Description

A network outage can be mistaken for expired login by the extension’s startup preflight. Leave authentication to the engine, which retries transport failures and still reports actual authentication denial. Remove the redundant loginVerified start option and update its app callers.

Split from #235 at the maintainer’s request in netbirdio/netbird#7716 (comment). This PR changes login handling only; network monitoring and ICE/P2P recovery remain unchanged.

Depends on netbirdio/netbird#8202. Merge core first, then replace the submodule pin with its upstream merge commit if squashed.

Verification

The iOS SDK builds and all 58 simulator tests pass. Companion core authentication tests pass with the race detector. Live offline-startup and expired-credential flows on a physical device remain unverified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • VPN startup now relies on the connection engine to handle authentication and retry temporary transport failures, rather than failing based on an initial login check.
    • Authentication denials are reported by the engine during connection startup.

📝 Walkthrough

The app no longer passes a login-verified option when starting the VPN. The packet tunnel provider no longer checks login state before startup. The updated comments describe engine retries for transport failures and engine reporting of authentication denial.

Changes: VPN Login Startup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove login-verified start option
NetBird/Source/App/Views/iOS/iOSConnectionView.swift, NetbirdKit/GlobalConstants.swift, NetbirdKit/NetworkExtensionAdapter.swift
The VPN start method no longer accepts or sends the login-verified option. Login-success call sites use the parameterless start. The login URL continuation now declares its type explicitly.
Remove extension login preflight
NetbirdNetworkExtension/PacketTunnelProvider.swift, netbird-core
The packet tunnel provider no longer checks login state before startup or fails startup with error 1001 when login is required. The netbird-core submodule pointer is updated.

Startup authentication handling appears intact. Confirm the core dependency’s final commit and update the pin if needed before merging.

A rabbit watches login’s door,
The tunnel starts without a flag.
The engine tries when transport fails,
It reports denied auth in turn.
I thump my paws beside the path,
And nibble greens to celebrate.

Update the netbird-core pin after #8202 merges.

The pinned commit is not an ancestor of upstream main. If #8202 is squashed, replace the gitlink with the commit produced by that merge before merging this PR.
