Automatic "smart quotes" possible?

Is there an extension / plugin / setting / whatever for MarkText that allows for "smart" inputting of curly quotes? I.e., you type " and you get “”, or type ' and get ‘’? Or even the super-smart "word-processor" fashion, that recognizes that a " after a space gives “, etc.

I can, of course, input these directly (I'm on a Linux system, so AltGr + b or n, shifted or not), but it would be quite convenient for the kind of typing I do to have a more word-processor like automatic input.

Any help appreciated!

I see now this was raised as a feature request as issue #3266 — that was logged on 19 May 2022, over four years ago. :/

Given this hasn't been implements since first being registered as a feature request in 2022, I looked for a work-around and found Espanso. This plays nicely with MarkText, is cross-platform, and allows for more convenient “smart quote” input than the others I know of.
