major distributions still have 1.26

Hi

At https://pkgs.org/download/caja we can see many major distributions still have 1.26, only few have 1.28 😞

Is there a PPA or other APT source to get a newer .deb version ?

I myself play no role in what distros do. Debian has not picked up caja 1.28 though I think they updated the mate-desktop (libmate-desktop) package. I suspect that distro maintainers may feel we've lost too many team members so are going with an older known quantity. Nothing whatsoever I can do about that

There are several ways to achieve this:

Doing any of these will leave you effectively unsupported since the packages are made by your own hand
so, your distribution could step out of third-party package discussions.

Also, your desktop could stop working due to library requirements. These are suggestions, not an "encouragement" list, take 'em with a block of salt

1. You could read the .travis-ci instructions to build the .deb packages manually on a separate GitHub repository using action pipelines.
2. You could try to create your own repository using the OpenSUSE Build Service if your distribution is supported there.
3. You can change your main distribution to one that provides you with latest MATE builds
4. You could try step number 1 using guix or nix to generate your .deb/.rpm packages in a reproducible manner.
5. If feeling brave, you can always ./configure && make && make install your way into latest MATE.

These are suggestions only, the distributions you mention are the .deb based ones I see other mainstream distributions shipping the 1.28.X series just fine 😅
