implements the io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks extension as defined in SEP-2663, while preserving full backward compatibility with existing 2025-11-25 clients.
the SEP-2663 redesigns async tasks as a proper MCP extension. rather than requiring clients to opt-in per-request via params.task, the server decides whether to create a task based on whether the client declared the extension in per-request _meta.
three structural problems in the 2025-11-25 experimental spec are resolved: the fragile per-request opt-in, the blocking tasks/result SSE trap, and the security risk of tasks/list without sessions.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The PR adds SEP-2663 task support with modern and legacy wire formats. It adds client tasks/update support, task result parsing, capability checks, server input-response handling, task notifications, and update-specific hooks. It also updates the task example and adds documentation and tests for task authorization and lifecycle behavior.
Changes

mark3labs/mcp-go#1093: Both changes modify task lifecycle hooks and cancellation behavior.
Suggested reviewers: ezynda3
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 97197
Resolve the task input-flow and wire-compatibility defects before merging: affected clients can lose interactive tool functionality or reject task responses. Task retention and misleading authorization guidance also need attention. Legacy status notifications remain available.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 552d4
A client that knows a task ID may be able to retrieve another client's task result or cancel its work through the new protocol path. The new automatic task route can also skip configured tool-input validation. Exposure depends on how the server is deployed and whether task IDs become known to other clients.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: Modern task access relies on a session-ownership check that accepts empty requester IDs. A caller knowing another client's task ID can use the new result-bearing tasks/get path; update is additionally reachable if that task enters input_required. Modern cancellation also uses this lookup, although cancellation was already reachable in some legacy-capability configurations.
Medium · security · observed: Declaring the tasks extension now automatically routes eligible tool calls around configured input-schema validation before their handlers execute. The task path already omitted that validation, but previously required per-request task selection.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A known task ID can address task state within the same server instance across session boundaries. The maximum exposure depends on which clients and tenants share that instance; no cross-instance store is established by the inspected evidence.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A modern caller can self-declare task support and supply a known task ID. The empty-session lookup then permits result retrieval regardless of a nonempty creator session; modern cancellation uses the same lookup. Different nonempty session IDs are rejected, and task IDs are generated as UUID v4.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Extension declaration checks protocol support, not task ownership. Modern HTTP validates protocol headers and version but does not create a persistent session ID for ownership checks.
observed — Task-status notifications include IDs and are broadcast to initialized sessions rather than filtered by owner. This disclosure path already existed for the legacy status method; active subscription filters block the inspected task notification methods.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Completion and cancellation serialize terminal-state changes under the task lock and guard against double completion. That control does not establish requester ownership or consumption of updated input.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind task access and notifications to a verified caller identity suitable for sessionless modern requests, and enforce that binding for reads, updates, and cancellation.
proposed — Apply configured input-schema validation before either synchronous or task execution, with validation failures represented in the appropriate task contract.

The title "feat: add SEP-2663 Tasks Extension" names the main change. The changeset implements the io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks extension from SEP-2663, including server-directed task creation, the tasks/update method, and the new wire format. The title is short, specific, and uses a conventional commit prefix.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template structure. It has a Description section that explains the SEP-2663 change and links issue #980. It also fills in the Type of Change, Checklist, and MCP Spec Compliance sections with the spec link. The checklist leaves two items unchecked: adding tests and updating documentation. The author notes that test cases will be added soon. The Additional Information section still contains template comments only. The README changes in the summary suggest documentation was added, so the unchecked documentation box is inconsistent with the changes. The description is mostly complete, so the check passes, but the author should reconcile the checklist.
Resolution
Consider these updates before merge: check the test and documentation checklist items once the tests and README changes are confirmed, or explain why they remain unchecked. Remove the template comment in Additional Information if it does not apply. Replace the statement that test cases will be added soon with a list of the test files that now exist.

Explanation
[#980] Requirement: implement SEP-2663 with a dual-path design that keeps 2025-11-25 clients working. The reviewed summary shows this implementation across the whole PR (merge base 8824682 to head 97197e7):
Modern detection: ClientCapabilities.HasExtension in mcp/types.go checks for the io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks key. server/server.go uses it to decide server-directed task creation for modern requests. server/sep2663_test.go covers this path.
Legacy path: legacy params.task handling and nested task wire format are kept. CreateTaskResult unmarshals both nested legacy and inline SEP-2663 fields.
Modern responses: tasks/get inlines results, failures, and input requests. tasks/cancel returns an acknowledgement. tasks/update is added for modern requests only. Legacy requests get METHOD_NOT_FOUND for tasks/update.
Notifications: notifications/tasks is used, with both legacy and SEP-2663 TTL and poll-interval field names.
Tests: server/sep2663_test.go, updated task wire-format and task tests, and HTTP lifecycle tests cover modern and legacy behavior.
The PR description says tests will be added. The summary shows test files, so this is not a gap. server/internal/gen/data.go and server/internal/gen/request_handler.go.tmpl are in ignored_files (rule !**/gen/**) and were not inspected. The tasks/update and tasks/get behavior is established by reviewable summaries of server/request_handler.go and server/server.go, so the result does not depend on the excluded files. One point is unverified: NewCreateTaskResult now sets Legacy: true, and the summary notes the SEP wire format uses Legacy=false. The modern wire-format tests in server/sep2663_test.go cover the resulting behavior, so this does not establish a failure.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed changes map to #980 or to the SEP-2663 task feature this PR implements:
Protocol types and parsers (mcp/types.go, mcp/utils.go, mcp/result.go, mcp/tasks.go) add SEP-2663 fields, tasks/update types, ExtensionTasks, and ResultTypeTask. The client UpdateTask method is the client side of tasks/update.
Server changes (server/server.go, server/request_handler.go, server/hooks.go) add the modern task handling, options (WithTasksExtension, WithDefaultTaskTTL), and update hooks.
Test changes cover the new behavior. The auth contract tests and README authorization notes document task access behavior, which the SEP security section requires. These are supporting changes, not unrelated product behavior.
examples/task_tool/main.go is a task example. The PR objectives list task examples as part of this work. Its changes to input validation and helper code are part of that example, not separate product behavior.
No change is shown to be unrelated to #980 or the task feature. The excluded server/internal/gen files were not inspected, and no out-of-scope conclusion depends on them.

Require an exact session match for session-owned tasks.
Modern requests use an empty session ID. The current predicate rejects only a different non-empty session, so a known task ID can access a session-owned task through tasks/get, tasks/update, or tasks/cancel. Require entry.sessionID == sessionID whenever entry.sessionID is non-empty.

CreateTaskResult.MarshalJSON uses the legacy nested format when Legacy is true. This exported constructor therefore emits nested task JSON instead of the modern inline Tasks-extension format. Callers using the constructor cannot produce modern task results.

Serialize modern task hints with SEP-2663 field names.
When IsModernRequest(ctx) is true, this route returns mcp.GetTaskResult with the embedded mcp.Task. That type serializes TTL as ttl and PollInterval as pollInterval. SEP-2663 requires ttlMs and pollIntervalMs, so compliant clients can miss task hints when either value is set. Apply a modern-only response representation and retain the existing legacy representation.

Please document the accepted asynchronous-task request-context limitation for HTTP transports and add an HTTP lifecycle test showing what happens after the initial response completes, including cancellation behavior and supported transport guidance.
Thanks for picking this up. We'd like to build on it for long-running tool calls behind an MCP gateway, so we tried it against the spec and hit a few things that look related to the maintainer's request above:
Task context ends with the request. The task context derives from the request context (server/server.go:2347, 2439). Over Streamable HTTP, a 500 ms tool ends cancelled ("context canceled") right after the POST returns. A context detached from the request (e.g. context.WithoutCancel plus its own cancel func for tasks/cancel) would let the work outlive the response, which is the point of a task.
No authorization on tasks/*. The only check is the session-ID comparison (server.go:2990, 3020), which passes when either ID is empty, so on stateless HTTP any caller with a task ID can get, update or cancel it. The SEP requires an auth check on every task request. A hook that receives the request context when a task is created and on each tasks/* call would let servers bind tasks to their own identity.
tasks/get field names. The embedded Task serialises ttl / pollInterval instead of ttlMs / pollIntervalMs (mcp/types.go:1869).
AddTaskTool result.json.Marshal(storedResult) (server.go:2616) serialises the *CreateTaskResult, so a completed task returns "result":{"task":{}} and the content is lost.
tasks/cancel on a terminal task returns an error (server.go:3114); the SEP says the server acks it.
Mcp-Name isn't set or checked for tasks/* (mcp/headers.go is untouched).
Smaller: there's no way to update statusMessage from running work, and modern-mode tasks get no TTL, so they're never evicted. Happy to help test a revision.
Please document the accepted asynchronous-task request-context limitation for HTTP transports and add an HTTP lifecycle test showing what happens after the initial response completes, including cancellation behavior and supported transport guidance.
while working on the examples/task_tool demo, I discovered that executeTaskTool derives its context from the per-request ctx passed by HandleMessage, not from s.serverCtx.
because HandleMessage defers a cancel on that ctx, task goroutines are cancelled immediately after the response is written on every transport, not just Streamable HTTP.
updated the comments and readme, and added test cases to cover the changes.

fixed issue 1 and 3. issue 2 and 6 appear to be by design. I'll look into issue 4 and 5 shortly.
Thanks for resolving the conflicts and task-lifecycle issues! Modern tasks/get still appears to emit ttl/pollInterval rather than ttlMs/pollIntervalMs. Could you check that? We’ll also need to settle the task-ownership contract before merging.
Sorry—that wording was mine, not terminology from SEP-2663. I meant the SDK’s rules for deciding who may access or modify a task, rather than ownership of the background goroutine or its context.
Auth binding. Servers MUST perform authentication and authorization checks on each task-related request to ensure that the client has permission to access a task.
The SEP leaves the application’s permission model open and explicitly permits sufficiently unguessable task IDs to serve as bearer tokens. So I’m not asking for a new protocol field, mandatory user identity, or session binding.
What we need to make explicit is how this implementation supports that requirement. Currently, the task lookup checks session IDs only when both IDs are nonempty. Without a session, possession of the task ID effectively grants access.
Before merging, let’s clarify whether that bearer-token behavior is the intended default, and how applications needing user- or tenant-bound access can enforce authorization on every task operation. That could be through existing middleware or an authorization callback; it doesn’t necessarily require a new API. We should document the chosen behavior and test the relevant allowed/denied access cases.
That’s what I meant by settling the “contract”—making the SDK/application security responsibilities explicit, not introducing an additional SEP requirement.

Hi @ezynda3 , I have documented the task authorization in the README and updated the test cases accordingly. Could you please take a look at the commit when you get a chance? Thanks.

Add a wire-level test for a positive ttlMs in the modern create response.
The modern create-response test in server/task_response_format_test.go sends no task TTL. It only checks that ttlMs is absent. No test in this file asserts that a positive task TTL appears as ttlMs in the resultType: "task" response. A regression that drops the TTL from this response would not fail a test.
Add a case that configures a positive task TTL for the modern create path. Assert that result["ttlMs"] equals that value.

Add a Streamable HTTP test for SEP-2663 _meta task creation.
The HTTP lifecycle tests create tasks only through the legacy params.task field. No HTTP test sends a task-creating request with SEP-2663 _meta. No HTTP test covers task completion or cancellation on that path. The _meta creation test in server/sep2663_test.go:29-46 runs in-process through HandleMessage.
Add a test that:
Creates the server with WithTasksExtension(), as server/sep2663_test.go:32 does.
Sends a task-creating request over HTTP with modernTaskMeta() as _meta, using postModernWithMeta (server/streamable_http_modern_test.go:44).
Checks that the task completes and that tasks/cancel moves it to a terminal status.

Review comment at @server/task_http_lifecycle_test.go around lines 31 - 37:
Add an HTTP lifecycle test for SEP-2663 task creation using `_meta`. Create the
server with `WithTasksExtension()`, send the task-creating request through
`postModernWithMeta` with `modernTaskMeta()`, and verify the task completes and
a `tasks/cancel` request leaves it in a terminal status.
Block the lifecycle test handlers until the test releases them.
Both tests pass if executeTaskTool runs synchronously. The working snapshot is taken before the handler starts. The handler finishes within the 2-second wait, so the first test passes. In the in-process test, HandleMessage returns only after the handler completes. The later cancelReq() then has no effect. Neither test checks that the response returns while the handler is still running.
Gate the first handler on a release channel. The handler then cannot complete before the test reads the response:
If the response is synchronous, the POST blocks until the test timeout. The request-context cancellation check still applies. If the request context ends before release, the ctx.Done() branch returns and handlerCompleted never closes.
Apply the same gate to the in-process test. Call HandleMessage in a goroutine, and require that it returns before the handler is released. Then cancel the request context and release the handler:
select {
case <-ctx.Done():
return nil, ctx.Err()
- case <-time.After(200 * time.Millisecond):+ case <-release:
close(handlerCompleted)
- srv.HandleMessage(sessionCtx, msg)+ handlerReturned := make(chan struct{})+ go func() {+ srv.HandleMessage(sessionCtx, msg)+ close(handlerReturned)+ }()+ select {+ case <-handlerReturned:+ case <-time.After(2 * time.Second):+ t.Fatal("HandleMessage did not return while the task handler was blocked")+ }
// Cancel the request context immediately.
cancelReq()
+ close(release)
A synchronous implementation then fails with a clear message, and it no longer depends on the 200 ms timer.

Update the HTTP and in-process lifecycle tests so their task handlers wait on a
release channel instead of a timer, ensuring the response is verified while the
handler is still blocked. In the in-process test, run HandleMessage
asynchronously and require it to return before releasing the handler; then
cancel the request context and release the handler, preserving the existing
cancellation checks.
TestTaskHTTPLifecycle_CancelViaTasksCancel waits only for a terminal task status. cancelTaskEntry sets the status under tasksMu and then calls entry.cancelFunc after unlocking. If that cancel() call were removed, the status check would still pass, and the test would pass while the handler remains blocked on <-ctx.Done(). Wait for the handler to return after the status check. The sibling lifecycle test already uses a completion signal for its handler.

Route input_required results on the task path to a supported input flow.
Optional tools called by extension-declaring modern clients now run through executeRegularToolAsTask. That function stores a returned input_required result as a completed task. The task never enters input_required, so tasks/update rejects the client's answer. Before this change, the synchronous path let the client's CallTool loop answer the request. Fix this by implementing the input_required task flow, or by returning such results synchronously.

Require the Tasks extension before routing task-only tools for modern requests.
For a modern request without the Tasks extension, the task-only branch still sends a call with params.task to task creation. The created task cannot be read or cancelled by that client, because tasks/get and tasks/cancel require the extension. Only the legacy case should use the params.task check.

Register analyze_data with AddTool so its optional task support has a synchronous path.
analyze_data declares TaskSupportOptional, but AddTaskTool registers only the task handler. Calls without params.task fail with "does not support synchronous execution" from legacy clients and from modern clients that do not declare the tasks extension. Modern clients that declare the extension are routed to the task path even without params.task.
Registering the tool with AddTool serves both modes. A regular tool with optional task support runs through the same registered handler in both the synchronous path and the task path. AddTool and AddTaskTool cannot register the same name, so replace the call instead of adding a second registration.

Description
implements the io.modelcontextprotocol/tasks extension as defined in SEP-2663, while preserving full backward compatibility with existing 2025-11-25 clients.
the SEP-2663 redesigns async tasks as a proper MCP extension. rather than requiring clients to opt-in per-request via params.task, the server decides whether to create a task based on whether the client declared the extension in per-request _meta.
three structural problems in the 2025-11-25 experimental spec are resolved: the fragile per-request opt-in, the blocking tasks/result SSE trap, and the security risk of tasks/list without sessions.
