Feature request: reduced minimum brightness #1986

Description

@tew42

Is there an existing issue for this?

  • I have searched the existing issues

Proposed feature request

(this is for PT2) Minimum brightness in Dim mode is 10%. In pitch dark rooms, I find that this is still much too bright. Is there a reason for not allowing values lower than 10%? If not, I'd request an Extra Dim mode.

Alternatives

  • We have an RGB backlight, so I can achieve the desired effect of a 5% minimum backlight by generally decreasing color-brightness (e.g. 808080 instead of FFFFFF); I can then conserve same maximum brightness by adjusting that settting (e.g. from Bright to Blinding). However, since intermediate brightness levels/transitions are optimized for RGB values closer to FFFFFF than 808080, it seems to me that intermediate lighting conditions suffer.
  • Partial mitigation of the above concern would be possible with Day/night backlight color #1596 (interesting also independent of this, but sadly stalled) by configuring a low-RGB backlight only at nighttime (when pitch black conditions are most likely)
