Report network changes to the Go client instead of restarting the engine - #255
A Wi-Fi/cellular switch makes NetBird on iOS unreachable for a long time while the app shows "Connected". Measured on an iPhone XR (iOS 18.7) against NetBird Cloud with the current core pin: 61–91 s after Wi-Fi off, 18–23 s after Wi-Fi on, 35–39 s after a switch between two Wi-Fi networks, and 2.5 minutes of almost no connectivity during the fast Wi-Fi toggles from #196.
Root cause
The extension never tells the Go client about network changes. SetNetworkAvailable and NotifyNetworkChange are in the pinned core, but iOS does not call them, so after a switch the client keeps using management, signal and relay connections bound to the old path until keepalives time out.
Instead, handleNetworkChange restarts the whole engine, and only when the interface type changes or after a confirmed outage. A restart costs a 5 s stop, a new login, new relay and signal connections, and on the remote side the relay server keeps the old connection for 54–84 s. Fast toggles queue restart after restart (12 restarts in one iOS client: repeated disconnects and re-auth prompts, especially when switching networks #196 run).
A switch between two Wi-Fi networks keeps en0 and the type. It shows only as an unsatisfied blip of 0.4–0.9 s, under the 2 s loss debounce, so it gets no reaction at all.
Changes
NetBirdAdapter: thin wrappers setNetworkAvailable(_:) and notifyNetworkChange().
NetworkPathReconciler (pure, unit-tested) maps path updates to Go network events:
notify on a new primary interface (type or name), and on every return from an unsatisfied path, also a blip under the debounce (the Wi-Fi A ↔ B case);
interfaces other than the primary one coming and going (cellular listed while on Wi-Fi, our own utun) are not a change;
a loss that lasts the existing 2 s debounce reports setNetworkAvailable(false); on recovery it notifies before setNetworkAvailable(true), so the sweep does not also cut the first redials on the new network.
handleNetworkChange no longer restarts the engine. The Go client redials on the new path while the engine and the tunnel stay up. The UI loss flags and the debounce are unchanged.
One restart rule stays: a restart that is still owed (it stopped the engine and found no usable path, or a scheduled one was interrupted by a loss) runs on the next satisfied path, whatever the interface type. Before, such a restart could be left pending with the engine stopped.
startTunnel resets the reconciler and calls setNetworkAvailable(true), since a reused adapter keeps its Go client, which may still think the device is offline.
The path log now prints interface names and gateways.
The MDM policy restart still uses restartClient; it is now the only caller on iOS.
Verification
Unit tests: 70 pass on the simulator, 12 of them new in NetworkPathReconcilerTests.
Device: iPhone XR, iOS 18.7, NetBird Cloud, core pin cb7ca8ef3, Debug build with extra file logging. Outage = longest ping gap from the remote peer to the iPhone, no traffic from the iPhone. Lazy connections on.
P2P peer (macOS on the same LAN): A ↔ B, Wi-Fi off/on
not measured
6.5–14.1 s, 0 restarts, P2P restored each time
On every switch the log shows network change: connections marked stale, then network change sweep: closed 3 stale connections 0.5 s later, and relay and signal back in about 1 s. No restartClient: starting restart sequence on any switch.
MDM restart path, checked with a local test-only trigger that calls requestMDMRestart(): on a stable network one restart and the policy notification; with the network down during the stop, path unavailable after stop - waiting for recovery, then Path satisfied - running the pending restart when Wi-Fi returned; during a switch, one restart and no follow-up restart.
Not tested: tvOS, a real MDM server, a dual-SIM device.

Bug Fixes
Improved VPN behavior when network connections change, including switching interfaces and recovering from brief or sustained connection loss.
Prevented unnecessary tunnel restarts during network recovery, helping maintain a stable connection.
Notify on a new primary interface or on any return from an unsatisfied path:
a Wi-Fi A to B switch shows only as a short blip. Secondary interfaces and
our own utun are ignored.
A restart on every Wi-Fi/cellular switch made the outage longer (#196), and
same-type switches got no reaction at all (#167). Go now redials on the new
path while the engine stays up. A pending restart still runs on the next
satisfied path.

Network path updates now pass through a reconciler. The tunnel provider forwards network-change and availability events to the SDK client instead of restarting the engine for interface changes. Sustained loss remains debounced, and tests cover reconciliation behavior.
Changes: Network path handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Reconciler and SDK event interface NetbirdNetworkExtension/NetBirdAdapter.swift, NetbirdNetworkExtension/PacketTunnelProvider.swift, NetBirdTests/NetworkPathReconcilerTests.swift, NetBird.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj
NetworkPathReconciler identifies relevant interface changes, recovery, and confirmed loss. NetBirdAdapter forwards network events to the SDK client. Tests cover these cases and are registered in the test target.
The provider resets the reconciler at tunnel start and stop. It debounces sustained loss, sends reconciler events to the adapter, and retains pending restarts until a satisfied path returns.
A route change on the same interface may leave traffic stuck without notifying the client. Resolve or explicitly accept this gap before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 851a3
The normal recovery path avoids unnecessary engine restarts, but a restart that fails while the network is unavailable can lose its recovery obligation. This can leave the tunnel without a running engine after connectivity returns. No authentication bypass or expanded remote access was established.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: A restart can lose its recovery obligation if connectivity disappears after the stop phase permits startup and startup subsequently fails. The unsatisfied-path handler now retains only scheduled restart work, not an active restart. The failure callback cancels the watchdog, completes the transaction, and declines to queue a retry while offline. On recovery, SDK notifications are delivered, but the Swift lifecycle neither restarts the failed engine nor tears the tunnel down unless restartPending was independently set. This removes the base behavior that retained an active restart across loss and can strand the device's tunnel outside bounded recovery.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated scope is the current device's tunnel client and its management, signal, and relay connectivity. A party able to disrupt that device's underlying network could influence recovery timing, but the inspected change establishes no credential gain, tenant crossing, or authority to choose new service destinations.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider guarding SDK event delivery with the synchronous teardown latch, or documenting and validating that SDK events during stop are inert. The queue-local stopping flag is set asynchronously, so already-queued path work can reach the new wrappers after stop begins. Unsafe SDK behavior was not demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The directly linked issues [#196] and [#167] require resolving iOS connection failures after network changes. PacketTunnelProvider now resets the path reconciler and marks the client available at tunnel start. Network path changes now produce Go-client availability and change notifications instead of engine restarts. Sustained loss and recovery preserve the existing debounce behavior. NetworkPathReconcilerTests cover interface changes, Wi-Fi blips, sustained loss, recovery ordering, and reset behavior. The issues define no additional formal coding acceptance criteria.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed changes stay within [#196] and [#167]. Adapter wrappers provide the required Go-client notifications. The reconciler, pending-restart handling, path logging, test-target registration, and unit tests support reliable network-change recovery. The MDM restart path remains separate and preserves policy-restart behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
