Proposal: A new Positron logo concept inspired by R and orbital rings

Hi Positron team and community,

First of all, thank you for building Positron. As an R user and open-source enthusiast, I really love the project and wanted to contribute a visual design idea.

I designed a new logo concept for Positron, inspired by the original R logo ecosystem and the idea of an orbital ring / positron-like motion.

Concept

The logo is built around three main visual ideas:

• The “P” letterform
  The central “P” represents Positron directly. Its slightly forward-leaning structure gives the mark a sense of motion, energy, and technical momentum, which feels appropriate for a modern IDE.
• The orbital ring
  The silver elliptical ring wraps around the “P”, similar to a Saturn-like orbit. This references the physical meaning of “positron” and suggests movement, computation, and interaction. It also subtly echoes the orbital visual language familiar in the R ecosystem, while remaining an original design.
• Depth and motion
  The ring passes visually in front of and behind the “P”, creating a layered effect. The inner thin arc adds a sense of trajectory and reinforces the idea of an orbit around the central mark.

Variants

I created two main variants:

1. Light background version
   A blue “P” on a white background with a silver orbital ring.
   This version is suitable for documentation, websites, GitHub previews, and light UI contexts.
2. Blue background version
   A reversed white “P” on a blue background with the same silver orbital ring.
   This version works better as an app icon, splash-screen element, or dark/colored UI asset.

Visual direction

The blue-and-silver palette is intended to feel clean, technical, and connected to data science tooling. The mark is designed to be recognizable as a standalone icon while still carrying references to Positron, R, and scientific computation.

Contributing

This is my original design concept. If the Positron team is interested in this direction, I can prepare cleaned-up SVG files, PNG exports, light/dark variants, and icon-size previews.
I am also willing to follow the project’s contribution process and sign the required CLA if this design is considered for inclusion.
I understand that official branding decisions are sensitive, so I would love to hear whether this type of community-submitted logo proposal is welcome.

The situation is that Posit has acquired the trademark for Positron, including the current logos you see in the product and on the website. Changing that is not something that is doable on the legal or IP side. I will say on a personal level that I am a fan of your design here; congrats on the nice work!
