fix(sdk): verify no-limit vote queries against the page Drive proves - #5483
Conversation
Drive answers a proved vote query that names no limit with its default page (`default_query_limit`, 100) and proves that page. The client verifier rebuilt the query from the request with no limit, so it checked the proof against the whole range, and a proof of a full page failed with "Proof is missing data for query range". On testnet a contested resources query with no limit over the 1,033 DPNS contests failed this way. The verifier now checks the five proved vote queries (contested resources, contested resource vote state, voters for an identity, votes given by an identity, vote polls by end date) against the limit Drive applies: the request's, or `DEFAULT_QUERY_LIMIT` when the request names none. Requests are unchanged. A drive-abci test proves 101 contests with no limit, through contested resources and vote polls by end date, and checks that `FromProof` verifies the Drive part of each proof. Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
The fix correctly reconstructs the standard 100-result page across all five vote verifiers, and the regression test exercises the real node and FromProof paths. However, the fixed verifier limit introduces a regression for nodes configured to return larger default pages. Static verification covered head 53ffa52; current applicable CI checks pass, including Rust workspace tests, while PR Hygiene remains pending.

- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/src/proof.rs:2461-2466: Keep the prover and verifier limits aligned for configured nodes
DEFAULT_QUERY_LIMIT initializes DriveConfig.default_query_limit; it does not determine the effective limit of these handlers. All five vote handlers still resolve an omitted limit from the runtime configuration. For example, with default_query_limit = 200 and 101 matching contests, the server proves all 101 results. Previously, the unlimited verification query could verify that complete range; this helper now checks the same proof with a limit of 100. Drive calls GroveDb::verify_query, whose pinned Merk verifier rejects matching values beyond that limit with "Proof returns more data than limit". Thus the configurable-node case is not exclusively the pre-existing limitation described in the PR: this change breaks previously successful no-limit queries. Align the transmitted request and verification query on an explicit effective limit, or establish the same deterministic omitted-limit policy on both prover and verifier. Add coverage with a runtime default above 100 and a result count between the two limits; the existing document-sum tests already demonstrate why proved defaults must not depend on an assumption about operator configuration.
Out-of-scope follow-up suggestions (1)
These are valid observations, but they are outside this PR's scope and should be handled in separate issues or author/maintainer-requested PRs rather than blocking this review.
- Audit omitted-limit reconstruction on the remaining non-voting endpoints — The unchanged proposer-block-count, token pre-programmed-distribution, group-info, and group-action adapters forward omitted limits as None, while their server handlers substitute config.default_query_limit. Their Drive verifiers preserve the supplied limit, leaving the same bounded-proof versus unlimited-query mismatch when a response fills a page. These are concrete sibling defects, but this vote-specific change neither modifies nor depends on those endpoints.
- Follow-up: Track a separate audit of these four endpoints, with full-page regression cases and a prover/verifier effective-limit policy that also handles customized node configuration.

…efore a 100 page
The previous commit checked the proof of a vote query naming no limit
against a page of `DEFAULT_QUERY_LIMIT` (100) only. Drive takes that page
from the node's `default_query_limit`, which an operator can change and
the client cannot see: a node configured with a larger default proves the
whole range when it fits (say 101 contests under a default of 200), and
that proof verified against no limit before, but fails as a 100 page
("Proof returns more data than limit").
`verify_vote_query_page` now checks such a proof against the whole range
first, as the request reads, and only when that fails against a page of
`DEFAULT_QUERY_LIMIT`. Each check accepts only a proof complete for what
it checks, so every proof that verified before still does, and a full
page from a node keeping the default verifies too. Requests are
unchanged.
The drive-abci test now runs on a node with the standard default and on
one configured with a default of 200, each over 101 contests.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
At head 5d49af6, the complete diff fixes standard-default vote-query pages while preserving previously successful whole-range verification and Tenderdash authentication; the prior configured-node regression is fixed. One non-blocking suggestion remains: consolidate the retry policy with the helper now on the base branch and avoid enriching errors that a successful fallback discards. Validation was static only; current CI shows the JS build, WASM SDK tests, Kotlin tests, and Swift schema check passing, with Rust workspace tests and evo-sdk tests still running.

In `packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/src/proof.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/src/proof.rs:2486-2494: Share the page-verification policy and defer error enrichment
Base commit ad15fee2e0f0 (#5485) adds `verify::verify_page_drive_proves` for proposer, distribution, and group queries. It accepts the same explicit-limit or whole-range/default-page interpretations, but uses Drive errors internally and attempts the standard page first. Keeping this vote-only helper duplicates that compatibility policy with different attempt order and error precedence. There is also concrete avoidable work: for a truncated standard page, the unlimited attempt fails, and each changed caller's `.map_drive_error(proof, mtd)` clones the entire proof buffer into an error that remains alive during the successful second attempt and is then discarded (`error.rs:170–182`). Route the five vote paths through the shared helper, validating the envelope and resolving contracts outside the retry where possible, and apply `.map_drive_error` only to the final result. Standard-page-first verification with whole-range fallback still accepts the configured-default-200/101-result case. If whole-range-first diagnostics are intentional, make that an explicit option of the shared helper instead of maintaining two implementations. This is consolidation and allocation overhead, not a proof-correctness blocker.

…ge_drive_proves #5485 added `verify::verify_page_drive_proves` for the proposer, distribution and group queries, with the same policy this PR gave the vote queries: a request naming a limit is verified against it, and one naming none as the standard default page and then as the whole range. The five vote verifiers now use it instead of their own copy. Each one validates the proof envelope and resolves the contract once, outside the retry, and attaches the proof to a Drive error only for the final result, so a failed first attempt no longer clones the proof buffer. Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2
Independently reviewed the complete diff at 8c450b0 and found no actionable defects. All five vote verifiers reuse the shared page-verification policy, retain whole-range fallback and Tenderdash authentication, and defer error enrichment; both prior findings are fixed. Validation was static only: git diff --check passed, Kotlin SDK tests passed, and Rust workspace tests and the JavaScript build remain pending on this head.

Basic explanation
What this does: When an app asks Platform about masternode votes (for example "which DPNS names are being contested?") without saying how many answers it wants, Platform sends back at most 100 answers together with a cryptographic proof of those 100. The SDK then checked that proof as if it should cover every answer, not just the first 100, so whenever there were more than 100 it rejected a correct answer as an invalid proof. This PR makes the SDK accept either proof Platform can send: one covering every answer, as before, or one covering the first 100, the page size every node uses unless its operator changes it.
Value: Vote queries that name no limit work again on networks with more than 100 results. On testnet on 2026-10-18, listing the contested DPNS names with no limit fails today with "Proof is missing data for query range"; with this PR it returns the first page of 100 names. It covers all five proved vote queries in the Rust SDK, which the C FFI and the wasm SDK build on.
Risks: Low. Only client-side proof checking changes; nothing a node runs or stores changes, and requests are sent exactly as before. Every proof that verified before still verifies: a proof that is not a 100 page is still checked against the whole range, as before. Such a proof is checked twice, which costs one more local proof check. A node an operator configured with a default other than 100 still fails no-limit queries whose results overflow its default, as it does today. The two new drive-abci tests create 101 contests each and run in about 3 seconds.
Issue being fixed or feature implemented
Found while fixing the contested DPNS names helper in #5482:
ContestedResource::fetch_manywithVotePollsByDocumentTypeQuery { limit: None, .. }fails proof verification on testnet (DPNSGWRSAVFMjXx8HpQFaNJMqBV7MBgMK4br5UESsB4S31Ec,parentNameAndLabel, 1,033 contests):Every Drive handler of a proved vote query (
packages/rs-drive-abci/src/query/voting/*/v0/mod.rs) replaces a missing limit withconfig.default_query_limit(100) and proves the query withlimit: Some(100). The matchingFromProofimpls inpackages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/src/proof.rsrebuilt the Drive query from the request withTryFromRequest, which keeps the missing limit asNone, so GroveDB verified the proof of a 100-item page against an unlimited range. Results of 100 or fewer were unaffected, which is why the existing tests and test vectors never hit it.I found no open PR or issue for this (searched "missing data for query range", "contested resources limit proof", "default query limit proof verification", "limit none proof verification", "proof limit default", "vote polls by end date limit").
What was done?
packages/rs-drive-proof-verifier/src/proof.rs: the five vote verifiers verify throughverify::verify_page_drive_proves, the helper fix(sdk): verify no-limit proposer, distribution and group queries against the page Drive proves #5485 added for the proposer, distribution and group queries. A request naming a limit is verified against it; one naming none is verified as a page ofDEFAULT_QUERY_LIMITand, failing that, as the whole range, returning the page's error when both fail. The node takes a missing limit from its runtimedefault_query_limit, which the client cannot see: on a node keeping the default, a full page verifies only as a 100 page; on a node configured larger, a page holding every result verifies only as the whole range. Each check accepts only a proof complete for what it checks. Each verifier validates the proof envelope and resolves the contract once, outside the retry, and attaches the proof to an error only for the final result. The five vote verifiers:ContestedResources(GetContestedResourcesRequest)Contenders(GetContestedResourceVoteStateRequest)Voters(GetContestedResourceVotersForIdentityRequest)ResourceVotesByIdentity(GetContestedResourceIdentityVotesRequest)VotePollsGroupedByTimestamp(GetVotePollsByEndDateRequest)TryFromRequestinfrom_request.rsis left as a faithful wire conversion (its round-trip tests rely on that), and requests the SDK sends are unchanged. Sending an explicit count instead would change the requests the recorded SDK test vectors are keyed by, and nodes configured with a default below 100 would refuse it, where today they answer when their results fit.contests_requests_query::should_verify_a_full_default_page_of_contests_requested_with_no_limit(node default 100) andshould_verify_every_contest_requested_with_no_limit_from_a_node_with_a_larger_default(node default 200), a test-only change in drive-abci. Each creates 101 DPNS contests, then:count: Noneand checks it directly: on the default-100 node the proof fails against no limit and verifies as a page of exactly 100; on the default-200 node it verifies as all 101 and fails as a 100 page;ContestedResourcesandVotePollsGroupedByTimestampFromProofon the two no-limit proofs with a context provider that serves the DPNS contract and refuses quorum keys.FromProofchecks the GroveDB proof before the Tenderdash signature, soQuorumKeyUnavailablemeans the Drive part verified; before this PR both fail withGroveDBError.Same pattern, not changed here
These verifiers also pass a missing limit through while their Drive handlers default it to
default_query_limit. They are outside the vote family and were fixed separately in #5485 (merged), whose helper this PR now shares:ProposerBlockCounts(GetEvonodesProposedEpochBlocksByRangeRequest)GetTokenPreProgrammedDistributionsRequest)GetGroupInfosRequestandGetGroupActionsRequestBefore and after
