuse are not verified, and depend on capture behavior, result access, and key validity.
  • Low · architecture · observed: When E2E_REPO is unset and the dispatch token is available, the new workflow targets evgeniyChepelev/mobile-e2e rather than the netbirdio/mobile-e2e destination described in the PR. This silently changes the owner receiving execution requests and PR metadata. Effective configuration and whether this alternative owner is approved are unknown; the token is used against GitHub's API, not disclosed to the destination owner by this request.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The potential credential exposure reaches the authority of the supplied enrollment key and any enrolled device access it permits. The execution boundary also includes the destination repository and its Mac/iPhone service. The available evidence does not establish production access, tenant scope, peer-network permissions, dispatch-token permissions, or access to signing credentials.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A reader of retained captures could potentially recover a setup key rendered during enrollment and reuse it if still valid. This is a source-supported disclosure path, not confirmation of an exposed recording or successful unauthorized enrollment.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The supplied sender blocks fork-origin PRs and performs no local checkout or test execution. It forwards same-repository PR identity to another repository. Those controls narrow the trigger population but do not demonstrate downstream approval, immutable-SHA checkout, sandboxing, or protection of secrets from modified test code.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A failure after connection can preserve an authenticated profile and active VPN until later recovery. Prefix-wide cleanup can also affect another run if the device is shared concurrently. Successful cleanup, setup-time recovery, and the On Demand test's unconditional teardown reduce this risk, but external device locking and post-interruption cleanup remain unproven.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use isolated, short-lived enrollment authority and prevent credential-bearing capture from becoming broadly readable test output. Confirm capture behavior and result access before enabling retained recordings for authenticated flows.
  • proposed — Require an explicitly approved dispatch destination and establish receiver-side provenance checks, least-privilege credentials, exclusive device allocation, and interruption-safe cleanup. Preserve debugging evidence without depending on a live authenticated VPN remaining connected.

Assert that the Connection screen shows its VPN control.

Keep LOGIN-B01 running as an expected failure.

LOGIN-B01 currently skips before its cancellation flow and assertions, so it cannot detect when the cancellation bug is fixed.

Unlike B02–B04, B01 calls SignInAlert.cancel() directly. Its XCTAssertEqual(app.alerts.count, 0, ...) can therefore observe the undismissed "Login failed" alert. Select the Connection tab before the polling loop.

OnDemandScreen.open() selects Settings, and ConnectionScreen.state returns "" when the toggle is not visible. The loop can therefore miss a connection that starts and ends during the 30-second window. The test selects Connection only after the loop.

Add requireDevice() so the Simulator run skips this test.

testLoginWithSetupKeyViaUi connects at Line 30. The PR states that tests which connect are skipped in the Simulator, because VPN configurations cannot be saved there. Every other connecting test calls try requireDevice() first. This test does not.

In the Simulator, the test fails at "Connected" instead of skipping. This also breaks the E2ETestCase convention.

Make SignInAlert.isShowing race-safe by reading a snapshot.

button(_:) enumerates alert.buttons.allElementsBoundByIndex and then reads $0.label on each live element. If the alert closes between the enumeration and the label read, XCTest records a failure ("no matches found"). The comment on SystemAlerts.acceptIfPresent already describes this hazard and avoids it with snapshot().

isShowing is polled in tight loops: reacted(from:within:), waitForState, connectExpectingLogin and acceptIfPresent. The system alert can close at any time. Use the same snapshot approach here.

Review comment at @NetBirdUITests/Support/AppLaunch.swift around lines 89 - 95:
Update SignInAlert.isShowing to determine whether both button-label sets are
present using labels read from a single alert snapshot, rather than button(_:)
enumerating live elements and reading their labels; return false when no
snapshot is available. Preserve button(_:) for the separate cancel action.

Sensitive Data Exposure

The E2E video records the setup key in clear text. The test enters NB_SETUP_KEY in a plain text field, and NetBirdE2E selects a test plan with video capture. Use a single-use, short-lived key and restrict access to E2E result bundles. Skipping screenshots does not prevent exposure while video capture remains enabled.

Update the E2E setup flow around field.typeText so NB_SETUP_KEY is a single-use,
short-lived key, and restrict access to NetBirdE2E result bundles containing
video recordings. Ensure the key is not exposed in clear text in captured video;
skipping screenshots alone is insufficient while video capture remains enabled.

Reset VPN On Demand before navigating.

Dismissing the current “Authentication required” alert does not clear the enabled On Demand state. The polling path can raise the alert again while the disconnected VPN still appears connected. Disable On Demand after launch, then dismiss any alert produced during the reset.

Require Resources on unmanaged test devices.

A missing Resources tab is treated as an MDM restriction, so the smoke test also passes if a regression removes the tab on an unmanaged device. Assert its presence on unmanaged devices, or verify the policy separately before omitting it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update the Resources tab check in the smoke test to require Resources to be
present on unmanaged test devices; do not treat its absence as an expected MDM

Autocorrect can append a suggestion to the name field when focus moves
to the setup key field, so the profile was created under another name
and F01 could not find it. fill() now checks the field and retypes it.
