Regarding the patterns:
In Kyrgyz, words are hyphenated according to their syllables. For Kyrgyz speakers, a syllable always begins with a consonant, except at the beginning of a word.
The following rules must be observed:
• No single letter appears at the beginning or end of a line.
• As in English, monosyllabic words [ат (horse), кой (sheep), кыз (girl), аюу (bear), …] are not hyphenated in Kyrgyz.
• Words containing long vowels must be hyphenated in such a way that the vowels remain together (e. g. yy-).
• Words with one of the four diphthongs я, ю, е, or ё are hyphenated according to their composition: окуя → оку|йа (event), куюн → ку|йун (tornado). → Probably something like:

• Words with suffixes can also be hyphenated.

@SpecialCharacter As an aside. If you are a Kyrgyz speaker, consider contributing a definition file for polyglossia, and revising and completing the current babel ini file (with babel, basically, adding captions).

Anyway, the invitation to improve the support that Kyrgyz already has on babel still stands — feel free to ask for help (for example, if you need rules for non-standard hyphenation with lualatex + babel, which seems to be a requirement).

@jbezos Thanks, actually Kyrgyz hat two sets of months – inherited Russian ones and new Kyrgyz ones (even if they are rarely used). How do I add a second set in the ini file? And how do I choose which ones are used?

luatex provides a built-in mechanism for changes in spelling, word-by.word. Here is an example using babel (I don’t use polyglossia, but converting it to this package should be trivial, I think):

Thank you for these notes. I’m a somewhat puzzled about the following:

• Words with one of the four diphthongs я, ю, е, or ё are divided according to their composition: окуя → оку|йа (event), куюн → ку|йун (tornado).

This seems a little strange. Aren’t я and йа two different spellings of the same thing? Why does hyphenation transform one into the other? Perhaps you meant окуя → окуй|а and куюн → куй|ун? I’m looking forward to the hyphenated word list, it should help clarify things.

@reutenauer Real Kyrgyz words do not have diphthongs. For hyphenation, these words have to be "kyrgyzified": окуя → оку|йа (й counts as consonant).

EDIT: Clarification, on certain occasions, йа turns into я and is "de-assembled" for hyphenation. Real diphthongs show up only in loan words.

I see. Is there perhaps a rule in Kyrgyz orthography that says that words can’t begin with ‘е’, ‘ё’, ‘ю’ or ‘я’?

2026-жылдын 22-январы would be a correct Kyrgyz date (note that the month is in genitive case).

EDIT: Does that mean I have to set the months in genitive case in the file? Or is it somehow done automatically?
