Hello community! 👋
We are currently in the process of implementing some changes to the organisation of our repositories.
Over the past seven years, our GitHub has grown significantly as our research, impact and collaborations have expanded. Our GitHub repositories grew organically alongside this work, and we now feel we’re at a point where we have capacity to review and reorganise our accessible repos.
We want to make sure that opportunities to contribute are clear, well signposted and as accessible as possible to all levels of contributors. As well as this, some of our current open repositories are not ‘open-source friendly’, in that they would be difficult to understand without internal knowledge and also don’t necessarily help to amplify impact.
To that end, we have decided to create a new system of categorisation for our repos. For transparency, we are sharing the new categorisation system below 👇
Category A
Open access repositories. All are welcome to contribute to these repositories, and there will be a variety of issues to ensure access to beginner contributors.
Category B
Gated PR repos. These require a well written issue describing the feature being added, the problem being solved and the improvement being made before actions are approved. We welcome contributions from more experienced contributors, researchers or students.
Category C
Close off some repos for PRs. These repositories require specialist knowledge and skills and aren’t optimised well for open-source contributors.
We are always happy to discuss providing access to researchers or students who get in touch.
Category D
Smaller, niche repositories that will not directly amplify our impact and will be closed off.
As mentioned above, we are currently in the process of implementing this structure. Once complete, we will share more information as well as an FAQ for our contributors.
Do you have any questions? Pop them below and we will be sure to share an answer.
Thank you so much. We are really excited about this new structure and hope it will make our GitHub easier to traverse for community members!
