Description

  • Route human-readable diagnostics from maintained STDIO server examples and guides to standard error.
  • Cover server errors, the advanced guide's custom logger and sampling message, and the STDIO startup message.
  • Keep the roots notification handler nonblocking by omitting its optional diagnostic write.

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • Documentation update

Checklist

  • My code follows the code style of this project
  • I have performed a self-review of my own code
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works
  • I have updated the documentation accordingly

Fixes #1193.

Validation

  • go test ./examples/roots_server ./examples/structured_input_and_output ./examples/typed_tools (all three packages compiled; no test files)
  • gofmt -d on the three changed Go example files (clean)
  • git diff --check (clean)

The full workspace suite was not run for this documentation and example-output change.

Walkthrough

STDIO server examples and guides now direct human-readable errors, logger output, notices, and startup messages to standard error. The roots notification handler no longer prints notification methods.

Explanation

[#1193] The listed server errors, startup message, logger, and sampling diagnostic now use stderr. The roots notification handler omits its diagnostic, so it cannot write to stdout or block on that write. The reported Go tests compiled the three changed example packages; they have no test files.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template: it has a Description section that lists the changes, a Type of Change section with Bug fix and Documentation update checked, a Checklist with the self-review and documentation items checked, and a Fixes #1193 reference. It also adds a Validation section, which the template does not require. The only unchecked item is the test checkbox, which the author leaves open because the changed example packages have no test files. The MCP Spec Compliance and Additional Information sections are omitted, which is acceptable because they apply only to spec features and optional notes. The description is specific and matches the raw summary and the linked issue scope. The description is mostly complete, so it passes.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 3 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add a regression test for notification streams.

The roots server package has no tests. If handleNotification writes to stdout again, the diagnostic can corrupt the JSON-RPC stream. Add a test that invokes the handler with a roots notification and checks stdout and stderr separately.

Add a regression test for handleNotification using a roots notification that
captures stdout and stderr separately; assert stdout remains free of diagnostic
output and the notification diagnostic is written to stderr. Use the package’s
existing test and stream-capture conventions.

- Line 15: Update the notification diagnostic in the roots notification handler
so it cannot block dispatch when stderr is undrained; use an established
bounded, nonblocking diagnostic path if available, or remove the diagnostic
write. Preserve notification processing regardless of stderr backpressure.

Review comments at @www/docs/pages/servers/advanced.mdx:
- Line 928: Add the missing os import to the client-capability example’s import
block so its use of os.Stderr compiles; leave the example’s behavior unchanged.
