From 8fcf8eb1bd9cc90a2155c4eeeb9e698607cbd9cc Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Thomas Watson Date: Thu, 3 Sep 2026 16:22:53 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 01/12] feat(debugger): report guardrail telemetry metrics Add the three Dynamic Instrumentation guardrail metrics required by the "Debugger Observability for GA" specification, in the `live_debugger` telemetry namespace shared with the other tracers: - `events.skipped{reason,event_type}` for probe hits stopped before an event was created (`rateLimitProbe`, `rateLimitGlobal`) - `events.dropped{reason,event_type}` for complete events discarded before transport (reason codes only; the drop paths land separately) - `capture.incomplete{reason,event_type}` for captures where a limit was enforced (`runtimeError`, `timeout`, `depth`, `fieldCount`, `collectionSize`, `stringLength`, `payloadTooLarge`, `other`), counted once per event per reason Rate limits are decided by the probe sampler inside the V8 breakpoint condition on the main thread, while capture limits are enforced in the debugger worker. To keep both hot paths cheap, counters live in a SharedArrayBuffer incremented with atomics, and the main thread drains them into telemetry metrics every 10 seconds and when the debugger is stopped. Also report `dynamic_instrumentation.enabled` in the telemetry products payload, as required by the same specification. --- benchmark/sirun/debugger/benchmark-worker.js | 6 +- .../debugger/guardrail-metrics.spec.js | 103 ++++++++++ .../devtools_client/guardrail-metrics.js | 15 ++ .../src/debugger/devtools_client/index.js | 33 +++- .../src/debugger/devtools_client/send.js | 18 +- .../devtools_client/snapshot/index.js | 24 ++- .../devtools_client/snapshot/processor.js | 178 +++++++++++------- .../src/debugger/guardrail-metrics.js | 165 ++++++++++++++++ packages/dd-trace/src/debugger/index.js | 37 +++- .../dd-trace/src/debugger/probe_sampler.js | 13 +- packages/dd-trace/src/telemetry/telemetry.js | 3 + .../debugger/devtools_client/index.spec.js | 153 ++++++++++++++- .../debugger/devtools_client/send.spec.js | 123 +++++++++--- .../snapshot/complex-types.spec.js | 15 +- .../snapshot/incomplete-capture.spec.js | 124 ++++++++++++ .../snapshot/max-collection-size.spec.js | 9 +- .../snapshot/max-field-count.spec.js | 9 +- .../snapshot/max-reference-depth.spec.js | 7 +- .../target-code/incomplete-capture.js | 9 + .../snapshot/time-budget.spec.js | 21 ++- .../devtools_client/snapshot/utils.js | 5 +- .../test/debugger/guardrail-metrics.spec.js | 121 ++++++++++++ packages/dd-trace/test/debugger/index.spec.js | 86 +++++++++ .../test/debugger/probe_sampler.spec.js | 48 ++++- .../dd-trace/test/telemetry/index.spec.js | 13 ++ 25 files changed, 1201 insertions(+), 137 deletions(-) create mode 100644 integration-tests/debugger/guardrail-metrics.spec.js create mode 100644 packages/dd-trace/src/debugger/devtools_client/guardrail-metrics.js create mode 100644 packages/dd-trace/src/debugger/guardrail-metrics.js create mode 100644 packages/dd-trace/test/debugger/devtools_client/snapshot/incomplete-capture.spec.js create mode 100644 packages/dd-trace/test/debugger/devtools_client/snapshot/target-code/incomplete-capture.js create mode 100644 packages/dd-trace/test/debugger/guardrail-metrics.spec.js diff --git a/benchmark/sirun/debugger/benchmark-worker.js b/benchmark/sirun/debugger/benchmark-worker.js index be7fa20f548..f35de82b1bc 100644 --- a/benchmark/sirun/debugger/benchmark-worker.js +++ b/benchmark/sirun/debugger/benchmark-worker.js @@ -92,15 +92,17 @@ function markProbeHandled () { * @param {Record | undefined} dd * @param {DebuggerSnapshot} snapshot * @param {string | undefined} processTags + * @param {number} eventType + * @param {number} incompleteReasons * @returns {void} */ -function sendAndCount (message, logger, dd, snapshot, processTags) { +function sendAndCount (message, logger, dd, snapshot, processTags, eventType, incompleteReasons) { const captureKind = getCaptureKind(snapshot) if (preflightPending) { preflightPending = false Atomics.store(probeCounts, CAPTURE_KIND_INDEX, captureKind) } else { - 08:55:53 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 02/12] fix(debugger): flush guardrail counters when the application exits The flush interval timer is unref'ed and the debugger worker does not keep the process alive, so when an application exits on its own everything counted since the last 10 second tick was lost: `stop()` is never called in that case, and telemetry sends its final metrics from its `beforeExit` handler before the timer fires again. For a short-lived process that could be every counter. Telemetry publishes the `datadog:telemetry:app-closing` channel right before that final send, precisely so listeners can update their metrics first. The collector however also raises a fatal error on purpose when an object exceeds the large object safety threshold, to disable future captures for the probe. Nothing threw in that case; the object was trimmed to the field count limit, which the processor already reports. The event was counted as both `fieldCount` and a bogus `runtimeError`. Record the runtime error reason where the errors originate instead: when a scope cannot be read, when a capture expression throws and when it cannot be evaluated at all. The safety threshold keeps disabling the capture but is reported as the limit it is. --- .../src/debugger/devtools_client/index.js | 7 ++- .../devtools_client/snapshot/index.js | 10 +++- .../debugger/devtools_client/index.spec.js | 47 +++++++++++++++++++ .../snapshot/error-handling.spec.js | 8 +++- .../snapshot/incomplete-capture.spec.js | 41 ++++++++++++++-- .../target-code/incomplete-capture.js | 8 +++- 6 files changed, 110 insertions(+), 11 deletions(-) diff --git a/packages/dd-trace/src/debugger/devtools_client/index.js b/packages/dd-trace/src/debugger/devtools_client/index.js index e66874b1e16..076720c93ce 100644 --- a/packages/dd-trace/src/debugger/devtools_client/index.js +++ b/packages/dd-trace/src/debugger/devtools_client/index.js @@ -204,7 +204,9 @@ session.on('Debugger.paused', async ({ params }) => { language: 'javascript', } - // Which guardrail bucket the event belongs to, and which capture limits were enforced while producing it + // Which guardrail bucket the event belongs to, and which capture limits were enforced while producing it.
