Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a successful multi-phase research project I just completed using the GPD framework.
We used GPD to perform a full engineering validation of the ESS Enterprise (ESS-0001), an Abundance-class fusion liner designed for a 30-day Earth-to-Mars transit. The system relies on a high-energy density pulsed fusion core that traditionally faces significant stability and thermal hurdles.
The Workflow
We broke the research into three critical phases to ensure the ship didn't just work on paper, but adhered to strict MHD and thermodynamic constraints.
Phase 1: MHD Stability Derived the Magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor (MRT) instability limits for a 5m liquid PbLi vortex. GPD confirmed that a 42-Tesla magnetic lattice provides enough Alfvénic tension to allow a stable rotation of just 2.2 RPM, reducing mechanical stress by five orders of magnitude.
Phase 2: Thermal Management Analyzed the conversion of a 1.21 GW thermal pulse into electrical power. GPD verified a steady-state operation regime where the liquid wall acts as a thermal flywheel, producing 345 MW of electric power and requiring a 0.12 km² radiator array.
Phase 3: Trajectory Dynamics Applied the Tsiolkovsky equation for a high-$I_{sp}$ mission. Results showed an Exhaust Velocity of 490.5 km/s ($I_{sp}=50,000s$ ), enabling a 1.10 mass ratio. This allows the ESS-0001 to carry 250 tonnes of payload with only 25.3 tonnes of propellant.
Key Takeaways
The framework was instrumental in proving that "Fusion in 30 years" can be "Mars in 30 days" by leveraging magnetic suppression of fluid instabilities.
A huge thank you to the devs for the quick merge on the Windows pathing fix! It allowed us to get the physicist back on the bridge just in time to finalize these results.
