If a user misspells their email address during checkout, there is currently no way to correct it afterward.
Updating the $email attribute only changes the customer attribute displayed in the dashboard, but it does not update the underlying email address used for email communications.
As a result, all emails continue to be sent to the originally entered (incorrect) email address and the user is unable to access the customer portal or anything.
