positron-python PyPI package?

Hi,

I've recently had some success adding Neovim support for Ark's plot and variables comms. Since Positron exposes the same comms for Python, I'd be very interested in a standalone version of positron-python which could be used by other frontends (such as Neovim via jet.nvim) to enhance ipykernel.

If there are no plans for this I'd be interested in extracting the relevant code into a standalone project myself. If this is the best option I'd be very grateful if anyone from Posit could provide any more advice regarding Posit's intent for 3rd party embedding of Positron code.

Hey @wurli, cool project! Distributing our Python kernel has been on the radar for a while (#6511) but I think you're the first potential user of the package that's reached out to us 😄

We weren't intending on working on that anytime soon, but I'm going to add a comment noting your request and we will take another look at its prioritization.

Thanks for this! Glad to see this is on the radar 👍 I'll hold off on my own fork for now to see if there's any movement in that case – if I do end up doing something I'll note it against the linked issue.

Thank you for sharing your use case! I do think we as Posit are interested in being the ones who take on the responsbility for that kind of re-distribution of this code. We already do this for ark as a Jupyter kernel, and we'll chat about how/when to do this, now that we have a real person who is interested. 😅

One of the things we'll need to hash out is the license under which to release it.
