feat: Add persistent trade history with stable storage - #21
Conversation
Implements comprehensive trade history tracking that persists across canister upgrades.
## Backend Changes
### Stable Storage (6_INFRASTRUCTURE/stable_storage/mod.rs)
- Add `trade_history` field to StableState struct
- Update `save_state()` to accept and persist trade history
- Update `restore_state()` to return trade history
- Add logging for trade count during save/restore operations
### Rebalancing Module (1_CRITICAL_OPERATIONS/rebalancing/mod.rs)
- Add FULL_HISTORY thread-local for unlimited persistent storage
- Keep existing recent history (last 10 records) for fast queries
- Add `get_full_trade_history()` query function
- Add `load_history_from_stable()` for post-upgrade restoration
- Add `export_history_for_stable()` for pre-upgrade export
- Update `record_rebalance()` to write to both recent and full history
### Upgrade Hooks (lib.rs)
- Update `pre_upgrade()` to export and save trade history
- Update `post_upgrade()` to restore and load trade history
- Add logging for trade count in upgrade messages
### Query Endpoints (lib.rs)
- Add `get_trade_history()` - returns all trades since deployment
- Add `get_trade_history_paginated(offset, limit)` - returns page of trades with total count
### Candid Interface (icpi_backend.did)
- Add `get_trade_history` query endpoint
- Add `get_trade_history_paginated` query endpoint with pagination support
## Testing
✅ Backend deployed successfully to mainnet
✅ `get_trade_history()` returns empty array (no trades yet)
✅ `get_trade_history_paginated(0, 10)` returns (vec {}, 0) correctly
✅ All endpoints callable and properly typed
## Implementation Notes
- Trade history stored in stable storage survives canister upgrades
- Recent history (last 10) cached in thread-local for fast status queries
- Full history unlimited size (to be managed with pruning in future enhancement)
- Pagination support enables efficient UI rendering of large histories

Code Review: Trade History with Stable StorageI've reviewed PR 21 and have the following feedback on the implementation of persistent trade history. Overall, the implementation is solid with good architectural decisions, but there are several important issues to address. Critical Issues1. Memory Growth Without BoundsLocation: src/icpi_backend/src/1_CRITICAL_OPERATIONS/rebalancing/mod.rs:538-540 The FULL_HISTORY vector grows unbounded - every rebalance adds a record permanently. Over months/years of hourly rebalances, this will consume increasing stable storage (24 trades/day = ~8,760/year), slow down serialization in pre_upgrade, and eventually hit canister memory limits. Recommendation: Implement a retention policy with MAX_FULL_HISTORY constant (e.g., 10,000 records = ~416 days) and use drain() to remove old records when limit is reached. 2. Duplicate Clone in pre_upgradeLocation: src/icpi_backend/src/lib.rs:317-319 The .clone() on line 319 is unnecessary - trade_history is already cloned inside export_history_for_stable() (line 264). This creates multiple copies of potentially thousands of records during upgrade. Fix: Remove the .clone() and capture history_count before moving trade_history 3. Same Issue in post_upgradeLocation: src/icpi_backend/src/lib.rs:332 Another unnecessary clone - load_history_from_stable already stores the vector in a RefCell. The function should take ownership instead of cloning. Performance Concerns4. Inefficient LoggingLocation: src/icpi_backend/src/1_CRITICAL_OPERATIONS/rebalancing/mod.rs:259 The logging requires another borrow after data is loaded. Better to capture the count before loading. 5. Pagination Could Be More EfficientLocation: src/icpi_backend/src/lib.rs:114-126 Current implementation clones entire history then slices for pagination. For large histories, this is wasteful. Consider implementing pagination directly in the rebalancing module. Strengths

Implements all critical and performance fixes from PR #21 review. ## Critical Fixes **1. Bounded Growth Prevention (Memory Exhaustion)** - Add MAX_FULL_HISTORY constant (10,000 records = ~416 days) - Implement history pruning in record_rebalance() - Use drain() to efficiently remove old records - Prevents unbounded memory growth over time **2. Remove Unnecessary Clones in Upgrade Hooks** - pre_upgrade: Capture trade_count before moving trade_history - post_upgrade: Capture trade_count before moving trade_history - load_history_from_stable: Now takes ownership (no clone) - Eliminates duplicate copies of potentially thousands of records ## Performance Improvements **3. Optimize Pagination** - Move pagination logic to rebalancing module - get_trade_history_paginated() now directly accesses FULL_HISTORY - Avoids cloning entire history for every pagination call - Only clones the requested page slice **4. Efficient Logging** - Capture counts before data moves in upgrade hooks - Eliminate redundant borrows in load_history_from_stable() ## Updated Documentation - Update TRADE_HISTORY_UI_PLAN.md to mark backend complete - Add note that Phase 1 sections are reference-only - Guide frontend agent to start at Phase 2 ## Testing ✅ Deployed to mainnet (ev6xm-haaaa-aaaap-qqcza-cai) ✅ Endpoints verified working ✅ Pagination returns (vec {}, 0) correctly ## Breaking Changes None. All changes are backward compatible. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
